Engine Tick on 2022 Tucson Diesel NX4

Hi braintrust, I've been having a persistent ticking sound from the engine during cold start up for my 2022 Tucson Diesel NX4. It's been to the dealer three times already, but they can't diagnose it (they hear the sound but don't know what's causing it, and don't have enough time to identify the source before it goes away). Here's what I've noticed:

  • It started after the latest service (oil and filter change).
  • It only happens during cold start-up and often on cold mornings.
  • The ticking used to last around 3 to 5 seconds, then goes away, but sometimes lately, it's been ticking for longer before it quietens down (30-40 seconds).

I'm thinking it's the timing chain or something related to the oiling, perhaps the oil filter not holding oil pressure, leading to timing chain ticking.

Would appreicate any insights or advice on the issue and which part might be causing it. Any advice on how to deal with Hyundai/dealer to have it fixed would be great too.

Given it started after an oil change, my money is that they used the wrong oil. Too thick when cold. What grade does your manual say to use?

    • 5W-30 most hyundais uses that, it would take serious effort for them to add something else, but you never know with dealers.

      • 5w30 is just part of the story

Can you link to the online manual or a photo of the oil spec sheet from yours?

        • According to the manual, ACEA C5/C2/C3 and anywhere from 0W20 to 10W40 depending on the climate, 5.6L. At least capacity wise, it is correctly filled.

Did anyone check the glow plug relay?

    • +2

Common rail diesels don't use the glow plugs in our temps.

Noisy tappets, with no removal of engine head (which they would not have done in a normal "service"), are usually a sign of an oil problem …

Given it started after a service (assuming they had no reason to adjust camshaft/tappets/lifters/rockerarm/etc), it's either not enough oil or they used the wrong grade oil :/

Well I've learnt something new by the comments above 👍

I'd get that cough looked at first. Sounds pretty nasty.

Yeah, that was my mother in law. She’s on immunosuppressants, so whatever coughs and colds my 1yo catches from childcare, she gets it too. It’s their version of bonding I guess

Sounds like the lifters bleeding down from sitting overnight and as oil pressure comes back up on startup, they take up the slack. Now, if that noise was going on for minutes at a time, or not going away at all, I would be more concerned. The fact it only last 1 or 2 seconds makes it hard to diagnose fully…

Note it with the dealer, then Kodak it (let it develop). When it gets worse, get your lifters replaced/new engine/whatever Hyundai do under warranty.

Also, I showed the videos to Uncle Ian and he said "Nah, she's all good, f#%kin' send it!" But it is after 5pm on a Sun'dy long weekend with NRL Grand Final and he's had a skinfull… Sooooooooo… YMMV?

    • Yeah that was originally the plan and it's getting worse over time, this morning the tick went on for almost a minute before going away. It's going to the dealer tmr and I have so many videos of the tick. Any idea on how I should push for the dealer to do something about it? I wonder if I should get it serviced elsewhere and send the bill to the dealer/hyundai.
Guess I'll have to sell it before warranty ends and get a Toyota 😆

Drain the oil and replace with correct type. If noise goes away sue the dealer for putting wrong oil in it.

  • Thank you everyone! I haven't considered it might be the oil itself given most hyundais run sythetic 5w30. It's going to the dealer again tomorrow and I'll be sure to mention it.

I wonder how should I push for this to be resolved. They don't seem keen to do anything preemptive to see to attempt to fix the issue (ie changing oil and filter again) and only doing basic diagnostic like code scanning despite a bunch of evidence I have here. Also if it happens to be the oil, is there risk of damage to the engine?

Of course there is a risk to the engine if the wrong oil is used.

Ask to see the drum that was used to fill your car. It's unlikely they have a drum, more likely some kind of enormous vat, but every engine uses a different oil and if all the oil filler hoses all feed from one source….well that's concerning.

      • Sounds good, I'll follow up to see if they could show me that the correct oil was used.

        • As above, it's simple to check the actual oil level … if they didn't put enough in it would sound like that as well …

          • @7ekn00:

if they didn't put enough in it would sound like that as well …

Well, that's blatantly incorrect. The oil level being low would have no bearing on this noise. If anything, low engine oil level would exacerbate the noise as the engine started and ran, not cause it to dissipate and vanish after 2 or 3 seconds.

Engine oil gets "lower" after the engine is started, so if "low oil level" caused this noise, once the engine started, the oil level would be even "lower" (due to about 1/3rd of it now circulating around the engine internals) and the pick up would be sucking air. But the oil level would have to be REALLY low for that to happen, and the noise would get worse the longer the engine ran, not go away.

  • Bad oil filter that won’t allow cold oil to pass - replace it and see if the noise goes.

    • Indeed. The issue is the dealer don't want to spend a cent unless the issue can be pin pointed and done through warranty which is difficult in situation like this. I wonder if I should get it serviced/diagnosed elsewhere and send the bill to the dealer if it fixes the issue.

  • I would consider getting car advice from Facebook groups that are centred around your car's model.

    • Did that first but gotten nothing sadly.

  • Update:
After another 4 days at the dealer, they replaced the engine oil and oil filter as per Hyundai technical's directions, but the ticking persists on cold starts even on warm days. Not sure what to do now lol.
They did use the correct oil this time (Shell Helix HX7 5W-30).
