    Esim but curved screen

  • +16

Maybe it's just me but as soon as I see 'edge' 'curved' display.. it's a no from me

    • +2

i have s23 ultra, and i realised later that i dont like the curved screen

  • +1

    Whats wrong with curved screen?

    • +2

Harder to find tempered glass screen protectors

    • +12
      • Hard to find good curved screen protectors
      • Edge glare when using the display (from external light sources)
      • phantom touches, easy for palm to touch sides.
      • lack of protection, much more likely to crack/smash if dropped.

      • source; used to be a samsung edge man

      • +4

I had a look at the G85 in a shop and with bright lights around it was impossible to tilt it away from bright reflections on the curved edges. This would drive me crazy.

      • -7

There are curved screen glass protectors for $59 online. Also official silicone cases around $49 to protect the G85 from scratches. It's worth it to get these to maintain the resale value after 4-5 years when you resell it. I recently sold my dad's 9 year old iPhone 6S plus for $230 within 2hrs of listing it on Facebook because it was well looked after with the official screen protector and silicone case.

        • +8

iPhone is a different story. There is 0% chance anyone would buy any 4-5 year old G85 for even $59.

        • +5

screen protectors for $59 online. silicone cases around $49

          Tell him he's dreaming!

Why would someone add over $100 to the cost of their $300 phone? You KNOW nobody is buying a 4-year-old budget android phone that hasn't had security updates in the last 2 years

          • @OZKap: Android don't get security updates even at 2-3 years old? What the? My dad's 9 year old iPhone 6S Plus was still getting security updates in 2024 once every few months. That can't be right.

            • @Dollar Dreamer: Motorola supports phones for 2-3 years, other manufacturers support for longer

            • @Dollar Dreamer: Different manufacturers support their phones for different lengths of time. Google committed this year (and Samsung followed suit) that their phones going forward will be getting 7 years of security updates, and (IIRC) at least 4 versions of Android.

Cheaper devices like the Nokia/HMD, Motorola etc might only get 3 years of security updates.

    • +2

      Nothing.
I've had my moto edge 30 fusion for over a year and have had zero of the claimed issues.
Before I got it, I was one of the curved screens are stupid brigade. Not anymore.

Supplied "soft" screen protector doing well. Don't even notice the curved edge when using.

E-sim, so this is a winner. Not for me as I also have a g54 for esim.

      • +1

I find soft screen protectors need to be replaced more often. I think I get about 3-6 months life out of them before the edges start peeling.

I don't know why someone neg you over your opinion.

        • +1

I'm using the first soft screen protector I applied to my pixel 6 when it was launched, its one of those slow "self healing" ones though.
For people that are rough on their phones, 100% agree the glass ones last longer

          • @reactor-au: Is the Pixel 6 curved?

I'm not rough with phones. Hell, my phone is even in a wallet style case at the moment. I've used plastic protectors on flat screens before without issue. The part of the protector over the curved screen slowly comes unstuck, though, maybe that is just the particular protector that I am using.

            • +1

@ihfree: P6 Pro, curved screen, soft screen protector.

    • It's 330 which is a bit expensive so we Nick pick

      • Why do we pick Nick?

        • +1

          Because he has nits.

  • +2

Not sure why they went with curved screen.

Even Samsung stopped doing curved screen on their latest flagship (S24).

As someone who has owned multiple curved screen phone in the past, it's a pain to find a decent and affordable tempered glass screen protector (usually have to go down the UV cured screen protector route).

  • +5

I bloody missed all the g84 deals. I hope at least one more deal comes along 🥲

    • Yes this +1

    • Yeah I'm holding out too!

      • why? Isn't the G85 better and newer?

        • +4

Main differences for me that the G85 has which I don't like:
          * Curved edges (I have them on my current phone and don't like them)
          * 128GB instead of 256GB. My current phone's storage is over 128GB used, so I'm predicting that 256GB is a better choice for me.

          • @thisisscotts: And the G85 has less RAM at 8GB while the G84 has 12GB.

  • Good people of OzB, if someone wanted a step up from the G54, e-sim, 4G compatible, non-curved phone…. What phone to go for?

