All I ever see of these "private" rental companies are the posts people put up here after hiring one 8 weeks ago and getting a fine in the mail for a traffic ticket 2 weeks ago when they were not even in the same state and a bill for 10mm scratch that is going to cost 4x the RRP of buying a brand new car.

    What about insurance

You don't get insurance, you get "discretionary risk protection" where any payout is at the whims of the board of the discretionary mutual fund. Seriously.

By offering Protection that is discretionary and not an insurance product, the Mutual is able to offer its Members a financial product for management of their risks without establishing an insurance company. The Board has the absolute discretion to accept or reject a Member’s claim.

I wouldn't trust Turo as far as I can throw a car. Because it wouldn't be insured even if I could throw one.

  • domestic travel insurance doesn't cover "car share", because it is not a car rental company.

turo's insurance is what ever they offer per car.

if you were getting the car long term then it could probably be cheaper to buy your own car insurance and then cancel it. many car insurance companies offer 14 -21 days cooling off period.

I used Turo in the US pre-covid. it was okay. it was cheap. except when I was dropping off the car I noticed weird welding seems in the frame across back door area. I think my vehicle may have been two halves welded together :( it was the end of the trip so I just forgot about it

How much cheaper? It would want to be much, much cheaper for all the potential hassles.

  • I only ever see them on YouTube, when the person who rents it takes it somewhere dodgy, and the owner tracked it there with a secret GPS hidden on the car.
