  • Based on this

    2G: GSM B2/B3/B5/B8, CDMA BC0(800MHz); 3G: WCDMA B1/2/4/5/8, TD-SCDMA B34/B39, CDMA2000: CDMA BC0 (800MHz); 4G: TD-LTE B34/B38/B39/B40/B41(100M), FDD-LTE B1/B2/B4/B5/B8; 4G+: TD-LTEB38C/B39C/B40C/B41C/B39A+B41A, LTE FDD B1C/B3C/B1A+B3A

It does do 4G, so you should be fine. You shouldn't need to change SIMs and no software updates are neccessarily going to do anything.

    • thanks geekcohen
The specs are from th eEbay ad.
seeing as it is the same Make/model, the specs should be the same.
What is spinning my head is that Optus is going to block all "Oppo F5 Student" phones based on their list, not on testing

google the serial number or model number on the actual phone settings (*#06#)

    • Thanks 87 percent
I got the first part but pasting into google doesn't work
      Can you rephrase it?

The main concern regarding the 3G shutdown is not about whether your phone can support 4G. It is that some older phones are designed to only route 000 calls through 3G. Even if your phone supports 4G and even VoLTE, you might still not be able to call 000.

How old is your phone and is it Australian stock? You can check your IMEI here.
    https://amta.org.au/3g-closure-old/check-my-device/

Regarding you receiving the same message when you change to a pixel phone, the provider doesn't do a live check but relies on records that might be days or weeks old.

    • Thanks for the info will check

  • The Pixel 3 is supposed to be 4G but in my earlier comment "What is spinning my head is that Optus is going to block all "Oppo F5 Student" phones based on their list, not on testing"

I didn't think they are actively "blocking" non compatible phones comes 28 october but rather non-supported phones simply wont work after they switch off their 3G equipment. Did they tell you that they are going to block these devices?

Regarding your pixel 3, did you run the imei in the link i shared above? It might be a 4G phone but it can still be configured to only route 000 calls via 3G.

    • They will be TAC blocking from the 28th.

      • Thanks for pointing that out. So devices will be disconnected. Haven't been following this space closely.

  • Thanks,
    Just ran the link.
It's telling me the Pixel 3 is an Oppo F5 Student, so I am up the creek

    On 28th will Optus either
    1. just block the IMIE,
    2. ping each phone to confirm their status
    3. Allow all calls and leave it to users to find out if they can answer
Would this apply to Telstra and Vodafone as well

    • "Would this apply to Telstra and Vodafone as well"
Vodafone switched of their 3g earlier this year

    • By running the link, i presume you meant via the sms method? If so, you need to try the IMEI method. When i use the sms method just then, the result stated that it was based on their records from 30 September. This is Telstra so not sure about Optus.

If you want to check a phone that is not your usual phone, use the imei method.
