Volunteer Leave (VIC)

Hi all, I’m lucky in that my employer provides some volunteer leave to be used each year, however I feel like I don’t make use of it enough as I just go to the same places.

I was wondering if anyone else has places they volunteer or if they know of good causes that accept it?

I’m trying to branch outside of the Salvos/soup kitchen etc as I’ve done that before, I’m trying to think of places that may not get as many people. E.G my employer has connections with Greyhound Victoria so I’ve done that in the past which has been great!

Unfortunately I was very closely affected by a family member’s suicide this year so with Movember upcoming up quickly anything in that space would take precedence if I could help in any way.

VIC but ideally Metro Melbourne!

Thank you for any suggestions!

A lot of “volunteer” places require you to pay to volunteer. Our work tried to organise an event where we go and pack food, and they wanted us to pay $35pp… naturally, there wasn’t many that wanted to go

    • The problem for many charities is it takes work away from trained volunteers to handle them for the day, and when it's a corporate one you can get all kinds of people, including ones who are just there for a day out of the office and not to really contribute.

It's like a work experience kid, to give them any actual experience takes more work than you get out of them in a week. Unless you just send them on coffee runs or let them "shadow".

  • How many days do you get? I just looked and I can do 2 days a year

St Kilda Mums was awesome if you're handy. I got to spend a day fixing prams and stuff like that, it was really enjoyable (and for a good cause).
