Beginner Golfer Advice

I picked up a beginner golf club set off the site last week thanks to a decent deal.

Never swung a club in my life so looking for words of wisdom on the best way to get started e.g watch a bunch of YouTube videos then go for a hit at the driving range and then get a few lessons or just get lessons straight from the word go so as not to develop any poor form/habits early?

Get a few lessons from the start. The grip is very important and if you get that wrong it's hard to change further down the track.

Definitely lessons. You're much better off starting with decent platform of grip, stance, posture etc. If you just go and do whatever is comfortable, it can be hard to change bad habits later.

Agree with lessons. Or if you go the youtube route film yourself so that you can see what you are doing and compare

It is Important to get a proper grip and swing from the start

Always wear two pairs of pants, in case you get a hole in one.

Wish you'd asked before purchasing beginner clubs, they're horrible and you'll be busting to upgrade after one lesson… which is a thing with golf, new better stuff calling out to you

    • Sales rep actually disclosed this: Package sets are great for beginners/recreational players, I'd personally recommend looking at upgrading if you're thinking of playing more regularly and focusing on getting better.

      • I’ll play once a month if that

Good luck with your golf journey. One cheap way to upgrade is to progressively swap out what become your favourite clubs.

Before taking lessons you need to select & perfect your golfing attire.

  • Local golf club or driving range we’ll do beginner group lessons. Start there

Always wanted to try golf but never really gave it a shot till a few months ago with wife. They really make it look easy on tv. It was good fun and games, and we had a fair bit of laughs, but definitely not something I would go out of my way to play again. Too slow paced of a sport for my liking. I'd say go to your local club and just play around to see if it's your thing before spending any more money. Pay for the smallest round they allow, as we went with 9-hole and didn't have the patience to finish even that.

    • Maybe mini golf is more your speed?

Definitely lessons first, then after each less hit some balls at the range. Also when you get home, pull out a club and practice the grip, stance and swing in the yard (not hitting a ball) so the swing movements start to feel natural.

You need some buddies willing to golf with you, willing to sit at a driving range for a few hours drinking with you and hitting balls. I bet without other people or something at stake golf would get boring fast.

    Golf? Just dont.

  • Agree on the consensus of lessons, if you can find beginners clinics that will be cheaper than lessons and if you get along with others in the group alright, it might get some golfing buddies.
Regardless, be in group or solo lessons, definitely do it to start. When i returned to golf a couple of years ago i didnt, thinking i wasnt good enough yet to have lessons being completely fresh. Tried to just go with youtube. Ended up just needing to undo the bad habits i already developed.

  • Channel your rage

  • Step 1, hit the ball.
Step 2, get better at hitting the ball.

lessons are the way to go to start golf however 1 on 1 coaching is pretty expensive at $120/hour and up.

I'd recommend group classes first, some golf clubs offer it and there are facilities like Golf Athletics in Mitcham that offers class packages.

I went for a short game course 1 lesson x 6 weeks at $240 that included putting and chipping. Then I go to courses with free putting greens to practice putting in between lessons.
