Might help if you update your post to include this!

    • Coming up as 424 for me

      • +1

May be only for prime members.

        • correct, it's marked "prime big deal"

    • +4

The one posted here is solar. This one is not. Just a FYI.

      • -1

It says 2s from the link

        • +4

2S is the size in this case.

          • @Wonderfool: Ahh righto. I bought the jb deal a while back $178 for instinct 2 non solar but neon yellow colour, still going strong.

            • @designate: Have regrets of not picking it up at that price! :(

    • Fk I got the solar wish I waited til prime day. Oh well

    Ordered, awesome find

  • So exposed it under sun, it charges?

    • +3

yep… but slowly. 30 day battery life without solar. and if your out in the sun enough they say 51 days… I will have to put it to the test….

dc rainmaker says 3 hours of 50,000 lux = 1 hour of gps time or 1 day of smart watch time….

      • And normal (vs S) is unlimited for smartwatch.

  • can this play music without a phone?

    • i dont think so but it has music control from your phone

  • My old Garmin FR645 is on the way out, but somehow this does not feel like an upgrade. What about Amazfit Balance for $313.65?

    • -1

amazfit is good if you dont use it for sports.

      • Can I ask what's the issue with using it for sport? It seems to strike a good balance between being a full-featured smart watch whilst also having good health metrics and activity tracking. I haven't ever owned a watch and am looking at getting an amazfit as my first one

    • Yeah I get it because it’s not a color screen…. The hr sensor is upgraded and it has a lot of software updates like training readiness and health snapshot morning report…. I think software wise it will feel like an upgrade but the screen feels like a old school Casio… I bought this for my son… so for me this is more of a logical buy instead of an emotional buy…

    • -3

2s is very old. good for the poor or someone just wants to have a new toy to try…. that amazfit balance looks great and can go perfectly well with a suit.

    • not feel like upgrade

      Because of monochrome?

      Pro review here: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2022/02/garmin-instinct2-review.…

Is Garmin stats important to you, then I'd stick with Garmin ecosystem? Maybe another one but none at this price point.

      • The thing is there's no need to stick to a single ecosystem. Most watches sync to Strava which is the only indicator that "a run/ride happened", and I hardly use Garmin Connect.

The reason of bringing up Amazfit Balance is, although I do run 6-7 hours a week and want all the running metrics (which I believe Garmin excels), I'm still wearing the watch in the other 137 hours in a week and would appreciate the other smartwatch features (which Instinct 2S might be lacking).

        • I see, depends on your needs.

For me, it's the general health tracking including VO2 Max estimate. And the long battery life (personal experience verified).

I note the Amazfit second dot selling point is: BODY COMPOSITION MEASUREMENT

Also, check the 1 star reviews re warranty, battery claims, etc.

        • I get the Strava angle as it is social… but within Garmin Connect you also get a lot of other things eg running dynamics, a lot more stats, adaptive training plans, training readiness/status, and pace pro… all that holistic stuff where you need data points from all your activities and sleep to get your next Training session

    • +1

Different line. You get an instinct for very long battery life at the compromise of smart features. An FR upgrade requires another FR.

though the X45 line been discontinued, so you'll need to look at the 255 music and up.

Amazfit is known for their terrible accuracies.

      • Amazfit is known for their terrible accuracies.

Amazfit Balance has much improved heart rate accuracy compared with its predecessors. In term of heart rate accuracy for running for example, this watch is more accurate than Apple watch ultra gen 2, Samsung galaxy watch 5, or even Samsung galaxy watch ultra lol. Proof that more expensive doesn't always mean better.

Check the accuracy comparisons of so many smartwatches from here:
        https://m.youtube.com/@TheQuantifiedScientist/videos

I am not biased as I have Huawei GT-Runner :P

    • thanks for telling us about balance, still on bip U think i might upgrade :)

      • Definitely improved upgrade. Read my comment below :)

      • Still thinking about the watch. Most likely outcome is keeping the FR645 until I actually decide to run an ultra. My wife is still wearing the original Bip from 2018 so it's a bit to tell her that I need a new watch without some justification.

