From engrossing thrillers to dark comedies, award-winning dramas and social satires, this expansive retrospective showcases a selection of Imamura’s thematically provocative and technically innovative films, spanning three decades of his illustrious career.

From 31 October – 3 November, 2024 ACMI in Melbourne will screen Imamura's films:

Who's funding this? Creative Victoria, ie. tax payers?

Creative Victoria doesn't usually provide support to dead foreign creators.

But if you scroll down you'll see:

"This FREE Special Series program is part of the Japanese Film Festival 2024 presented by The Japan Foundation, Sydney and made possible by The Japan Foundation Film Library."

and if you google to see who the hell the Japan Foundation Film Library is you'll see:

"The Japan Foundation is Japan’s only institution dedicated to carrying out comprehensive cultural exchange programs throughout the world."

and if you go to their annual report it states that for 2022-2023, on page 32, it receives 'Government Subsidies for operating expenses.

So yes, tax payers. But not Victorian ones. Phew.

I don't know if it's obvious, but I'm procrastinating. And was curious myself.

    • If you bothered to do a basic search…
The Japan Foundation is funded by Japanese business, Japanese government grants & other donations.
Provides a Japanese cultural exchange in many countries.

It has been providing their copies of films to be shown free during the Japanese Film Festival around Australia for many years.
More recent JFF films shown in cinemas are not free.
Free online films etc at other times.

Canberra (6 Films) was last month.
Brisbane (10 Films) finishes today. Sydney (6 Films) starts today.
      Then Melbourne.

      Enjoyed these films in Brisbane👍

Of course any event at a Govt funded facility will incur some cost to Taxpayers.
Just walking into a gallery etc, you are costing money in staff & operating costs, facilities maintenance, etc.
Better close down everything to save Taxpayers! No culture for you😝

Hating on the arts industry as a waste of tax payer money, a tale as old as time…

The arts industry (and unpopular sports) leeching of tax payer money, a tale as old as time…
