Frequent Flyer Points - What Do People Buy Them for?

I apologize if this is common knowledge but I don't think I understand. I see lot of classifieds on selling frequent flyer points.

Does it workout cheaper to book flight tickets with the points? It doesn't seem so or at least there doesn't seem to plenty of options to book. I'm probably missing something.

    Just made a five stopover Economy award booking last week for travel in May/Jun 2025: BNE/HNL/LAS/MCO/LGA JFK/FCO MXP/LHR 117,000 points + $292.79

    • This comment is a fun guessing game of name the airport.

MCO FCO and MXP got me stumped.

      • I omitted the transits via NAN, PHX & DCA

      • MCO = Orlando
        FCO = I think Rome
        MXP not sure on

      • MXP is Milpensa. I believe it's the second biggest airport in Italy, just outside Milano.

    • If paid for in cash: $4,150

Can use them to upgrade to business

Although not as lucrative as it used to be and don't believe anyone saying it's straight forward.

I understand upgrades with points may be redeemed by Platinum One, Platinum, Gold, Silver then Bronze paying full economy. Needless to say I've always been wholly unworthy.

Should get rid of that rubbish from the classifieds. Didn’t know fraudulent activities on FF accounts was allowed/encouraged on this site.

    • I hope you don’t jaywalk or take more than your fair share of toilet paper from public toilets.

    • Against t&c yes…
      Fraudulent 🤔

Well in most cases the transferrer needs to nominate the transferee as a specific type of (approved) family member, and I doubt many of the transactions are made by people who are directly related.

          Six degrees..you never know…

          • @randomusername2017: For Qantas at least, the approved types of family member are only one (or two) degrees away, fourth cousins twice removed don't count.

    • Just to be clear I'm not questioning the genunity of the transactions. Just interested in understanding the use cases of people buying these points.

  • Not for personal use…. 🤣🤣

It would probably depend on the flight, but it would generally work out cheaper if classic rewards are available.

A route I travel regularly is Perth to Canberra, Qantas is the only (regular) direct flight. Standard price is $551 or 18,000 points + $72 (classic reward). Buying 18,000 points @1.4c/point = $252, + $72 in taxes and you’re paying $324 instead of $551.

Outside school hols, Syd or Mel or ADL to Perth is regularly on sale at around $130.

Grill’d does 2 for 1 meat free burgers on Mondays.

  • Thank you! That makes sense

Flights I could never afford / justify to pay the normal price for. I have used them to fly Emirates and Cathay business class a few times.

Next year my husband and I are flying Emirates First Class from Melbourne to USA, then Fiji Business Class on the way back. Never could afford that if paying cash.

Also use them to book shorter flights - Perth to Bali and Perth to Melbourne etc. It makes the trip very inexpensive.

I haven’t bought points off others - I’m not that trusting! But would be an option if was I was short on points and wanted a cheaper and quicker way of buying them. I usually just buy Qantas wine if I need a quick top up.

I had previously bought QF and VFF in the past. But few years ago, Velocity did an audit on me. It seems the person I bought it from was a regular seller and I got tainted because of it. I lost all my VFF points that I had. Never again.

    • Yep buying and selling points is against the t&cs

    • Velocity seems to give a shit whilst Qantas doesn’t. I had my Velocity account suspended for 6 months because I transferred 8,000 odd points to a friend.
