10% GST and Custom Charges, Temu, Amiami, Hobby Link and Hobby Search

Are custom charges same as charges over $1000 or it's different thing? For example if I want to order something from temu or Amiami and hobby search for Japanese figurines, I know these companies now charge GST, does this cover even if I order items over $1000 or I still get slapped with some extra fees?

I will be using DHL as shipment method, would it be cheaper to just DHL and ship parcels together or seperate for it to be cheaper than all these government charges, sorry trying to find cheapest way.

  • I think you'll find big companies like Temu will automatically apply GST when you order something. It's easy for the government to oblige them to comply. It's small hobby shops that randomly decide to allow shipping to Australia that won't even know about GST and won't apply it. Government isn't going to harass them to comply when they only send like $1000 worth of stuff to Australia each year, not even on their radar.

When it's over A$1000 the overseas stores aren't supposed to collect the tax and the carrier or customs should send you the bill. I.e. DHL will often send you an invoice. The total slapped ontop is often 13~15% while on some occasions people may end up with something crazy like 20% ontop depending on the processing fee.

Of course sometimes they slip through and you don't pay anything. I've had that happen many times with AliExpress and Auspost.

ok that explains a lot of the extra fees I get added on when buying direct from Amazon JP.
supposed to be only charged for the item with highest shipping cost, which was 1969yen. but at checkout I pay 2610yen (approx).

I always thought most of it (on top of GST) was card process fee.

  • If I use ems will that be better option? My order total is $2000 plus $400 shipping, there to much GST and tax involved with these if shipping is included, so seperating shipment be cheaper?

    • $2000 + $400 delivery + (10%) $240 = $2640 on collectible merch type products??

are you sure you want to spend all that?! I mean I have no idea how rich you are at the moment but maybe think about it you need all of it.

I have ordered japan only merch type products from amiami before but not over $100 and I just chose cheapest shipping method and probably charged 10% but it wasn’t that much extra.

maybe if your order is so huge and $$$$, they are worried about damage in transit so they want you to use a more expensive method (like DHL?) with insurance. that way if any or most of it gets damaged the shipping company pays for it and you have a chance of getting your money back.

idk as I said $2640 is a lot for any order I have ever heard not just for merch.

regarding $400 delivery think about how much DHL is charging to insure a $2500+ order.

      • Yeah imma curious what this merch is now. I bet it's Japanese robot figurines?

        • some of it is japan exclusive stuff but a lot of it is available from other places. but international shops like amiami usually have lower prices overall even incl shipping.

I found for some more mainstream items though they are now available to purchase from amazon jp direct for less sometimes.

Some reason they spit my orders, if I request it to be all shipped separately or each under $1000 will that save me heaps or will it cost even more than GST and tax?

  • Spoke to Amiami , told that get and tax already added but customers might charge me, assuming it's the $1000 and over, had them all shipped out under $900 X 3 should be able to pass custom charges I hope
