Paid for Police Check and Not Required

Company is a leading "Side gig" app. Client was leading AUStralian Postal provider doing a seasonal recruitment.

Was told to complete to docs and training. Mention of an induction at 7am the next day (seems dodgy in retrospect). Part of this was a functional assessment and $50 police check.

Paid for the check, they've failed my functional assessment and ghosted after that. Unsure if I was being "gee'd up"/misled to buy a police check. Unsure if this is standard recruitment but seems dodgy to me.

I don't need a police check as such and cancelled for a refund.

      They were deemed dysfunctional.

OP delivered undamaged parcel in safe place and on time so did not pass criteria to be a courier :)

You have to film yourself doing work movements. looking back some movements were off. Still seems strange and I think they just force alot of people to get the police cert.

LOL so you admit to doing the movements wrong in the video but still think Auspost is out to scam people into buying a $50 police check. Got it.

It's like slightly off and I have six months full time experience in a busy warehouse

@Cave Fire: So from your experience, you would know that someone doing the moments 'slightly' off, isn't a good thing then?

Auspost gets lots of people applying for jobs, if you can't do the movements correctly in a prerecorded video that you can redo as many times as you like until you get them correctly, then you most likely won't do them correctly in the work place and are at a risk of a workers comp claim.

Live and learn for next time.

    So you got the refund?

You had them do the police check? So you sent this random contact all your ID documents and payment?

  • Seems like a recruitment scam. Report it to the app and Scamwatch.

Police checks are around $50 (but vary depending on the state and the type of check) so the amount is fine; but usually its done as the last thing once you have passed all the other requirements. Still, perhaps for this job they do the check first to make sure they dont waste time on high risk applicants, which is fairly common in high turnover jobs. Do you know if they did a police check? If they did then get them to provide it to you, you can use it for other jobs. If they didnt actually do the check then push for a refund

Chances are they are progressing through the 1000s of applications they received to get the staff they need, and will sort out the admin for the non selected people later on. But certainly keep chasing them, but dont make yourself look like a psycho

Should've just paid for your own police check and then given them a copy.

If it is to do with some sort of Postal Service, then not surprised about the police check requirement.

Was the "functional assessment" a physical medical or similar?

Seems odd they want you to pay them $50. They need to issue an invoice for this.

You don't pay the company directly, they ask you to supply a police report, so you give them a copy. The report normally lasts for 3-12 months.

Its like saying you need to have a drivers license or WWCC.

  • Police check is another company but seems strongly linked to the app company.

  • Name and shame?

  • How did you fail the functional assessment?
