As travel ramps back up in Japan for the Autumn colours and year-end school and Christmas/New Year holiday period, I thought people might find this deal useful again.

The previous posting of this deal was well-received so thanks Mastercard for continuing to offer this. The good news is a few more cards have joined the program.

You do need a Mastercard that comes with the Mastercard Travel Rewards perk. You need to sign up for the program and activate prior to spending for the cashback. The cards below provide access to the program and some do not charge any international transaction fee:

  • Anyone done it with the Westpac Qantas Credit Card, and can confirm that there'd be a FX fee?

    • +1

The charge will be in Japanese yen so you will incur a foreign transaction fee on the Westpac credit card but you should still be ahead with the cashback if you top up with just ¥3000 yen per transaction. 3% foreign transaction fee means your foreign transaction fee is the equivalent of ¥90, but the cashback is ¥200, saving you ¥110 for every ¥3000 transaction.

  • +1

200¥ is $2 - might get hit a fees higher than that.

    • Two cards on the list do not have foreign transaction fees: The Commbank Ultimate Rewards and the 28 degree cards. The Travelex money card also does not have foreign transaction fees though when they use their yen rates or Mastercard's yen rates may depend on conditions of the card and there may be other fees.

A 3% foreign transaction fee will still have you come out on top as per https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15773476/redir

  • +1

not working for my Commbank Ultimate for some reason.

    • Check that you've not blocked online transactions and foreign transactions. If I remember correctly, Mastercard does a $0 pre-authorisation to check if the card is valid.

  • +13

I know this is OzBargain, but I feel like the effort outweighs the $2 saved.

    • +1

      It is a 6.7% discount!

If you were going to load a Suica or top it up in your iPhone, you might as well take advantage of the cashback anyway.

    • +1

What exactly is the effort other than signing up for the program and activating? Also you can get cashback 5 times so that is actually $10 saved.

  • +1

I am going to Japan in 3 weeks and would have been using the 28 Degrees Card to do this anyway.
    Thanks

  • does anyone know if you can use this suica card travelling on bullet train from tokyo to kyoto / osaka ?
can you use this suica card on other train lines around the city of tokyo & osaka?
    thanks in advance

    • +1

      No
      Yes

      • +1

Yes BUT for shinkansen you must use a e-Shinkansen ticket such as SmartEX service
        Yes OK for local trains.

        • Things you learn!

          • @timthetoolman: But buying paper ticket for shinkansen is still the easiest and pain-free method.

            • @FromAtoZ: i just looked up about SmartEX service, to clarify this is for only on Shinkansen (bullte) trains only.?
Then it also mention about IC cards? Is this for foreign visitors to use in Japan or for local people?
Is it better to purchase this e-shinkansen ticket prior to arriving in Japan?
Sorry will be first time traveling to Japan so asking many questions

    • all you need to know about local IC cards

      https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2359_003.html

      additional about welcome suica
      https://www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/welcomesuica/welcomesuica.…

the difference is that welcome Suica
No deposit is needed and the Welcome Suica can be used for 28 days from the date of purchase after which it expires and all credit is forfeited.

while the regular IC cards do not (but require initial deposit)

shortage of chips has made getting regular Physical IC card much harder for tourist
this is partly why APPLE PAY suica has become popular -(no google version exists yet)

      • +1

Suica is available on Android, but the phone has to be compatible with Osaifu-Keitai, meaning it's essentially region locked to Japanese devices only.
Technically you can get the protocol working on Pixel devices bought internationally, but it requires jailbreaking the device since all international devices will fail the "IsJapanSKU" check the Osaifu-Keitai configuration app makes.

        • lol ok

          I will rephrase
no easy non jailbreak google version for international tourist

    200 Yen = $1.97 cents Aussie

28 Degrees card holders beware - I did 5 x transactions in the last deal and they only credited me for one. I’ve been emailing them about it for months and rarely even get a response, let alone a resolution. I’m cancelling the card as soon as I get back from Japan because of this and the new monthly fees.

