Warmest Quilt That You’ve Used

I know summer is coming but I seem to be seeing clearances for winter quilts.

When I stayed at my friend's place in England, they had a Primark 15 tog quilt (tog is a UK measurement of how warm things are) and I’ve never felt so warm in my life.

I have the warmest rated Ikea quilt (down feather) but does nothing for the Aussie winter. I’ve stayed in some Airbnb’s that provide wool quilts and they’re really quite variable.

I saw a 15 tog rated quilt off Amazon UK $100 shipped to Australia seems to be ok but wanted to know if there are local products that you could recommend (Australia uses gsm) and I’m seeing some discounted 500gsm quilts would be enough for me. For reference, my room temperature drops to 15 degrees at the thick of winter. (Would be a separate discussion as I’ve tried all the weatherproofing but bedroom is south facing and gets very little sunlight)

  • A staffy. They make great cuddle buddies and more than happy to be under the doona.

If you’re not careful you’re gonna trigger the cowards and dumbasses that think staffies are pitties with that kind of talk…

When I had a dog he wasn’t allowed on the bed, except at the hunting shack where it could get to below zero inside in winter. It was just as much for him as me though as he would shiver all night long even with multiple blankets and extra food.

What sort of demon wouldn't want to cuddle up to this?

          lol, that’s awesome.

  • Or a dachshund or two, if you want something smaller. Just don't let them jump off the bed as it can hurt their back.

Go multiple layers, then you can add/remove as needed.

Also it drops to 15 degrees and a normal quilt doesn't keep you warm? I'd suggest a hot water bottle, as it sounds like your body doesn't generate any heat.

    • Absolutely, go with layers… unless you sleep outdoors.

Cotton waffle blanket doubled over and 100% wool blanket doubled over is all I use in Melbourne winters. If it’s a rare sub-zero outside night I might add an additional cheap dooner on top but that is very rare.

  • When I was growing up we used Downia down quilts. But the maintenance is a pita. Moved onto wool, equal pain. Now I just have cheap poly quilts and use old school wool blankets in winter with flanny sheets. After 40 years, you really dont want to be too hot anyway.

  • FWIW I have one similar to this and it's too hot for me to use (in Melbourne) https://www.amazon.it/Bassetti-Trapunta-Matrimoniale-Granfou…, however my heating works properly, so it might suit you if you can get that shipped here.

      • 17 this morning in kitchen/family where thermometer hangs. I slept mainly with a sheet, quilt covering legs.
It was mid 20s here yesterday

  • Wool ones are generally warmer. I don’t like the way they drape though I prefer ones that almost mould to my body.
