BIGBOLDBURLY

"Big, bold, burly", 93pt Shiraz at $9.17 per bottle delivered, that you can drink now or cellar for 8 years.

Wine Pilot: "South Aussie Shiraz which spent eight months maturing in older French oak hogsheads. Under Diam, as are all in this collection.
A deep purple, magenta colour here, this is powerfully aromatic. This is a concentrated and slightly earthy style of Shiraz. Big and bold with black fruit notes, chocolate, bay leaves and beefstock. As we move to the palate, the flavours of sweet mocha, coffee beans and dark chocolate move to the fore. There is good focus and intensity and the wine offers firm tannins with good length. It is one for enjoying now and for the next eight years. Really good value, especially if you enjoy the bigger, bolder and more burly style of Shiraz. 93."

  • Curious why they have used cork? Most winemakers these days use screwcaps. Is this on purpose so I have to drink the whole bottle ;)

    Anyone comment on this wine?

    • +2

@Aussybob Correct - around 86% of wine in Australia is sealed under screwcap because of historic issues around the supply of inferior cork to the market decades ago. Australia was at the forefront of developing screwcaps as far back as the 1940s.

That said, cork is king in most markets such as the US (though screwcap acceptance is increasing) and most markets where there has been a significant influenece from European producers such as France particularly (for example Vietnam, a former French colony).

Given most Australian winemakers export to some degree, there'll always be some wines sealed under cork and some under screwcap. It's one of the great debates with winemakers but as with any topic it is a nuanced argument.

Hope that helps! Cheers! RD :-)

      • Thanks for the informative response!

  • Thanks for the deal. At under $10 a bottle, willing to give them a shot :) ordered.

    • Enjoy @urzu! Certainly worth a punt! :-)

  • I am curious with the cost of hiring Australian labour to grow the grapes, manufacturing, electricity, storage, tax and the final bottling and delivery and you are selling them for less than $10 a bottle.

Is there money to be made? My basic maths don't add up.

    • Fortunately a finance background, so don’t worry, it’s not beans on toast at Tipsy Hill just yet! :-))

  • Thanks RD. Good reviews and feedback from the previous posts. Gave it a try! :)
