Looking for an Air Fryer That ISN'T Non-Stick

Hi, I've been toying with getting an air fryer for a while now, but I want one that isn't riddled with Teflon, and that's hard to find.

I was thinking of getting the Healthy Choice 6.5L because it has a glass basket and has good reviews.

However, Big W has a (smaller) air fryer on special at the moment made by the familiar Sunbeam brand. And it's half its usual price, on sale for $89, RRP $179.

It says it's non-stick but supposedly, "is PFOA and PTFE free for peace of mind" and is ceramic & "copper infused".

If you wanted to avoid non-stick cookware, would you trust this appliance or is it marketing sleight of hand?

P.S. A small capacity air fryer is fine because I'm only cooking for myself.

I recommend just buying the oven style air fryers (which you can line with foil). example

Even if you're cooking for yourself, you can spread the food more evenly on the rack and it cookes more evenly / faster. Takes up a bit more room on your kitchen benchtop but it's more versatile than the pod style air fryers. Can cook pizza for eg.

    Ninja Crispi

  • Sounds like you have watched too many teflon flue videos..

  • You can turn pretty much any air fryer non stick by getting a stainless steel insert like this.

    sleight of hand

I either line the air fryer with baking paper, raise the food on a steel stand or put the food into a ceramic bowl.

Healthy Choice glass basket and mesh tray are dishwasher safe. What's not to like?

  • I have the Sunbeam one, and its not big enough , go an oven style.

TL:DR - No, No, No… Air Fryers are the Worst !

Personally, I'd suggest you just use your oven, or upgrade it if it's crap
It doesn't need to be gas, fan forced modern electric ovens are good.

Our current oven is ancient, a non fan forced electric oven from probably the late 80's… that does suck.
If yours is from that that very old school generation of crudness, then definitely get a newer one (even if second hand from Gumtree).

Then it's more economical when it comes to the price of the food, and electricity you' use to do a big batch each time you turn it on (to make it worth while).

That way, you can make a point of cooking loads of roast veggies, and meat etc all at once.
Leaving you loads for multiple meals (either eat the rest as left overs in the fridge, and/or freeze the rest for later).

That's the smartest way to think if you're just cooking for yourself.

If you insist on buying something new… the guys have the right idea with the mini oven.
Just make sure it's cost effective to run though.

My folks wasted over $500 (on special) for a big Sunbeam air fryer, and it was a disaster.
The damn thing took up way more space than they expected, valuable counter space, it caused loads of problems.

This is what they regretted buying, a philips airfryer xxl hd9650/93

This is a very similar (or identical) version…
    https://www.philips.com.au/c-p/HD9650_91/premium-airfryer-xx…

Instantly, like literally the first time we used it, the entire insides got covered with grease that literally baked into everything, and will never come off.
So it's not just about the bucket/basket that you put it in, it goes everywhere. Remember it's fan forced, so aerosolised burnt oil and fats get spread everywhere.

I scrubbed the bugger like crazy, and I just got no where.
It's gross as hell, not what they had in mind.

And even if you just ignore that, it's such a burden to clean every time, that my parents just won't use it.
Most the food just comes out completely dehydrated, just horrible.

You can't fit anywhere near as much as you'd expect, you constantly have to guess how to adjust recipes you find online as they are usually made with a different, specific fryer in mind etc.

They only spent that much money because they intended to use it everyday, and thought it would be life changing.
But it just sits in the bottom of the cupboard, covered in dust.

Even with our crappy old oven, that is still a billion times better than an air fryer.
Don't forget to watch video reviews, read the comments, and maybe ask about the specific models you're looking at, on some niche forum for air fryers.

Seriously, use a proper, relatively modern fan forced oven, do batch cooking, or go the mini oven route if you must.

If you still want one, then be smart and borrow one from family/friends, use it for a month at least, then decide if you still want one.
If you did that now, you'd have a really good sense of what you want, just in time for Black Friday.

But I still think the best advice for you is… just don't buy an air fryer, you'd do more good giving that money to a charity then buying one of those damn misery devices.

    • wow… i like mine

    • I use my airfyer oven almost everyday. Just wipe it straight away if anything splatters, which I've only had with salmon skin as an issue so far. The rest all comes out and is washed in the sink or dishwasher. Can put eggs in, have a shower and come back to a cooked breakfast. Family dinner can be done in 15-20mins depending on what we're having. Honestly a great convenience.

    • Perhaps your airfryer was old stock? Should have tried a fresh one.

You've already got teflon in your bloodstream, why are you scared of a little more? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W74aeuqsiU

I have both Ninja oven style one and the healthy choice glass one.

Ninja one is great, but things like chips dont get quite as crispy. But I like it for stuff like nuggets, pizza etc.

Healthy choice one is fkn awesome!!!!! Cleans sooo easily in dishwasher, no non-stick to worry about at all. I just spray the stainless steel mesh with a bit of olive oil and have had no issues with food sticking too. Air fry capability is great.

I don't believe the sunbeam one - non stick sucks avoid it.

I know someone who has the healthy choice on and likes it you can get it on catch as well https://www.catch.com.au/product/healthy-choice-6-5l-glass-d…

I got a combo airfryer oven that looks exactly like this but has another brand name on it https://www.myer.com.au/p/kitchen-couture-25-litre-air-fryer… got mine for half this price though. I like that it's very quite and can fit more than a regular airfryer. Kmart does a similar one https://www.kmart.com.au/product/25l-air-fryer-and-oven-silv…

There's also this style https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/air-fryer-electric-fryers-conve… but I don't have any feedback on it.
