Ubiquiti Unifi Pro 48-Port Switch $549 + Delivery ($0 with Account/C&C/ in-Store) + Surcharge @ Centre Com

120

Was searching for a Unifi switch and came across this, lowest ~$700-ish elsewhere. Note that this is the Pro version (added some L3 features), 4x 10G SFP+ ports are nice for uplink, connecting NAS/Server. Could not justify this for home due to no PoE, the only use case I can imagine is for a medium office.

Surcharges: 1.2% Card & PayPal, 2% AmEx. 0 for Bank transfer & afterpay & zip
Free shipping excludes WA, NT & remote areas.

  • How about some of their 16 ports… ?

    • How about some G5 Turret Ultras. Sob :-(

    48 ports and they're all 1Gb 🤷🏼‍♂️

It's like Ubiquiti are allergic to 2.5Gb…

    • +3

Ubiquiti have other switches with 2.5GbE. You will need to bring lots of cash though.

    • Yeah man, for that (or RGB) you need to go to their Pro Max range 😂 very Apple like.
Honestly just a few 2.5GbE ports would have been nice.

and you are using 2.5GB ports to do what? they have 4 x 10G SFP+ ports as 2.5Gb is not a amazing technology

      • USB 2.5GbE adapters are cheap for an extra kick on existing wiring, or getting higher-spec APs to function.

Indeed for 48-port it would be either all 2.5Gb or all 1Gb. A few 2.5Gb is kind of pointless, especially on non-PoE model.

      • You need to buy expensive transceivers to plug your 10Gb Copper gear into an SFP+ port, and these ports don't support 2.5Gb or 5Gb transceivers so you'll still only get 1Gb from your 2.5Gb gear.

bummer no PoE. would def pull the trigger for that

    • Pro-24-PoE is already doubling the price Pro-48. PoE are expensive.

Probably because nobody is buying Pro-48 so they're dumping the stock.

Not in the same league but I got a 48 port Juniper with POE on all ports + 10 SFP+ for $130 used off eBay.

      • This is the way. Even brocade/ruckus enterprise switches can be had for cheap.

      • 48 port Juniper with POE on all ports

        Just vanilla PoE (802.3af) or PoE+ (802.3at)?

        • Poe+ with a 740W power budget

          • @galtaforce: That is one sweet deal. I am starting to feel jealous with my TP-Link 253W power budget PoE+ switch.
I assume this is a managed switch, too?

            • @DoctorCalculon: Yeah EOL though, no more software updates. Had to swap out the loud fans for Noctuas and provide some external air circulation. Most of the functionality works fine without a license. JunOS command line interface.

      • I hope you meant the UniFi switch is not in the same league lol. The Juniper switch if it's an EX running JUNOS is serious enterprise kit meant for stability and long-life.

Unfortunately though it'll likely be loud and power hungry.

        • +1

Yep. It is both of those things but near silent with a Noctua fan swap. I'm not pushing the PoE budget to its limit.

          • +1

@galtaforce: Modded.. nice!! I really liked JUNOS even though I mostly use Cisco and Aruba.

  • Yea agree. Prefer 2.5g.

  • What would be the best for a small house with the need of maybe 8-16 ports and some PoE

I have a UDM which is cool and has the built in AP and 2 PoE but where it is the AP is kind hundered because it’s in the rack with my NAS’ etc.

    Any suggestions?

    • Depends on the size and config of your house.

My ~230m2 house is serviced by a single U6 Pro WiFi AP mounted roughly in the middle on the ceiling and a bunch of CAT6 cabling. But your house and usage might be different to mine. The U7 line of APs is out now too.

You can also test out what you might need with the Ubiquiti Designer https://design.ui.com/ by drawing a house plan and throwing some wifi equipment on there to see a heat map - it’s a great tool

As far as 16 port switches go, either the USW-LITE-16 POE or the USW-16-POE if you need something rack-mountable (& want to spend more $$). Both have 16 ports, but only 8 POE ports. There’s also the 24-port switches if you need more physical ports.

You’ll need to ensure you understand what POE devices you want to power and make sure the total power requirements of them doesn’t exceed the power budget on the switch (use the Google to see switch specs) - otherwise you’ll have poe issues and/or need to invest in a few POE injectors for some devices.

I recently picked up some Ubiquiti switching gear from the Woolies Marketplace (via the reseller ‘Wireless1) with 30% cashback recently courtesy of OzB.