        • Some features that I'd like to have in the future are ECG, blood pressure, fall detection, and blood sugar monitoring (none in my Huawei GT-Runner). Huawei Watch D has blood pressure feature for example. More smartwatches have other features like ECG, fall detection, etc. I wish the accuracy of these features could be measured independently by "The Quantified Scientist" someday maybe.

Blood sugar monitoring with Garmin and Dexcom CGM for example:

But if compared with Garmin Forerunner 165 in your other post, Garmin is more accurate and cheaper too ;-)

I can't vouch for the health metrics and other features as I haven't tried Garmin or Amazfit.

  • Is this a smaller size 40mm?

    • +1

      Yeah it’s the smaller one

There is also the bigger one from the UK but no solar and a little cheaper

      • I think there is a bigger solar one but at a regular price

        • have another look there is a camo and a regular one both for under 300$

          • @noogaz: Not solar?

If there is, which one is it?

  • What's the glass on these like, scratch easy?

    • Would not have a clue maybe same as a mobile phone… as it’s not the sapphire crystal lens

      • Iirc, Gorilla Glass 3.

    • I've had the non-solar version for the past 12 months wearing it non-stop. I don't have any scratches on the screen and I've banged it on things a few times by accident.

      • +1

My non solar is 5 years old and the glass is in perfect condition

  • Garmin Instinct 2, Camo Edition @ $289

  • -2

I tried Garmin and returned it . Back to ticwatch.

    • any reason why ? i see tic watch 5 is on sale for $336

      • WearOS is far better than os on Garmin.

        • Ticwatch is garbage in term of accuracy. Check YouTube "The Quantified Scientist":
          https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_vUae6LZTaQ

          Check his other comparisons:
          https://m.youtube.com/@TheQuantifiedScientist/videos

Before I know this accuracy comparison video channel, I thought that I'd wish to get Ticwatch someday … Instead I got Huawei GT-Runner :P (among the best smartwatches after Apple watches, Pixel watch 3, Huawei GT3 Pro).

For wear os smartwatch, better choose Pixel watch 3 over Ticwatch.

  • To those of you who use smart watches for payment, how secure is that? Can the function be easily locked/unlocked?

I use my phone sometimes but disable NFC and lock the phone when not in use.

    • +4

I have mine to type a 4-digit PIN before I use it. If you type in the wrong PIN three times, it deletes the card from your watch, and then you have to re-enable it on Garmin Connect.

      Quite secure in that regard

      • Oh thanks, that's better than I expected.

Been using a Garmin Instinct 2 (non-Solar) for a couple of weeks now, does the usual HR, sleep, vibrate on notification etc. and then has a bunch of stuff tied into the app based around running, and can pair with external sensors, very much an outdoor fitness watch, and not your typical smart watch (smart watch is more versatile).

My reasons for buying were long battery life, usually 7+ days between charging, and the sleep, HR, body battery and training readiness features, it functions well enough and looks somewhat like a modern G-shock watch, the features I though would be great are 'OK', I mainly train indoors at a gym, and don't do heaps of cardio, so a lot of features are lost on me.

    • whats the Vibration motor like?

      • +1

Very strong. U can't miss a noti with it.

        • I can second that haha

  • +4

For those wondering between the solar and non solar. The base doesn’t support Garmin pay. The solar or other non base variations can do contactless payment.

    • Only good if people are not bringing their phone such as exercise outside and pay goods with the watch. I prefer to still bring my phone (put it on my arm with accessory) while running for example.

  • this or the Garmin Instinct 2 (Camo Edition)?

I think pricing-wise Instinct 2S Solar and Instinct 2 Solar are on-par, which are both about $100 more expensive than the non-solar variants.