    • Depends on price

      • $300-$400. Need 2x for my folks

        • +1

Nothing in that range currently. You need to give up the eSIM or the curve

        • +1

Honestly you are not getting much for that price. The best phone at that range is the a35 from Amaysim at $430. The g84 has a non-curved screen but no e-sim whilst the g85 has e-sim and a curved screen.

          • @NotReallyaMoneySaver: Ended up just grabbing 2 of the G85 with an OW price beat. As you said, not many options

            • @ASR-Briggs: Honestly I'd say go for the a35 if e-sim isn't mandatory. The g85 only gets one year OS updates so that's kinda arse. Not to mention the Samsung a35 has better cameras, more OS support (4yrs) and is just overall better. A little late now that you already purchased the g85.

              • @NotReallyaMoneySaver: "one major android OS upgrade and 3 years of bi-monthly security updates". That's really not that bad.

                • @ASR-Briggs: It's honestly horrible compared to the competition. It's around 3-5yrs for midrangers and up to 7yrs for flagships. But for the elderly, they won't be too affected by it.

                  • @NotReallyaMoneySaver: Well they're both 70+ :-P I was replacing them because most of their apps on their current phones won't even run anymore (OS too old).

Also, while the Exynos in the Sammy is a smidge faster than the Snapdragon 6s, from reviews it seems to be really hamstrung by the 6GB of ram. The Motorola has 8GB, plus a dynamic ram option to use an extra 8gb of internal storage as ram.

        • Does your-folks need eSIM, dual-sims-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15813030/redir

  • This or Edge 50 Fusion?
Is the 50 Fusion $130 better?

    • +1

Ive had the edge 50 fusion for over a month now and love it. It's the best phone I've ever had. Coming from a Samsung s21.

      • Do you use its camera app or gcamera app ?

        • Im not much of a photographer but the stock camera app has been fine for me. Good snaps in daylight of the family. Indoor with artificial lighting is fine too.

    • Nowadays we have so many options and the manufacturer producing phones with missing something or adding things, which at end of the day, the customer wants everything at best but with lessor price. I guess it will be depend on the priority, whether price, camera, weight, screen size, colour, processor, etc. It becomes harder to choose.

  • Anyone knows if we PB with OW by calling them and pay by Flybuys$, can we do that ? When order arrives at store, we go to store and pay with flybuys$$.

  • +1

No headphone jack but will a USB-C to 3.55m converters work?

    • +3

Yep, though typically with a 3.5mm jack.

    • Why wouldn't they work?

  • +1

I got this phone for my wife last week on the other G85 deal - $314 price match at JB.

Great phone for the money - it even has a 33W charger, which is a bit of a rarity these days.

    Recommended.

  • +2

What a step backward, 8GB down from 12GB ram from g84, 128gb down from 256gb and same snapdragon, reviews say no difference in this revision. G84 is a better phone.

    • I don't think the G85 is supposed to be a replacement for the G84. That would be the G86.

    • +1

The only thing going for it is the e-sim which is honestly sad

  • Still waiting for the G86

  • +1

I bought one of these in olive green from Amazon back in August. Paid $399 at the time and still think it's good value. Yes it's not as snappy as a Pixel or an iphone and while the camera also isn't as good as pixel/iPhone it does the job - you just can't pixel peep and expect to find greatness. I actually prefer the results with the native camera app rather than the gcam port. I'm using it right now to type this comment. No complaints and I'd recommend to anyone if it suits their budget.

  • +1

From my reading at Reddit, plenty of issue with camera lagging with Motorola phones and no support to update the software. I would wait until end of Oct to see if overseas phone such as X6 Pro will still be able to be used here.

    • Xiaomi Poco X6 Pro

      Total-price & year of purchase ?

Seems like a midrange-phone with peer such as Google-Pixel-7a
      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Xiaomi-Poco-X6-Pro-review-One-…

    • Would avoid China phones with 3g shutdown, a visiting family members X3 Pro stopped working last week even though it supports all bands except one Telstra band (amayasim/optus just say it's not supported)

      • X3 Pro stopped working…even though it supports all bands except one Telstra band

Hardware: missing one-Telstra-band hardware (min. spec) can get a device block.

Software: likely running lower OS-version: need iOS10 or Android 9 and above-> https://www.telstra.com.au/support/mobiles-devices/3g-closur….

Complex device indeed…not for the novice.
