how good or trash is this?

  • +9

Where's the bargain? Seems expensive for a meh dashcam.

Just because Aldi is selling something, doesn't mean it's a bargain.

    • +8

Agreed. Once upon a time, ALDI had some good bargain buys.

These days, it seems like 90% of ALDI stuff is the same quality and price as Kmart (or Ozito, etc).

It's just available for a short period of time and well placed for impulsive buyers.

      • +2

Yes! ALDI used to have awesome special buy sales. To the point where I used to religiously check the catalogue for the upcoming Wednesday and Saturday sales. The motorbike gear and ski gear sales used to have droves of people rocking up on open. Each year they have gotten worse. Smaller selection and higher prices to the point where it's not even worthwhile trying for unless there is leftover stock that gets put on clearance prices.

Looks like this generic $45 one from Aliexpress except AE is wider angle 150 degrees.

Also apparently it was was released worldwide in 2019 but only became available for sale in Australia in 2023.. So old stock overseas being dumped here.

this could be a good alternative, 70mai Dash Cam 3 M200 with Sony Starvis sensor
    $71 delivered with tax

    • +3

Small correction. Starvis 2. Much better for HDR.

      • -1

        Correct.

Starvis 2 even with 1080p only sensor, would shit all over the Uniden.

For those playing at home, WDR is a big red flag it's a shit sensor cos only decent dashcams use HDR.

        • Lol, in camera world - WDR is better than HDR…….. This isn't a tv…….

    • I recently got this model. I was unable to transfer videos from the dash cam to my phone or laptop, or even view them on my phone.

      • even by reading the sdcard ?

  • Everyone needs to watch this video before buying a cam https://youtu.be/4AnyhHl3_tE?si=yiBxEuw2Zp9MoYSO

Or at least skip to 10:45

      That description is dodgy. Says

Its super capacitor provides greater reliability in extreme weather conditions compared to traditional batteries

      But later says

      1. The dash cam requires continuous connection to an external power source (USB hardware kit not included) during operation.

Dashcams have a supercapacitor so they can safely close the recordings when power turns off - but this one needs a hardwire connection, so power never turns off. So what's the point of having a supercapacitor?

      • I believe it is saying it needs power to run as does every other dashcam out there, the capacitor works the same as other dashcams where it replaces the need for a battery. Nothing wrong with this at all!

        • -3

"continuous connection" means a hardwired connection, i.e. connected to a power source that is continuously on. Most dashcams allow you to plug into your car's cigarette lighter socket or a USB socket, but those turn off when the engine turns off - so not a "continuous connection", hence the need in most dashcams for a backup battery or a supercapacitor.

Although the pictures in the eBay listing show a cigarette lighter plug, described as "USB Car Charger", the written description of what's in the box does not include this, and they explicitly say it's not included with their "USB hardware kit not included" warning.

          • @Russ: Clearly written:
            In the Box:

            • 1x 4K Dash Cam (Front Camera)

            • 1x Rear Camera with 5-6 meter cable

            • 1x Type-C USB Power Cable (3.5m/12ft) ———

            • 1x 64GB Micro SD Card

            • 5x Cable Clips

            • 1x Double-sided Tape

            • 1x Pry Tool

            • 2x Electrostatic Stickers

            • 1x User Manual

            • @Johnche: None of the lines you listed says "USB car charger" or "power supply".

Type-C USB Power cable means ONE END of the cable has a USB-C plug, for plugging into the dashcam. What are you going to do when you discover the other end has no connector, it's just two wires?

          • +1

@Russ: Dashcams have a capacitor/battery so that they have enough power to have time to safely shutdown when the USB power turns off. Otherwise the SD card could become corrupt.

It has nothing to do with enabling continuous recording without power.

If you want continuous recording, you need a hardwire connection to the car's battery.

Cheaper dashcams have batteries instead of capacitors. Capacitors are better as heat from being left out in the sun is less likely to damage them.

Hope this clears it up for you. Nothing about the products description is incorrect.

            • @PainToad: I know perfectly well what a supercapacitor does, and why it's preferred over a backup battery. I even described the purpose of a supercapacitor in my posts above.

The ebay listing for this dashcam says it requires "continuous power", which means the "USB power turns off" you describe will never happen.

"Continuous power" requires a hardwire kit, so the dashcam is connected to a power supply that is connected to a +12V source that does not turn off when the engine turns off. And then the listing explicitly says they don't supply the hardwire kit, that's the bit where it says "(USB hardware kit not included)", and also the bit where the power supply isn't listed in the "in the box" section of the description.

Secondly, having "continuous power" makes a backup battery or supercap completely unnecessary - the power never turns off, so recordings can easily be saved when the journey stops.

              • @Russ:

The ebay listing for this dashcam says it requires "continuous power"

You're over thinking it. All that means if it requires continuous power to operate. Turn the power off, it shutsdown.
