½ Price: Philadelphia Cream Cheese Block 250g Selected Varieties $2.85 @ IGA (Participating Stores Only, Excl. TAS, NT)

230

Finally some cheap Philly cheese.

Sale starts tomorrow at what looks like participating IGAs (and excluding all IGAs in TAS and NT).

Stock up now for Christmas cheesecakes/desserts/sushi. They usually have a great shelf life.

Aside - I've been using homebrand in the meantime (have found IGA black and gold (nonspreadable but in tubs) the cheapest alternative and least annoying to unwrap), all recipes always recommend philly as being the gold standard, but does anyone actually notice a legit difference?

The catalogue shows $4.95 each on page 7!

    • Shucks, didnt check enough stores :( dunno why that price would even be catalogue worthy for the spreadable tubs :S

    • Not listed as ½ Price but $4.95
250g tubs - selected varieties spreadable

Catalog offers depend on chain of IGA & store type

  • Please include more details, e.g., block or tub, original or other flavours?

If there is a half off sale, it must be for the block.

Both my local IGA stores in western Sydney showing as half price at $2.85. I would think this would be across the board but to be sure go to their website and look for the catalogue then put in your postcode and see your local stores weekly specials. For me its page 4 top right.

Coles and Woolies never have this half price any more and IGA only do it once or maybe twice a year although sometimes after an IGA sale like this, sometimes one or both may follow suit but I would not bank on it.

As an alternative I have been using Woolworths 'light' "Spreadable" cream cheese for all my baked and unbaked (Biscoff) cheesecakes and it has been working really well.

I was surprised but glad as the spreadable is cheaper ($2.90 for 250 gram tub = $11.60kg) compared to their own 225 gram block at $3.00 (=$13.33kg).
OP mentions Black and Gold tubs which are cheaper again at $2.69 for a 250 gram tub (= $10.80 kg).

At $2.85 for a 250 gram block, the Philly comes in at $11.40kg so definitely a great buy if you specifically want Philly or the block form.

Thanks @Embaloo for posting this and your comments. :-)

    • Good to know about not seeing it at coles and woolies anymore, I thought it had been a while! :( Thank you!!
Yes I feel that cheesecake recipes probably mask differences between the brands - I don't often use it outside of baking.
Definitely worth doing the /kg calculations, thanks!
What recipe do you use for your biscoff cheesecakes?

      • I usually use Philly but last time used Coles brand block cream cheese and could not tell the difference in a Basque Cheesecake (baked).

      • I usually use the one here: https://thebigmansworld.com/biscoff-cheesecake/

I have converted the cups into grams (in brackets below) and usually round down from that so I use either 500g cream cheese or 250 grams if i make a smaller cake or individual servings. I just use thickened cream and either 300mls or 150mls. You can play around until you get the consistency you like, With this recipe you beat the cream into the mix which is easier than some others where you whip it separately and fold in.
I often make a half batch into put the crumbs and filling mix into the tubs the Woolies spreadable cream cheese comes in then put the lid on and freeze. Ready to go individual serves when I want. Better portion control for me or I would probably eat the whole thing in one serve. LOL. :-)))

        FOR THE CRUST
250 gram package Biscoff cookies crushed
        6 tablespoons butter (85 grams)

        FOR THE FILLING
2 1/2 cups cream cheese softened (562 grams)
1/4 cup superfine sugar (50 grams)
        1 cup Biscoff spread smooth (254 - 295 grams)
        1 1/4 cups heavy cream (336 grams)

        FOR THE FROSTING
        - 1/2 cup Biscoff spread melted (148 grams)
        - 1/4 cup Biscoff cookies crushed (28 grams)

I didn't see it on the catalogue, which doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't on there. Searching for products on the website with my closest Click & Collect store (Fairfield, Vic) selected confirmed the blocks are half price.

Thanks OP, a long awaited bargain!

Thanks so much! First time eating these and they're so addictive. Best believe I'm grabbing a few more blocks at work tomorrow :)
