  • I wonder if it is worth it. It is minimum cost $2376 on a 24-month period. If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term.

    • You only pay the pro-rated for the maximum repayment voucher, $800, as per the CIS of terms and conditions.

      • Isnt the cancellation fee pro rated against the $1,200 voucher value? It says the $1,200 gift card will replace the value of the voucher stated in the CIS??

It's worth it to sign up for the gift cards and then cancel if you don't mind jumping through a few hoops and having a credit check done for each plan.

Basically, you buy one or multiple plans at $99 each for the first month, then cancel them immediately (over the phone with the JB Mobile/Telstra team is less awkward).

For maximum profit: when buying 3 plans, you'd pay $297 immediately out of pocket at the store and receive $3600 in gift cards, then get hit with 3 x ~$766 voucher repayment fees upon cancelling unless you are lucky and they don't charge you for each one (which I have read in previous comments has happened - and someone else in this exact thread apparently was fortunate to not be billed).

So total initial out of pocket costs would be just under $2600 for a total of $3600 in gift cards… and you can hop onto the JB Hi-fi Mobile app for live chat and just continually ask for refunds of the first month fees, saying that you'd been told on the phone by a customer support agent that live chat would be able to refund the 3 x $99 charges once processed - might have to go through a few chat agents until one is helpful and will do it for you.

If you get the refunds of those upfront monthly charges, final total would be about $2300 in voucher repayment fees for the $3600 in gift cards.

      • What should I say to the JBHIFI live chat agent to get the first month fee back?

        • that you'd been told on the phone by a customer support agent that live chat would be able to refund the 3 x $99 charges once processed

          • @cooni: Thanks for help me to read the comment.

  • Can anyone tell me when this expires?

Current voucher offer is until 30/10

I did the previous $1200 deal and cancelled the same day (Not even an hour after signing up) and never got billed for the cancellation! When did other people get invoiced for the $800 ETC? I'm confused, but happy if I dont have to pay it lol

    • +1

You most likely would have. Small chance u didn’t though. There’s options to get it automatically taken out of ur account or doing it urself

    • +2

They send you an invoice after it's been cancelled, it'll ask you to pay or it'll get debited in 2-3 weeks from the card on file.

      • Definitely no email! Nothing in Junk either. I'll just wait and hope it never gets deducted XD

        • Check you my telstra app?

          • @Turd: Nothing attached to the account anymore, so nothing even loads because I have no telstra products

            • +3

@LittleMIssPanda: Under the My Telstra app, not the JB one, go to payments

and it should apear there, unless the account you used to login is different to the mobile one

    • depends on how you canceled it? I feel the $800 shows up when trying to cancel

      • cancelled it through the JB mobile app

    • From the T&Cs on JB

      Can I cancel my plan?
Yes, you can cancel your plan at any time by calling us on 13 50 75 or visiting a JB Hi-Fi store. When you cancel, your service will be disconnected immediately. We won’t refund any money you’ve already paid and you’ll need to pay out any remaining Voucher Repayment Fee.

    • How long has it been since then?

Anyone else also had this happen?

    • Better pray then don't come after you after 1-2 years! lol

    • I cancelled on Tuesday 22 Oct, and received a bill by email around 24 hours after cancelling.
The email said "This invoice is scheduled to be paid by your nominated payment method on 05 Nov 2024"

The due date (05 Nov 2024) was 2 weeks after the cancellation date.

      Image of invoice attached.

    • Similar situation with you, but I got an email invoice for the voucher repayment. There’s a link to make the payment but when I click the link and log in there’s nothing I need to pay off on my account.

      • It’s dragging out for me, some sort of massive it error with Telstra and jb where I have no way to pay the etc despite getting a letter requesting I pay.

        • I followed what Turd said and found the bill in the my telstra app. I think you should check again. If it's not there it will auto pay on the due date using your card provided to sign up.

    What's the early termination fee? $2300? $800?
    Will they block my account?
    Credit check?
Do I have to repay the jb voucher?
Can I use the jb voucher to pay for the phone?
What if I'm already a telstra customer?
    Any deals for flip?
    Can someone explain the deal?

      any other questions?

    • +1

      Yes

Am i working this out correctly with the cancellation after a day or so? Cancellation might be $800 but thinking if I wait say 15 days before cancelling so its towards end of the first month, then it would be the $766.67 since I'm paying the first month of the plan.

