Edit : Found another drive on sale, this time a Gen 5 drive at an amazing price, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869860

On sale due to Prime Day in the US starting in a few days (essentially now).

The drive is possibly only 2nd to the Samsung 990 Pro in terms of performance. EDIT : Not anymore, since gen 5 drives came along.

Some performance numbers here, compared to other top of the line drives at the time (with the review done just prior to Samsung 990 Pro launch),

Anyway, for some reason, Australian retailers rarely stock Solidigm, even though it's basically the Intel spinoff of their SSD division from a few years ago.

So it's rare to ever see it on sale, available in Australia, and especially at such a great price.

Are there any reasons not to opt for Crucial T500 2TB instead, which is available at $220-$240 Amazon AU, considering the P44 also suffers the same pSLC cache issue which SK Hynix P41 currently has?

    • To be fair, you have to do a linear write of over 500gb to the 2tb drive (which is around 25mins at 6000MB/s), for the issue to rear it's head. And when it does, your only restricted to 2200 MB/s for 25mins, before it kicks back up to full speed.

More details here on a test done on the P41 (which is essentially almost the same drive as the Solidigm P44 Pro),

Just continuing from your reply above & the one to netsurfer, I have the Hynix P41, which is practically Solidigm P44 Pro.
The issue with the pSLC cache not being able to clear itself until you manually do a full secure erase still persist, and it's not a matter of 20+minutes for the pSLC cache to clear.

The issue is temporarily gone once you do a secure erase, but it's hard to recommend P41/P44Pro right now as long as the issue itself persist.

        • Hmm…

          (grimances at my current purchase)

I'll look more into it. Ta.

  • Some people reported: P44Pro Sequential writes are unusually slow

It's unclear why P44Pro (and SK Hynix P41 Platinum) seems to not doing the house keeping tasks for a long time, resulting in pSLC cache being rarely available.

    • Interesting. I'm wondering how long this person left the drive before testing it again, after doing the initial copy.

Depending on the cache size/drive size used, it will take 20+ minutes for the pSLC cache to clear.

If it's like a day or something… then there is a major issue.

I'll look into this some more, but the pSLC associated drop in performance once all the cache is used, is inherent to all pSLC drives as far as I'm aware. (?)

  • with the review done just prior to Samsung 990 Pro launch

Nearly two years ago. The M.2 SSD world has moved on in two years.

Here's a REAL current list of what Tom's Hardware has found to be the fastest SSDs. The fastest NOW are twice as fast as a Solidigm P44 or a Samsung 990.

    https://www.tomshardware.com/features/ssd-benchmarks-hierarc…

    • Fair enough.

Gen 5 drives are indeed twice as fast.

But they are generally $150 more (for 2tb), compared to top of the line gen 4 drives.

PCPartPicker indicates that most 2tb Gen 5 drives pricing starts around $385.

However… While perusing 2tb gen 5 prices, I came across a special on amazon US for the 2TB Corsair MP700 (probably as part of the current prime day US sales as well), which camelcamelcamel, indicates was previously going for $464.

I guess I will post that as a new deal here, lol. :)

  • I know this is 7gbps but for literally $100 less (Paid $136) I grabbed this https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C9DHGBK9 if anyone is interested.

Real-world you'll never notice the difference.

      Now that's a brand name

      • It's probably fine.

        Unless it dies…

So, it would probably be pretty good choice as a steam game drive. But I personally wouldn't use it as a system drive.

    • Did you purchase the PCIe4.0-7350MB/s for $136? That model is still coming up at $229.99.

        No, just the 5gbps one.
