I've been on the hunt for a good price on over of these portable monitors for travelling with work since I saw a colleague with one earlier in the year.

His is the 2k with the same resolution, but 120Hz, which was super impressive compared to another brand that I can't recall, and it's about $35 cheaper than on eBay, so I'm assuming the 144Hz will be as good or better.

Hope someone else finds this useful.

damn that is quite expensive for Portable Monitor

Why you need this to plug into a laptop?

Got 2 of the 16 inch ones and they’re a game changer specially when you study and need certain tabs open . I was studying some coding as a hobby and the IDE was open on one screen and the Udemy video on another while the third one had a notepad .

      • why not just get 2 cheap/older tablets?

It can do more than this 2x Portable Monitor which has no use unless it is connected to a laptop etc

        • I mean when I got mine they were like $250 both so I’m not complaining

for an 18 inch monitor, OP's post is actually reasonable.

BUT - if you have ok eyesight, and want to dip your toe into portable monitors for work, go for the 1080p 14 / 15" portables, they're bouncing under a hundred bucks nowadays.
if you really pay attention, you can even get the ones with HDMI inputs for under a hundy also!

Get one that's slightly smaller in dimensions than your laptop and they sit great in laptop carry bags / roller cases, and very easy to fire up at Maccas / wherever when you want to knock out some dual screen spreadsheet action whilst on the road.

I thought I'd hate the low res, as I have dual 4k 27's at home…….BUT, having the ability to have two monitors, even if just 1080p, really steps up portable productivity.
if you're desperate for 4K portable monitors, the usual suspects have them at significantly cheaper than the OP's post for 15-16" ones

  • I’ve tried a few different portable monitors, and the best one I’ve used is the LG Gram +view 16” (2560x1600). It’s even better than some desktop monitors.

Thank you! I was wondering if a more "traditional" brand had these monitors as well. I'll have a look into this one.

I've been using one that I bought about 2y ago for about $100.
I think it's 15", but the quality is considerably worse than my monitor's screen, even on the same resolution.
And because I use external mouse/keyb, the external screen is usually my main one, so I'd like it to be better :)

Edit: just checked it. $600. Ouch 😅
Edit2: I am now down a rabbit hole of expensive portable monitors 🤦‍♂️

It’s a bit pricey, but totally worth it for me. I got it from this Amazon Japan deal last year for $371.

        • Wow, amazing deal! I'll see what happens in the Black Friday period. Thanks =)

  • Can you use samsung dex on these things?

    • yes, better if it is a touch screen version

I've bought one of these recently as a secondary monitor to go next to my Dell G3223Q. I've got in vertically mouted and the height is only a couple of centimeters short of the Dell.

A few things to be aware of:
    1. These are too light for gas lift monitor arms, I wasn't able to tighten the NB F80 to allow height adjustment, it was stuck at max height.
    2. For whatever reason windows (10) wouldn't allow me to select a higher refresh rate in the normal spot. I had to go into the Adapter Settings to select 120Hz.
    3. HDMI only supports up to 120Hz. USB C supports 144Hz.

Overall I'm really happy with it. It's sufficiently bright, bezels are pretty small and there's no silly branding on it either. You can also buy appropriate 180 degree adapters for USB C and HDMI ports to clean up the look, it allows you to tuck the cables behind the monitor.

I recently bought this portable monitor during the last AliExpress sale for about AUD $276 delivered.

My verdict: pretty good, though also quite expensive for what you get. You're definitely paying more for the compact form factor (compared to a full-sized monitor).

    The good:

    • light and still reasonably portable compared to a full-sized monitor
    • decent colour gamut (claimed 100% DCI-P3 and 133% sRGB)
    • reasonably bright (400 cd/m aka 400 nits)
    • the 2560x1600 resolution makes it razor sharp (167 PPI) and ideal for both gaming and productivity use in Windows and macOS
    • the 75mm VESA mount is great if you have a semi-permanent home setup. Mine did not come with the M4x4mm screws though, so you'll likely have to source your own. Also note that this monitor is far too light to work with those gas-lift monitor arms, so you'll be stuck using it at max height as pointed out by ntranced. I personally use the VIVO and Wali monitor arms without height adjustment.

    The bad:

    • crappy little built-in speakers that deliver bad audio quality, but that's basically a given with these ultra thin monitors. They work in a pinch though. I'd suggest using headphones/IEMs or external speakers for any serious use.

    Caveats to watch out for:

    • you can only achieve the 144Hz refresh rate via a direct USB C connection. The mini HDMI connection only offers 120Hz nominal, and potentially boosts up to 130Hz if you manually enable custom resolutions and refresh rates via your graphics card's control panel.

If you aren't using this for gaming, save your money and get a 60Hz or 100Hz portable monitor instead, you'll save around a hundred bucks or so. At such small screen sizes, resolution doesn't matter a huge amount, so either 1440p/1600p or 1080p/1200p is fine. 4K is largely a waste for such small monitors (18" and below).

When it comes to portable monitors, many of them are very similar to each other, and I suspect a lot of them use the same underlying IPS panel. Having said that, be wary of buying the very cheapest ones as some of them can be horrifically bad (narrow colour gamut and the colours always look a bit off no matter how you configure the settings). I suggest only buying ones with 99% or 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut or better, to ensure you at least get a baseline decent image quality.

I don't think it's worth paying more than about $200-300 for a portable monitor, but YMMV. Those popular espresso displays for example seem like a massive rip-off to me.

  • Thanks OP - ended up picking up the HD version at just over $250 https://amzn.asia/d/bYmS0oo
