nice price.. if only i needed it hehe

    • Yeh, need vs lust. This is only about 20% slower than the 7900X, but it's about 40% cheaper, so if you're still on AM4, then it's the best bang/buck upgrade.

Bought one. Planning to slot this into my cheapo Asus Prime B450M-A mobo to replace the 3600 I bought for $340 back in 2021.

      Don’t forget to update bios

      • if i have a 5600x on my b550 . i wouldn't need to update my bios ye (if i got this 5900x)

        • Negative capitan

        • +1

you should always be updating your bios anyway, the updates include important security patches

  • Does the 12 cores split across two chiplets matter much?

Depends on your use case - for highly latency sensitive things (like 1080p gaming) then possibly, and you'd be better off with a 5700X3d/5800X3d anyway.

For productivity tasks (ie where you're going to hammer multiple cores), then not so much.

These chips have 64M L3 cache (32M per CCD), so even productivity tasks that utilise say 8 cores will sometimes run faster than than an 8 core single CCD with 32M cache (it depends on how much inter-thread communication there is).

      • Ok thanks, that helps. I've been poking a stick at CPU upgrades from a 3600 (paired with a RTX3070) for 1440p casual gaming (usually not AAA brand new titles) and DAW work. Given that I'm on 1440p and single core performance is most important for DAW work, I'm thinking a 5600x could be ideal. I doubt my use case will change in the next couple of years.

  • Man, I was just putting together a server with the 5700x I bought from the last deal. So tempting, I am swimming in AMD CPU’s right now…

    • Same here. I upgraded to 5700X about 18 months ago, and this is dirt cheap.

On the other hand my motherboard (X370 Taichi) is now 7+ years old, so I don't want to throw more money at an old platform. And if the motherboard dies at some point, I'd have to either buy another one (AM4 is not that cheap anymore), or toss the chip.

      • There are some super cheap am4 boards still like a320’s and b450’s and some $100’s b550’s. Depending on what you are doing, could be much better than tossing the chip out.

Do what I do and spend 10 times the amount of the chip to put together a server and what not to justify the cheap cpu deal! 😂

    • I wonder what the diff in elec cost this does as it is a 105W part or something…

  • I wonder if I should get this or 5700x3d for $300 on Amazon atm.

    Upgrading from a 3600.

Yeah, 5700x3d has a bigger cache and should do better for gaming which is my main use. But the 5900x seems loaded for productivity and still shouldn't do as bad for gaming given it has 64MB for L3 cache.

And it's also about $20 more. Hard to say.

    • Hmm guess they both have 105W TDP

    • What price they on aliex?

      • For the 5700x3d about $220~ with coupons. But I also hear how you might have troubles with cpus not working on aliexpress and maybe it's worth spending $80 more to buy it from Amazon.

    • 5700X3D is better value for gaming purposes.

  • Did they fix the 6+6 two ccd latency issue compared to the x3d chips?

    • That isn't something that can be fixed

  • If anyone is upgrading or has upgraded to an r9 I'd buy your r7 :)

  • Can someone recommend a good motherboard, I'm running i7 7th gen getting to old. This is good price for upgrade, but I'm not familiar withe Ryzen systems.

Also, is this a good upgrade? I don't mind spending around $500 for an upgrade, but this looks like a really good deal?

Doubtful you will be able to use 12 cores effectively if your current CPU is sufficient. Why not go for the 7600x? In real world use it will actually be more powerful.

      • It's actually not running well tbh ahah that's why I want to upgrade, most AAA games struggle to render. Also, I think my 3070 is bottlenecking with 7700k.

        • It likely is a bottleneck.

The 7600x is close to 20% faster per core than the 5900x. That means you need to be using more than 8 cores for the 5900x to give you better performance.

that's the thing annoyingly there isn't great pricing on am4 mobos
