Recommendations: Zip-off / Convertible Hiking Trousers

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations on trousers that zip-off around the knee to convert them into shorts.

These look good though I would much prefer primarily or entirely natural fibres (cotton, hemp, etc).

Use case is for travelling light to places with unpredictable weather, for work or getting out in nature (hikes, mostly). Any and all recommendations are appreciated. Thanks!

The link you included are for work pants, not hiking pants. Generally for hiking pants you want something lighter weight and breathable - so buy from an outdoor brand or shop. Unless you are winter hiking in somewhere like Tasmania. Generally your legs will be warmer when hiking as they are moving, unlike your core for example. Also something with some water resistance is handy.

Also, I don't think any zip off pants looks good. They are a tradeoff for comfort over looks!

I prefer durability over lightweight. All of my current hiking pants are heavy. If I need some air, I'd prefer to wear shorts over something thin, personally.

I didn't mean "sexy" when I said they "look good", haha.

      • Durability doesn't necessarily mean heavy. My longest lasting hiking pants lasted about ten years of heavy travel and hiking across five continents. They were a lightweight nylon or polyester.

Look out for some deals on frangas because you'll be fighting off the ladies in zip-off pants, or as I like to call 'em: panty-deleters

There's a reason that cotton isn't used for hiking- once it gets wet it takes forever to dry.

Hiking gear will typically be synthetic (or for some things, wool).

  • I've had the zip off hiking pants ages ago, Thomas Cook clothing. Happily gave them up after a couple of trips. You have to take your boots off to remove the zip off section, or to re-attach. Decided that was more trouble than it was worth.

    • I solve this problem with more zippers - zip up boots!

I also saw a pair that zipped vertically as well as horizontally at the knee so that you didn't have to remove your shoes at all.

You were doing it wrong. You're supposed to wear your zip off pants with Birkenstocks and white socks.

  • I use Craghoppers.

Unfortunately hard to get a hold of within Aus nowadays, but very comfortable, full range of reliable pockets, and great warranty.
