Ergonomic WFH Office Chair - Oct 2024 (Budget $800)

Hi all, I am about to throw my Krost office chair which served me well for 3-4 years. My shoulders and hamstrings are killing me working 8-9 hours a day from home. My budget is between $310-$800

Yesterday I went to Cosco and came across the “ Ergoking Martin Mesh Ergonomic Chair”. It felt so good and the price was very reasonable. However, it doesn’t have good reviews. Apparently, the mesh gets saggy after few months. $310 delivered.

I’m also looking at Ergohuman v2 is there a good deal out there? Is it worth taking the leg rest?

Could you guys please recommend me something?

The arms 5D, lower back support, headrest is a must.

Sihoo with leg rest looks good too.

doesn't costco have really good return policy? if after a few months you can always return it

    • Yes they do. But the problem is packing up again, dismantling and carrying that back to Cosco. My car won’t fit this chair.

  • Ergohuman you could probably find

  • +1

It's like buying a mattress, you need to find something comfortable for you, go check it out yourself, and if it fits and feels comfortable, buy it,

    • Indeed bums come in all shapes and sizes

    • +2

Yeah I bought an office chair recommended here and it ended up out on sidewalk for collection.

(I use a wooden kitchen chair now, which is much better.)

That mistake has really burned my chances of getting a Herman Miller purchase approved.

  • On a good day you'll find a pre-owned Herman Miller Aeron in budget, or Steelcase Leap or other Herman Miller model

    • I’ve got OCD and don’t want to buy preowned chairs. People do have bad habits and do what not on them.

      • The pellicle mesh seat base is easily cleaned & sanitised if that's any help. A new Aeron with arms retails for $3,320

  • I took the risk with an Ergotune Supreme which I've had for almost two years now. Extremely happy with it, just be wary the lumbar support is aggressive. Sat on a Herman Miller Aeron and Ergohuman and TBH they don't come close in terms of comfort and adjust-ability, plus I love the headrest on the Ergotune. I'd probably only ever upgrade to an Embody or one of Ergotune's newer models.

Just searched online Ergotune looks amazing. Where did you order it in and how much was it?
It’s showing as $719 plus extra for delivery. I’m 171cm short - is M size for me?
      https://au.ergotune.com/products/ergotune-supreme

      • I ordered direct from their website, it took a week or two to arrive to me in Brisbane. I'm 178cm and I ordered M, all it changes is the height adjust/gas cylinder size I believe. I think the Joobie has a few quality of life updates so I would go with that one if I had a choice right now but either way you can't go wrong! Just watch videos on YouTube to be certain it's what you're after.

I've also got my fat arse in an Ergotune. Best chair I've had the privilege of sitting in.
Looks like I got it Black Friday from Amazon:
        Order placed
        28 November 2022
        Total
        $601.00

    • Do you think it's worth going for the Vesby model? I'm thinking that or the Ergo Human Elite V2.

      • I'm contemplating giving mine to my partner and getting the Vesby as it has some good QOL updates over the Supreme. I tried out the Ergohuman and I found it uncomfortable. The mesh doesn't compare to the Ergotune's and overall it feels cheaper.

How tall you are really defines the best chair. YouTube reviews are also your friend.

A lot of highly reviewed chairs aren’t great for tall people.

    • I’m short around 171cm. Skinny butt

  • I have a current steelcase leap but found the series 2 just as comfy (lightly less adjustability)
series 2 often have a 25-30% promo (im sure they will for BF) and that will bring it to the $800-$850 mark.

    • Could you please share the link? When is BF coming up?

  • My budget is between $310-$800

Disregard your budget and buy an Aeron.

My shoulders and hamstrings are killing me working 8-9 hours a day from home.

Don't be a cheapskate. It is a difficult mental challenge to accept to pay $xxxx for a chair. It took me a very, very long time to overcome this myself. But I suggest you overcome it as well.

I used to be in pain and couldn't even sit for long periods of time without increasing pain. Now with Aeron, I can sit all day long.

Fundamentally it distributes your body weight in to other areas of the body rather than the lower back, unlike almost every other chair on the market.

Also if you plan to live in Australia for the next 10-20 years, think about how much per hour you will pay to sit on the Aeron. It will be cheap over time. And if you don't buy the Aeron, you will probably buy multiple cheaper chairs that end up in the bin.

    • What’s the price of this? Where can I find the best deal? Just want to do some research.

Does Herman Miller Aeron Chair allows armrest movement or gets stuck with the table?
How come it doesn’t have a headrest? The lumber support seems plastic and with all that how is it all that good and expensive?

