Eero 6+ Vs TP Link Deco X68 (And now Deco XE75 Pro)

Hello OzBargain home networking experts!

Following on from this discussion - I’m looking at either the Eero 6+ or Deco x68.

Which is better?! The TP Link is tri-band, which is better, is that right? But then why is the Eero almost the same price for Dual Band only?

TP Link. Good brand and options, plus it is Tri Brand as you indicated.

I use a lot of the TP Link for IT installs and it is reliable plus easy to setup.

I've used TPLink routers before and can swear by em.. Rock solid and stable. Haven't used their Deco series though..

Here's the thing, currently using an Eero 6+ courtesy Superloop and it seems to struggle with 2 of my devices.. Exhibiting painfully slow browsing and most times won't even load the pages. Been reading around and appears to be a bug. Switched DNS servers with no difference. Switching back to my older router.

    • Interesting.

I need to upgrade my setup, that much is clear. But I have a lot of Sonos speakers. I haven’t been affected by appageddon at all, so I am a little nervous that making this change could cause me issues.

Looks like TPLink is the way.

As I said in the discussion in the other thread, it needs to cover 300sqm inside and under my house (where I have an office), and cover a little of outside for a Ring doorbell. I feel like a 2 pack should be enough, but with the Orbi I needed 3 because the signal did not seem to travel through one particular wall!

  • Well the Deco 68 went up to $477!

Now thinking about the Deco XE75 2-pack (https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0BNDV1P27/ref=ewc_pr_i…), just worried about not having that third node.

  • So, this has been a bit of a disaster.

I've had 2 XE75 Pro's running for a week now, and I'm unhappy as I'm struggling for coverage.

I have one Deco next to my TV (TV is wired), and the second is about 8 - 10 metres away in the dining room. The Deco app says that the signal strength is strong, but I only have to walk about 6 metres away before the wireless signal strength drops to around 50-60%. Is that normal?

Even sitting in front of the TV I can only get 600mbps. As for walking to the back of the house, or underneath where I have an office, I get about 50mbps. Stood in front of the 2nd node I get just 100mbps.

It seems thinking I could replace that Netgear setup with just 2 nodes was a mistake, but those speeds, even wireless, next to the Deco's seem crazy low to me. I don't know the exact make-up of the walls in the house. I know there is asbestos in some of them.

What am I missing? Unfortunately, I don't have a device with which I can use an ethernet cable to test true speed. If I have to buy another node, I can look into that. If I buy a different (cheaper) set of Deco's that don't support wifi-6e, I know I can use them, but what's the impact on the network as a whole - does it "downgrade" to the lesser Deco's?
