[Back Order] LEGO Technic Mclaren P1 42172 $594 Delivered @ Toys R Us

100

ToysRus has a 15% off Lego sale that includes the newly released 2024 supercar—the McLaren P1. I doubt this will be the cheapest it will ever be, but I am trying to get organised for Christmas, and 15% off the RRP of $699 isn't too bad for a new set that was only released a few months ago. It qualifies for free shipping.
The description says it's back ordered and will ship when available.

  • Decent discount.

If you can wait it out, and if it follows the others we may see in the low 500s or an extra set added to a bundle.

Past outcomes are not a predictor of future ones

    Hodl for $500

    • +1

Yep,this is not an insta buy for me, more of a, "I want it to complete the Technic super car collection and not have to pay a fortune when it is retired." Happy to wait for a better deal.

      • $550 will come soon enough

      • It really is just the Porsche that got pricey when retired, and it seems to have stabilised not that far above what they want for the new sets.

To be honest I'm considering having just the Porsche and Sian, maaaybe the Ferrari. I have no love for Maclaren or Bugatti really, so my interest in keeping this spending spree going is waning

They need to refocus to a very tight collection of cars and declare where it's going to stop. Or I'm out. I'm not collecting all of them at this price unless there's only 1 or 2 left before the series ends

    • SP3 still after two years hasn't been below 545 ish.

Do you think this one has a better chance of $500?

  • So McLaren reveals the W1 and now Lego does the P1…?

    • +2

P1 is more iconic anyway. Even better if they did a big F1

      • +1

I recall one of the tiny Champions sets including an F1 GTR bundled with something else

      • How good would an F1 be… I would throw money at that in a heartbeat.

Expect 300s like the Lego Technic Bugatti Chiron one day

    • +1

Other than the Chiron that pricing did not happen for the others.

What is the real problem though is these are sets aren't so bad when they were $500, but at $700 it's not worth collecting them all, only the one you really want

      • The orange Porsche you could get for around 300

fakes of these come up on aliexpress for $75 on good day, $110 on a regular day. For 6-8 times the price you're not intrinsically getting much more.

No clue why you are getting negged. Hard to justify 6-7x spend when you get 95% of experience. Ordered mine a week ago and should land here next week.

Hmm i wonder that's because he's promoting fakes/thievery of design. Every Tom, Dick and Harry knows where to get the fake's of everything. This is clearly not the place to post it. Without the original makers, China wouldn't be able to steal anything.

        • No worries, keep buying grossly overpriced products, that's gonna drive the prices down and everything will become more affordable (?)

          • -1

@kior22: The MARKET is what defines the price of these things and as far as I'm concerned LEGO has massive sales all the time through it's life then in the end discontinue the model, such is the nature of the business. Without the original buyers you'd have no knockoff to buy.

Edit: yeah all you can do is neg lol

        • -3

This IS the place to post it. Let people make their choice from there. Lego isn't the only people capable designing a lego technic car. There's a huge variety of MOC cars on rebrickable and some originals on Taobao/aliexpress and some are stolen there too. Cada is the premiere brand of bricks (highest quality) and has its own paid designers or partners and licensing deals with Mercedes AMG, Fiat, Abarth, Kick Sauber F1 and Mazda and probably more. Designs will keep coming as long as there's a demand for it.

          • @Blu2: You must be mistaken but this is not a forum. This is an ozbargain post. A post that means there's a DEAL on the item linked.

            • @TheGman101: This entire site is forums. It's how I'm talking to you right now. I'll also reply to your other comment that the MARKET has created a demand for a cheaper alternative - and this is it.

              • @Blu2: Well if you prefer that market cease to comment negatively on the original market, pretty simple mate stick to your cheap lane.

        • +1

So people who can't afford a $700 kit shouldn't experience the joy of building something like this?
Lmao (looking at those in second and third world countries)

          • @TightAl: You must be completely blind mate but i said before everyone knows where to get knockoffs. Tell me where exactly i stated people shouldn't buy them. Learn to actually read instead of mouthing off.

    • What are the difference to the real ones? At a fraction of the price and if it looks indistinguishable to the real one it's not a bad buy especially since it's just gonna sit there. I'm not some serious collector/seller so….other than supporting fakes, is there any other good reasons not to buy these?

      • +1

Without the real one there would be no fake one. In saying that for the casual builder, buy the fake for the build experience (tolerances and quality may vary across the fakes)

Buy the real one, build it and resell down the track without any real loss (usually built technics supercars can be resold for close to rrp after retirement 1-2 years, keep all boxes manuals for maximum pricing)

      • +2

the differences with the fake ones is that 1. there can be fitment issues, either parts too loose or too tight (not that common though, maybe 5% of pieces or less. Max 2% in my experience). 2 .colour isn't consistent across coloured panels. 3. Sticker prints may be slightly different to Lego (because china still technically enforces some copyright laws. There was a huge legal case where factories were shut down 2 months ago). 4. instructions may be different, possibly some mistakes. 5. Box art is different or it's often sold without the box. In my experience the fake is always worth it if it's 1/3 of the price or less.
You will get hurt on resale, but at that cheap price I wouldn't worry. Just gift it when you don't want it.

  • So i got the bugatti, porsche and the Sian.

haven't kept up to date after, but have they made any after that until this one? Are they getting disconinuted? Guess i better start looking if i want to complete my set..
