Will This Replace My Smart TV's Broken Wi-Fi?

I have an LG smart TV with broken/inconsistent wifi so I use a long cable through the house into the TV's Ethernet plug. Will a wifi range extender allow me to send a wifi signal from the modem to a wifi extender (in the lounge) and then plug ethernet from this to my TV to allow Netflix streaming?

I would just buy a cheap powerline adaptor, since it's only your TV you want to connect with ethernet.

Powerline adaptors pass your network traffic over the electrical circuits of your home, instead of receiving wifi and then re-broadcasting it on a different SSID which can add noise to your wifi (negatively impacting performance of other devices, even if they are not connecting to the wifi repeater)

Other alternative is to just forget about your smart TV's wifi and use your PS / XB game console (if you got one) or hook up a Amazon Fire TV stick or Chromecast with Google TV.

    • Thanks powerline adapters sound like a good idea. I like just using 1 remote so not sure those other devices allow that?

9 years ago, Google added the ability for Chromecast to respond to your TV's remote control via HDMI CEC

usually your TV has at least one HDMI CEC port, it's specially marked so make sure your device is plugged into that port.

Make sure they are wired to the same power loop.

Possibly, yes or get a Google TV (or similar) instead and not use the "Smart" element of your TV.

Too many variables to say yes or no..

It may… It may not fix your issue.

Most wifi extender with ethernet port would work in your situation. Just make sure the feature is supported by checking the manual before purchasing one.

Eg) TPLink RE305 suppprts what you want.
You can see it in page 5 and 6 of its manual.

N300 is a cheaper one too, I use one with my DVR that has ethernet only

I have a Deco mesh and it shows up in the same app as part of the mesh, which is pretty nice.

Does your phone and other devices work where your TV is? Get a Google Tv or Amazon fire stick instead. A wifi extender will effectively halve your main wifi network speed.

  • Thanks everyone, I did not realise the extenders affect your speeds. Will look into Google Tv, Amazon fire stick etc

  • Ended up with Google Streamer. Thanks all