    $1200 (Gift Card) - $99 (1month Plan) - $766.67 (Telstra ProRate Cancellation)

      = +$334.33 left

    • yes that is what happened last time.

    • Cancellation is $766, then speak to telstra chat and get the first month fee back

      • As long as you don't activate the sim right?

        • Use*** it’s activated at start

        • The sim is activated already, just don't use it at all

So the whole exercise is to get $1200 of JB GC for $865? i.e 28% off?

  • Is this better or should I look at the Apple + Vodafone option to get an iPhone 16 Pro?

    • Ask to price match 16pro max 256gb for $1935 ;)

      • +1

Price match from JB Hifi? Which retailer is offering $1935 for 16 PM 256G?

      • Apparently you can't use the $1k gift card at Apple and price match too. No double dipping

For those who aren't playing the game, wait for Black Friday.

    • yeah I'm holding out for BF as im sure they'll do the $89 deal

      • +1

What's the $89 deal? Same $1200 voucher but only $89/mth instead of $99?

        • Yeah, the one they ran on during the Prime week a few weeks ago

  • If I've already got a JB HiFi mobile account with the current balance owing in 3 days and I sign up today and cancel today, would the ETC be owed in 3 days too?

  • Thanks OP, get to know this 1st time and I will head down to the local JB tonight.
May I know for those who have done it successfully before what is the best way to cancel?
    1) In the shop?
    2) Call JB/Telstra? (what number)
    3) Or use App (I currently with JB HiFi already with 1 active number, did a quick browse did not see where I can cancel my number, I assume it is not account termination? I don't wanna do anything silly which impacts my real number.)

At last, how do I attempt to get my 1st month fee refund?

    • +1

Use the jb hifi app to cancel the plan.

Use telstra website to ask for 1st month back.

      • Through chat? Is there a self service option to cancel

  • Can I use this gift card - say buy an iphone?

    • +1

      yes. anything in JBHifi

  • $89 -> $99 stops me from signing the new contract. :(

    • Why? If you only want to benifit from the Gc in cancellation you come out ahead

      • can you only do this once?
i thinking you would be black listed and wouldn't be able to go back to take advantage of this deal?

        • I’ll find out this weekend :)

          • @fadzsolz: lol, how long ago did you do it the first time?

i think i will wait and hope they have the $89 2 year plan again with the $1200 GC

            • +1

@Hugh G Rection: Got one 2 weeks ago.

Jbhifi guy said I can get 2 more easy.

Need one for the ps5 pro so m goo for now

Telstra essential plan is $75 month for 180GB.
Their basic plan at 50gb isn't enough for me, a somewhat heavy mobile date user

I used to pay $40 month for Telstra and it's creeped up over time and eliminated the discounts I used to have and now paying $75 And no discount
I tried yesterday again to get some sort of discount.

I need Telstra service for the rural areas and where I work…
…given all this, $99 month with $1200 gift card actually seems like a good deal.

I still can't justify $100 month on a mobile though

  • Judging by the previous comments, it's not guaranteed that you will get the $99 back, right? JB's contract in fact says they won't refund you any money already paid.

    Questions:
    1. Can someone confirm if they did indeed receive the $99 first month fee back by not using the SIM at all?
    2. Is that refund automatic or requires speaking to someone?
    3. If speaking to someone, is that by speaking to JB or Telstra?

    Thanks in advance.

    • After cancelling the plan and the plan disappearing in Jbhifi app, go to Telstra app and request for a refund as you cancelled the plan and never used it.

  • I ported out of Telstra 4 days ago, is there a minimum time before I can port back in? I can’t find any reference to it.

    • +1

      30 days

      • Awesome thx

    • I've had success being 24 hours away.

  • +2

Signed up for the offer last Thursday and cancelled same day. Invoice came through for $766.59 and then I hit up live chat in the JB app to see if I could get the $99 back. Was unsuccessful there, so tried the Telstra app chat instead, and voila $99 fee refunded.

So all in all, $766.59 for a $1200 GC, a very tidy ~36% off straight onto a PS5 Pro pre-order.

  • Dumb question Once I cancel the plan can I still port my number out or the number is dead?

    • +1

If you don't want to lose that number, just port it out and it will auto cancel the JB/Telstra plan and they will send you the final bill.

Don't cancel first. You will lose the number

  • Does anyone have any insights on the $1200 gift card offer that ends today? Do you think they might extend it at the same value or reduce it?

I’m feeling FOMO but also wondering—what if they increase it to $1400 on Black Friday?
