  • I have these (for XBOX) and they've been fantastic - very long battery life
I had to get aftermarket deeper pads as my ears were touching the plastic and getting sore after a while

FYI, the price has been $499 for a really long time now so really, this is a $20 discount. RRP is misleading.

  • Wearing mine right now. Blasting Metallica due to tour announced. Amazing sound for the price. Make sure you have a sub to a HQ streaming service (eg. Tidal). Spotify won't cut it.

    • Are you excited for Evenensence too?

      • Not really although I have a couple of their songs on my regular playlist. Suicidal Tendencies will be good though, what a blast from the past.

    • Spotify on high quality will cut it.

Once you're using Bluetooth, your codec is the quality bottleneck, not the nitrate of the source (within reason).

You won't hear the difference between Spotify and Tidal over Bluetooth.

      • +2

I only use mine with the supplied dongle so not with bluetooth.

  • Do these auto switch on and off audio when connected via PS5 like Pulse 3Ds or are they like Steelseries etc and you have to manually change audio from headset to hdmi

    • +1

There's a 5-10 minute auto-detect silence period where it shuts off. Can be annoying if you're not in a game or app, but you get a voice telling you if it does. If you're in menus or scrolling, there's nearly always some background audio.

It's adjustable with bluetooth, the dongle connection, or the app if you wire it into a PC to modify/update firmware. You'll also need the Dongle updated too if you have the PS5/ PC version.

The only difference is the xbox has Dolby Heaphones for Atmos hardware in the Xbox version FWIU.

    • these will auto switch on/off the source.

refer to my older comments: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15779623/redir

I already responded to your post about it.

      • Yer I know thanks
Just making sure they were the same ones

        • there are only 2 versions. the Xbox and the PS5 version.

Both are identical with the only difference is the Xbox comes with built-in license of Dolby Atmos license

          • @meong: Ok thanks
New to all these fancy headsets

    • No auto switch on means you need to manually turn on the headset by pressing and holding the power button.

It does feature auto switch off when the headset becomes inactive. You can adjust the auto switch off timing using the Windows software or phone app, with options ranging from 5 minutes to hours, or you can disable the auto switch-off feature entirely

Unless they've pushed the pricing up $50 from LY - this isn't really a deal. Only $20 off.

They were previously $499 Playstation and $549 Xbox version. Now the RRP pricing is showing $549/599.

Paid RRP for these 14 months ago. Very good headphones and well worth the money. Flawless latency and the sound quality is very good. Only downsides would be they are quite heavy and the mic quality is average considering the price of the headphones.

    • Yeh agree they need to bump the mic quality considering the competition, but then again those competitors dont get the frequency response accuracy the maxxies do.

Been happy with build quality? I've seen a lot of moping about that on reddit

      • +1

Build quality is fine. Quite premium and solid.

I use them for ~20-25 hours a week and have them sitting on a headphone stand when not in use. The leather headband strap has stretched/sagged a bit but nothing too concerning.

Pads are still in great condition. Have been tempted to get some of the Wicked Cushions replacement pads to try out but I'm happy with the seal/comfort of the stock ones.

Finally close to original MSRP, but they're a different prospect 2 years later. Expect lots of headphone brands to start launching high quality closed backs that have good low latency audio quality.

AKG are already angling for this, expecting similar from Sennheiser, maybe Hifiman, Shure.

    • If it's just as a gaming headphone, sure. Anything is going to be cheaper/better.

"High Quality" does a lot of lifting here. Beats, Bose, Airpods Max is "High Quality", I'd rather have the Maxwells.

Especially on places like rtings or others that review headphones using measuring standards,

The Audeze Maxwell are a premium audio product, the advantage is it's Planar Magnetic. Sure, it's a 'discounted' Planar, so it can be damaged if dropped or thrown at a wall, and they can pick up EMF from nearby devices. Typical home use will be fine in most cases.

Anything with a dongle using 2.4ghz is going to thrash bluetooth headphones. mainly with quality and features, because BT cannot change or upgrade beyond certain specs. Second stream audio i.e. Game vs Chat mixing is not easily possible either without a dongle.

Audeze also make the Pulse Elite Planar Magnetic's for Sony Playstation, not that you hear too much about the Pulse Elite.

      • The Pulse Elite disconnect a lot I’ve read

      • Ok, so I'm not really sure where you went wrong with my post - where I mentioned none of the brands you're hinting at or directly referring to in order counter my comment - but a quick look at my profile history on this website would have assuaged you further.

Beats capitalised on a lack of fashionable on-ears on the market and originally did drive portable music forward over 15 years ago, but they were always more style than substance. Apple and Bose both do excellent ANC, but yes of course ANC still comes at the expense of audio quality due to the requirements for a cancelling wave. Again, none of this has anything to do with the comment I've made.

EMF is not a significant factor for a modern wireless headphone in most consumer environments… you'd only come into those kinds of issues in a studio setting, and there's the ability to plug in the headset via suitable USB-C cable if that's a challenge for you?

Anything with a dongle using 2.4ghz is going to thrash bluetooth headphones. mainly with quality and features, because BT cannot change or upgrade beyond certain specs. Second stream audio i.e. Game vs Chat mixing is not easily possible either without a dongle.

