PSA - Changes to Uber One Benefits

Just received the following via email:

Thank you for being an Uber One member. We are announcing some important updates to your Uber One benefits, effective 19 November, 2024.

We will continue with some of our most popular benefits*:
$0 Delivery Fee on eligible orders
5% Uber One credits on rides
Up to 30% off Service Fee on eligible orders
Uber One exclusive offers like discounted movie tickets and unlimited free popcorn refills at HOYTS

To ensure we can maintain these benefits, we’ll be making adjustments to the calculations of 5% Uber One credits on rides and Service Fee discounts (for more details see our FAQ page), and we will no longer offer members $5 Uber One credits for deliveries that arrive after the latest arrival estimate.

We appreciate your understanding and thank you for being part of our highly valued Uber One members community!

If you are not interested in continuing your membership, you can make changes in the Uber app or contact support.

What changes are we making to the calculation of the Uber One credits earned on rides and Service Fee discount on delivery orders for Uber One Members?

From the FAQ page:

Uber One credits will now be deducted from the price of the ride before the application of any promotions.

In addition, Uber One members were previously able to earn Uber One credits on the portion of the fare paid with Uber One credits. Starting 19 November 2024 (for existing members) and 18 October 2024 (for new members), you will still receive your 5% in Uber One credits on eligible rides, but you will no longer earn credits on the portion of the fare paid with Uber One credits.

Service Fee discount for Uber One Members was previously calculated based on the portion of the fare paid with Uber One credits. Starting 19 November 2024 (for existing members) and 18 October 2024 (for new members), you will still receive a Service Fee discount on eligible orders, but it will no longer apply to the portion of the fare paid with Uber One credits.

TLDR (thanks to ChatGPT)

Uber is updating its Uber One benefits starting November 19, 2024. Popular perks like $0 delivery fees, 5% credits on rides, and up to 30% off service fees will continue. However, changes include adjustments to how credits are calculated. You’ll no longer earn credits on the portion of a ride or delivery paid with Uber One credits, and the $5 credit for late deliveries is being removed.

Seems a good indication on how poor their delivery times have gotten, they can't even afford $5 when it's at least 20 minutes later than expected.

I gave up on all the delivery services a while ago, none use insulated bags to keep the food warm, never get an order without several stops on the way, it was always a poor experience. Even when I got the $5 it didn't really make up for a $50 delivered meal being cold and rubbish.

The business model is broken for fresh food that cools quickly. Drivers can't earn a livable income without combining orders and delivering to multiple locations on one trip. If you're at the end of their 50 minute trip, that's not Uber's problem.

It's time to give up on home deliveries, as you did.

I dunno, I delivered multiple pizzas at once back in the day and pizza cools very quickly with all that surface area. A well planned route, proper packaging (good boxes with a good pizza bag) and it always arrives piping hot.

I don't expect chips to stay crisp, but insulated storage and route management are solved problems. As for paying people properly, yeah, that's a problem uber hasn't tried to contend with.

Not sure if i'll bother paying once my 2 year trial ends

  • This seems extreme, almost a penalty.

UberEats advanced a service and because they can't deliver, you get cold food and pay the same…

    Pass.

…we will no longer offer members $5 Uber One credits for deliveries that arrive after the latest arrival estimate

Those "latest arrival estimates" were already huge so if they can't even stand by their own "estimates"… then wtf kind of service is this?

I'm curious.. has anyone worked out approximately how much one needs to spend each month on food alone to gain enough discounts to break even for the membership fee?

    Ridiculous.

If you can't meet your SLAs, then your client should be compensated for you not meeting them. And the way for you to meet those SLAs is by preventing your drivers from picking up multiple orders at once.

  • I’ve given up on food delivery as well.
    Always a problem.
