Family restaurant Melbourne CBD

Hi all - we are spending the night in the city as a family (3 boys under 12) and were wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a decent family restaurant - maybe something that had a fairly decent selection/variety?

Any tips?

  • Too many food gatekeepers in Melbourne

    • Looks like they dislike you pointing out the truth…

      • Sydney is much more friendly

    McDonald's.

      HJ's with vouchers?

Rose Garden - Good asian food - quick and tasty
Doc 38 - Pizza is great for the kids and easy as well.

Depends on what else you prefer - I can rec depending on what you like

Personally I wouldn't recommend Rose Garden to someone that is spending a night in the city with 3 children. It is a very small and cheap (but good) Chinese food for a quick 15min bite.

I heard Vue de monde has a good selection of smaller sized meals. You might struggle to get a seat but give it a go.

    • That's a tall order

      • Well the op didn’t tell us anything about what kind of food they’d like or the budget. He/ she could be a Murdoch as far as we know. They can certainly afford it and the portions suit the kids.

The kids will probably appreciate McDonald's just as much if not more than any wanky Melbourne restaurant, if they are like every other kid in the world.

    • used to be good when they had one near Highpoint.
Food was alright, steaks were at the mercy of "chefs", shitloads of shoestring fries and the sauces werent bad either, but they closed…sigh

    • Closed on the weekend??

That end of the CBD is almost entirely offices with no retail outlets, so lots of them close over the weekend.

  • Any restaurant on Hardware Lane is usually pretty good. I recommend Max on Hardware, personally, especially for families.

I took my boys to Hofbrauhaus off Chinatown. They loved the sausages and pork shank. They even had a live band playing that night.

Secret Kitchen around the corner is also very good.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. A relaxed Asian place would be nice with a bit of variety (can't go wrong with fried chicken and rice for the kids). Pizza is a good shout too, although my wife is gluten and dairy free so it can be hit and miss. Hofbraushaus would have been fun but theyre booked out. No McDs for us.

Edit - oh, and I should say that if they did have a 'kids menu's that would be even better but not a must…

    • How you thought about KBBQ. Plenty of variety. Fried chicken as well. Yeonga. Bornga. only to name a couple. Or Thai, Dodee Paidang. Affordable and spacious restaurant.

I would imagine you're not after food court or chain restaurants you can find in the suburbs

Visitor's perspective: check out the dining options in Melbourne Central and Emporium Melbourne. Relaxed Asian: New Shanghai, HaiDiLao Hot Pot

    • Which one would have better options do you think?

      • New Shanghai does noodles & dumplings; HaiDiLao if the weather is cool and you're in the mood for hotpot, 4.9 Google stars from 3,567 reviews

      • HDL is fun for kids, they have dances, you can grt fancy noodle dance at your table, a self serve sauce and something else bar (cant remember what else I didnt use it), order via tablet, dipping things into hot pot, my son got a free toy, free snacks while waiting etc. Pricy but a good hot pot experience.
If hot pot is too intimidating (how long to cook something for… how much to order.. neglecting a pot so it winds up full of inedible stuff..) then New Shanghai has plenty of variety to choose from. Go the shanghainese dumplings.

  • TGI Fridays is very family friendly, especially earlier in the night. Yes, they have a kids menu.