This kind of comment shows very little awareness about ongoing development of wireless transmission techniques and - in the case of bluetooth - codecs, which substantially improve compression - including offering lossless compression - and that's just with today's low power-transmission capabilities. Game/chat mix is such a bizarre thing to focus in on, and merely reflects an old solve for consoles that couldn't deal with mixing a variety of sound sources. The modern version remains low quality, and is now pointless.

Audeze also make the Pulse Elite Planar Magnetic's for Sony Playstation, not that you hear too much about the Pulse Elite.

Because Sony's peripheral brand is in the toilet beyond rabid Playstation fans and kids. It's got a very bright default EQ, so you need a Playstation to customise that EQ, or it's a pain to individually EQ on every device. You also need a PS5 to update it, and you'll also see I've posted before about the Pulse Elite on this website and people got incredibly mad because I 'assumed' a lot about the technology before release. It's a solid product.

Not sure why you wasted all this effort to be honest, but hey thanks for working on your knowledge and keep at it! Feel free to strawman me with reddit logic another time if that's your calling in life.

        • What developments in bluetooth are you refering to?

AFAIK, the current best bluetooth codec is LDAC which is lossless at 990kbps.

But it is variable bitrate which varies depending on external RF interference and signal strength.
I hardly ever get 990kbps, it's almost always lower, even in the best environements usually ~600kbps.

Also im pretty sure that ive noticed a SLIGHT latency issue with LDAC compared to the dongle.
So i too use my maxwells with the dongle.

Do you use yours with LDAC instead of the dongle?

Admittedly i dont know what protocol/codecs the dongle uses but i feel like it has less latency, better stability, more range and i just assumed better bandwidth/quality given my personal experience with LDAC.

          • @Tamagotchi Breeder: LDAC isn't lossless at 990 kbps, it's just fairly close. aptX Lossless operates at close to 1.2 Mbit, so it's able to accomplish 16-bit 44.1kHz lossless.

Going forward, you've got LC3 for lossy, LC3Plus as a more capable and flexible option, and both have low latency modes that go much lower than anything out there being sold as a bluetooth standard, hardware feature permitting.

The Maxwell supports both LC3 and LC3Plus (one of vanishingly few currently on market), and I believe the latter is what the dongle is using.

  • Great set of cans for gaming with the convenience of not having to switch for mysic/movies.

Be advised they are quite heavy, almost half a kg, if you're thinking about getting a pair and wear them for long periods of time, start the neck exercises now.

  • I've owned these for about 6 months now and to be honest they're "just ok" and would find it hard to recommend them to someone looking for new headphones. I reckon most people that own them are justifying the money they spent on them. From all the Youtube reviews for wireless headsets this one usually comes out on top but lurking on the Audeze subreddit tells a different story of constant issues and no general consensus of "wow these are truly amazing".

    The good -
    They sound good.
    The Bluetooth distance is good.
    The battery life is good.

    The Bad -
    The Mic is average.
    They are heavy.
    The earpads are uncomfortable.
    the headband is uncomfortable
Took about 4 months for the pressure point on top of you head to accept them.

    • Have to agree, the mic is terrible. But that is the case on most decent "gaming" headsets as there is money to be made in standalone mics.

    • Eh generally every game/brand etc subreddit is full of people complaining, that's why they're there. People who are happy with the product are actually busy using it.

Also I've heard a friend in our group use theirs and talk through the mic, it's pretty good for a wireless gaming headset. What are you actually comparing it to when you say it's average?

      • It's not a standout Microphone for me to say this is the best wireless mic, it's just average. comments are is that the lack of quality is not with the physical mic but the headsets firmware and that just comes with the territory that Audeze are still new players to the gaming headset industry.

What's the alternative though? There is no better alternative wireless headset with on par sound quality for the price point.

The Mic is average. - So are almost all wireless headsets (or gaming head set mics). Solution - run an external mic for significantly better quality.
They are heavy. - 100% agree. Would be great if they could use alternative materials and sacrifice battery life to make them lighter.
The earpads are uncomfortable. User dependant. I find them completely fine. Clamping force is ok and they're not too shallow.
The headband is uncomfortable. Agree - would be nice if it had more padding/better secure fit.

Ultimately - they're not perfect, with many valid areas for improvement but if sound quality is your #1 metric then these are better than all alternative options by quite a bit. Audeze should bring out an improved version of them and fix the above.

My opinion after using them for 14 months now and have also used: HD599, HD600, Fidelio X2HR, HyperX Cloud II Wireless, Arctis Nova Pros.

      • Yeah that's right there is no S tier Wireless headset out there and every headset will have their own different shortfalls, it's just making sure that when people drop that much money on a premium headset to know what they're getting.

The Maxwell is significantly more comfortable than the Penrose but still has some improving to be done.

Surprised no one mentioned the biggest gripe I have with these headphones which would be the max volume. It just isn't that loud especially watching Netflix on Nvidia Shield through the included dongle.

    • This issue seems to be a 50/50 for people, the previous firmware Release v1.0.1.63 improved the volume issue for me to an acceptable level.

      • Well then I must've fallen in the unfortunate camp as both the dongle and headphones are on the latest firmware v1.0.1.74.