      • Aeron arms swivel and are height adjustable. Your body dimensions may suit a size A. Headrest is optional as it's an office chair, not designed for gaming. Per @watwatwat, Aerons pretty much last forever as they're so highly repairable. I'd love to upgrade to a Remastered but I can't imagine my current one ever failing.

      • Armrests can be modified in a lot of ways. I adjust mine so they are low enough to just get underneath my table and then I recline.

The chair is designed so that you are almost always in a state of recline and how is how it distributes weight away from your back.

The lumber support seems plastic and with all that how is it all that good and expensive?

Clearly there are different grades of "plastic". The components are all super high quality and long life. The chair has a 12 year warranty so if you don't believe it, then get something replaced for free if it breaks.

For the headrest, I googled it for you:

Herman Miller's Aeron chair doesn't come with a headrest because the chair is designed to support the spine without one. The chair's PostureFit feature supports the sacral region of the spine, which helps to align the spine and pelvis. Herman Miller also believes that headrests can be difficult to fit correctly because of the variation in people's head and neck shapes, heights, and depths.

However, headrests are available for purchase from Engineered Now for the Aeron Classic and Aeron Remastered models. The H3 headrest is designed for people under 5'11" (180 cm), while the H4 headrest is 20% larger and is better suited for people who are 5'11" or taller.
While headrests can provide support for the head and neck, they may not be suitable for everyone. Some people may find that a headrest interferes with their desk movements or doesn't fit their shape and height.

I bought an aeron a few months ago, it's comfortable enough but definitely not the most comfortable, you really have to sit properly for it to be comfortable; no slumping or slouching or anything of the sort, legs straight, feet flat, etc. It's a real work chair and I actually prefer my old officeworks chair sometimes.

      • Maybe you don't actually mean "legs straight" and "feet flat" literally. Maybe you want to place one leg across the seat and half sit on it, and you want to cross your legs and have your legs and feet up on the chair, or some other position. That is indeed is not possible. The chair is designed to be in a state of recline and indeed does force you in to a certain posture, which for most is going to be a good thing and is done on purpose.

        definitely not the most comfortable

It's not fluffy material or cosmetically cosy to the touch. Once you move to a new chair, it can take weeks/months to adjust to it.

OP said "My shoulders and hamstrings are killing me working 8-9 hours a day from home". So I don't think they are going to care about the lack of fluffiness. The chair should fix fundamental pain in the body, which is a greater gain.

Once you sit in the chair for months and years, I believe most people will not consciously think about the chair any more and will become used to it.

Ergohuman 2 Ultra Leather Mesh Combo, I am so glad I bought it over wasting money with cheaper chair.
It not just looks expensive and premium, it feels like a premium chair and my neck pain ( 1.88 ) is gone.
    I paid $700, it is $770 now.

I work from home 4 days a week.

    Do not buy cheaper chair!!!!
If I put together all the chairs I bought before, I could have bought this chair instead.

IMPORTANT: Get the Rollerblade wheels, forget about the norma ugly wheels that die on you and sh1t.
The main reason I got it other than recommendation was folks having the same chair for 5-10y and the chair still like new, It is not hard to understand why now that I have it.

    https://www.ergohuman.com.au/ergonomic-office-chairs/ergohum…

Last but not least, invest into a standing desk to allow your shoulder, arm and all to have a proper position.
Avoid buying bloody IKEA or spending $1500 into one.
I buit one myself, a decent dual motor ( must be ) standing desk frame from RetailD Display Direct and a IDÅSEN 160x80, everything cost me ~$500
Anything remotely close to that was either cheap and crappy or ~$1000

    • Thank you mate. I have a standing desk which I’m happy with.
With the Ergohuman 2 what’s the difference between the leather mesh and others?

I’m looking for legrest does ErgoHuman 2 got a legrest?

I’m very tempted to go with this?

      https://www.ergohuman.com.au/ergonomic-office-chairs/ergohum…

      • @justanick

With the Ergohuman 2 what’s the difference between the leather mesh and others?

The one I mentioned has mesh for the back and everything else but the seat is leather.
It is more comfortable than a mesh seat, this was also recommendation and I am happy with it.

Mine does not have leg-rest, I have these "Under Desk Footrest" to give your leg some support: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09X1RQSPL
That built-in leg-rest would drive me nuts trying to move around with that thing sticking out haha

        • Thanks mate. Leather seat definitely a pro. Did you try the mesh seat and then the leather seat? The leather seat is it like a thin piece or thick leather for comfort?

I have very skinny butt not much flesh. Leather could be better for me.

I needed the leg rest for leg rest as I have a foot rest.

Lastly, do you mind checking the ETA for this chair in Sydney city let’s say NSW 2205? I can’t see the shipping ETA as I need this like asap. My back is killing me and I still need to work.

