By looking at the back of an iPhone box how can you tell if it’s an Au model or grey import what do I look for that will tell me which?

No sure what you mean
Based on your response, i don't think you have the capacity to figure this out.
I had already typed in serial number on Apple site nothing came up I just need to know what I look for that tells you what it is
@bwatt72: Bwatt72 suggests this and you do that.
No sure what you mean
'Google' is a popular search engine.
It scans the internet to find web pages that are relevant to the words you have typed into a box on the screen.
im sure you are looking to buy "a very cheap bargain of the year" iphone from facebook market, too good to be true! so excited!
yeah dont do it.So many scam listings on Marketplace for any Apple products. You can probably spot legit sellers though, the scammers are shameless.
Both phones say my and heap of other letter and numbers further along says a3290?
https://support.apple.com/en-us/108044
iPhone 16 Plus: A3082 (United States, Puerto Rico), A3289, (Bahrain, Canada, Iraq, Guam, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, U.S. Virgin Islands), A3291 (China mainland, Hong Kong, Macao), A3290 (other countries and regions)So a3290 means it’s au model and not grey import correct as all I need to know as got to be careful these days.
It means it was specified for all of the countries not covered by the other three models. If you've already purchased call Apple to check warranty coverage.
I don’t think you can definitely tell, since AU doesn’t have a specific model. Contact Apple with the serial number, maybe they can tell you which country it was sold in.
There are actually two different model numbers for iPhones (and iPads and possibly other Apple devices):
- The model number starting with A and containing four digits (which other people have pointed out).
- The model number ending in /A.
The second model number actually contains a region identifier for the region the iPhone was originally intended to be sold in. If we use this eBay listing as an example, you can see on the back of the box the following:
MY1X3X/A iPhone 16 Plus, White, 512GB
Assembled in China Other items as marked thereon Model A3290The model number you would be interested in is MY1X3X/A, not A3290.
The first five alpha-numeric characters (MY1X3) describe the type of device this is (i.e. this is an iPhone 16 Plus in white with 512GB of capacity).
Any characters between the first five alpha-numeric characters and the / are the region identifier. In this case, it is X.
The /A appears to be a generic suffix added to all models.
If you look here or here, a region identifier of X means this is a device for the Australian or New Zealand market. The only way you can tell whether this device was actually originally sold in Australia or New Zealand is to ask Apple. (The staff at the Apple Genius Bar should be able to see where and when this device was originally sold.)
I should also note that this method of identifying regions only works for model numbers starting with M (which should only be used for new devices). For example, the iPad I am using to type this comment is a replacement device obtained from a physical Apple Store in Australia, and it has a number number start with N and ending with B/A. A region identifier starting with B suggests this device was originally made for Great Britain or Ireland, but I definitely picked this iPad up from an Australian Apple Store.
Ok make sense so this MY1X3 description is what model and type etc it’s nothing to do with country.
A similar model also similar says different forth letter being different so probably goes as different colour correct. And the x before the before the toward slash/ means it’s Australian thats really all I needed to know having purchased two phones I just wanted to be sure they was au stock and not grey import as i believe the warranty is only one year if grey to if Australian model.
Seller did say au stock but one person review said otherwise but most said it was au stock.

For example, an iPhone 16 Plus 512GB in Black would use MY1P3. (Here is an example.)
And the x before the before the toward slash/ means it’s Australian
It means it is either Australian or New Zealand stock. The model number cannot distinguish between an iPhone originally intended for the Australian market and an iPhone originally intended for the New Zealand market.

If the device was originally sold in Australia and is an Australian model and you take it directly to Apple in Australia for servicing, it will be covered by both the one year Apple warranty and any consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law.
If the device was not originally sold in Australia (i.e. it was originally sold in France, New Zealand, Singapore, etc) and you take it directly to Apple in Australia for servicing, it will only be covered by the one year Apple warranty. Any consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law will not apply in this case.

I guess AU stock can have two different interpretations:
The item was physically located in Australia and it is shipped to you from an Australian address.
The item was originally sold in Australia and has an Australian model number.
Well going by your info and what I believe I have then yes to both below.
The item was physically located in Australia and it is shipped to you from an Australian address.
The item was originally sold in Australia and has an Australian model number.
I did ask prior to buying both if was grey import or au stock
And seller replied prior to purchase. I just wanted to be sure as both are Xmas gifts and not be set up used until then.
Hi, its australian model not grey imports
fine print above the bar codes.
"Model Axxxx" and google that.