    • I got an ErgoHuman recently (slightly different version to you). The chair is ok, but I find it doesn't stay adjusted the way I like it. For example, if I slouch slightly the chair back will slip down. It really needs something to lock it in place.

I also feel the seat depth isn't adequate for someone my height (about 189cm).

It's all personal so not trying to say you're wrong, but just adding an extra perspective.

      • @CaptainJack I'm 1.88 and the one I shared allows you to fully adjust the chair.
The seat can be moved all the way back to all the way to the front.

I'm yet to find something on it that is annoying me or doesn't allow me to adjust.
As a plus, its design doesn't encourage my cats to destroy a $700 chair lol

        • Yeah the seat moves forward and back, but really needs to go further at my height/proportions.

This is just silly, you can’t get chair recommendations from strangers. Everybody’s body is different, and the way people sit and work varies too.

You need to try chairs for yourself, and unfortunately you can’t really tell whether it’s going to be good for your body long term until you’ve tried it for a few days or even a few weeks. Some chairs are super comfortable at first, then a few weeks later you’ve got debilitating back pain. Generally though, firm is better than soft, leaning back is better than leaning forwards, and lumbar support is essential, although this can be improved with cushions. A crappy soft seat pan cannot be improved with cushions though, and personally I avoid those chairs with a seat that’s curved to fit your bum. Flat seat is better for me. A seat with adjustable angle that can be adjusted to lean either forwards or backwards is important in my opinion.

I don’t agree with anyone who makes generalisations like “avoid IKEA” or something similar. All the chairs are different, you just want one that suits your body. I personally use an IKEA chair, which has been perfect for me for the last 6 years, but most of the chairs in IKEA probably don’t suit me. My super-expensive work chair did not suit me, despite being tailored to my body.

    • Oh yes, go and try out different chairs for a few weeks at a time. That's very easy to do.

Humans are so different; some people have 3 hands and some only have 1 hand, some have 4 legs and some people have no legs, so it is important to have a uniquely designed chair for everyone.

      • Oh yes, go and try out different chairs for a few weeks at a time. That's very easy to do.

You're right, and this is the problem. And this would explain why there are so many 2nd hand office chairs selling on Marketplace in near new condition.

You just don't know until you've tried a chair for a few days.

Humans are so different; some people have 3 hands and some only have 1 hand, some have 4 legs and some people have no legs, so it is important to have a uniquely designed chair for everyone.

It doesn't have to be uniquely designed. You just have to find a chair that suits you.

Anatomy (dimensions) vary enough to make it difficult to find a chair that suits everyone. It is not uncommon for a ~185 cm man to be twice the weight of a ~160cm woman. My uncle is huge and overweight, and sits in this enormous gaming chair with a long seat pan. Nobody else likes this chair. When I sit in it I get an instant sore back. Conversely, he cannot sit in the chairs that I like. At my work, people were always swapping chairs, or getting custom-made chairs.

  • I don't have this chair myself but 2 seperate Osteo's have recommended the Anotome Richmond, link below.

    https://backcare.com.au/anatome-richmond

  • I went to Cosco again today the mesh chair was so good. I got a foam seat at the moment never tried a mesh seat. My only issue is the cheaper Cosco chair might sag eventually.

I’m leaning more towards Ergo Human 2 with foot rest. Their website is bad. Doesn’t really show ETA etc.

I’m yet to find out the difference between the two chairs as above.

    • +1

You can get ergo human from places like temple and Webster who will show ETA and that you're of information. I have had a ergo human v2 leather for around three years and it turned out to be a nice chair.

A couple of workplaces have had the Herman miller with mesh which are also good chairs but the mesh is a bit on the utilitarian side. One workplace had ones with a fabric base and it was a revolting experience seeing how some people pretty much wiped their greasy hands and fingers on the sides instead of walking to the bathroom and washing them. The black fabric had this awful cream/grey build up of crud.

  • Temple and Webster doesn’t seem to have the Ergohuman 2 Ultra leather. In fact there are no Ergohuman 2 advertised.

I’m really confused at the moment between Ergotune Joobie vs Ergohuman 2 Ultra leather mesh.

Please note I have skinny bum and need butt support.

  • Went to Harvey's & tried out the Arlington chair. Best chair I've sat in for awhile. Got them down to $450, until the end of Oct.

Guys after lots of thoughts I pulled the trigger on ERGOHUMAN Elite mesh with leg rest.

I was going to go for the leather seat Ultra but after chatting with their online support I was told Elite has more technology inside more robust and the leather seat has mesh then on top of it foam and a thin layer on leather. I have a thin foam which I throw in if I feel uncomfortable.

Please post your results/experience in a few months.

I know someone who has one of these who puts a pillow at the back of it because they still get back pain from it.