  • +1

Oddly when I tried to sign up with my CBA ultimate award it says the card number is incorrect or ineligible.

    • +1

Check that you've not blocked online transactions and foreign transactions. If I remember correctly, Mastercard does a $0 pre-authorisation to check if the card is valid.

      • Check and all switched on , very strange , i can sign up for priceless.com but not travel rewards, later just keep saying :'The card number you provided has been entered incorrectly or is not eligible for this program. Please try again or contact the bank that issued your Mastercard to inquire about eligibility.'

tried both directly to the site or from the link above for the Ultimate awards. saw this happened with some other pple with 28 degrees from the last deal post….but seems no fix for this.

and based on my daily dealing with CBA staff, they barely know the product themself….not mentioning the rarely mentioned travel awards…..

        ummmmm

        • Maybe try on a different day. I had no trouble adding mine.

        • Did you happen to work this out at all?

          Having the same issue.

  • +3

A real pity it doesn't work with Google Wallet.

  • +1

    do they sell Suica again?
couldn't get one in Tokyo in March.
They had signs everywhere saying they dont sell new Suica cards for tourists 🤷‍♂️

    • This offer is only valid when topped up with Apple Pay

  • +3

For anyone travelling just in Tokyo.

The subway has a 72hour ticket that's way cheaper and better value for 1500 yen. 500 yen a day

    • +2

you really need to plan your day properly to avoid all JR tracks though….

      • +2

Use Google maps. Exclude trains under the filters, just use the subway. It's easier than you think. The recent price hike for the JR pass makes it ridiculously expensive anyway.

    • +2

can confirm, used this heaps and was good value. its for both the tokyo metro and toei subway lines.

      • +1

It is great value isn't it? 5 dollars a day for unlimited travel, and the metro and subway lines pretty much cover anywhere.

    • +1

Suica still the best option. Works for any line, any major city, plus busses, ferries, taxis, vending machines, convenience stores…

      • +1

I thought this was Ozbargain, not Ozconvenience?

I did say it's just for Tokyo, you can travel for 5 dollars a day around Tokyo all you like. The metro lines are fantastic.

    • Can I use it for Narita or Haneda airport?

      • +1

Your cheapest option for Narita is the airport bus which is 1500yen for adults, or double from 11pm-5am.

For Haneda this ticket won't work. This pass is only for Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines.

        • If I don’t use the 72 hour metro pass, how much is it roughly if you’re using Suica? Maybe 6 short trips in a day?

          • +1

@sween64: Something like Shinjuku to Ginza is 210yen per trip, so you do the math.

  • Can anyone confirm that the top up credits don't expire?

    Thanks

  • +2

This deal has been ongoing for a couple of years. I have done it multiple times with my CommBank Ultimate Awards. Usually I re-charge 5 x Y3000 one after the other. On my last trip I rolled into a new offer period and did it again, so 10 x Y3000 re-charges.. might only be Y200 but it adds up!

  • +2

I just signed up to Mastercard rewards with a Bankwest platinum Mastercard and can add this offer. The Bankwest platinum card is FX fee free.

    • does it also work with bankwest qantas card?

      • You can test it out on Mastercard's website by going through the registration process (you won't be able to register if your card does not qualify). If you don't want to fully register yet, use the "See offers" tab beside the "Sign Up" tab. The offers are only shown to you if your card is eligible.

  • +3

Could register with my Up debit card. Have done one top up and will see if it tracks.

    • Keen to know if it works with Up Debit Cards too, my account is registered to 28 Degrees so if it works ill link it to Up instead! Thanks!

      • +1

Confirming I just got the refund on my Up debit card.

  • +1

    Thanks. All done easy

  • +1

Thanks OP. Travelling to Japan next year. Works with my Wise debit card, very convenient!

    • -1

How did you get yours to work? Wise is VISA and when I try to add via Mastercard website it’s saying error

“The card number you provided has been entered incorrectly or is not eligible for this program. Please try again or contact the bank that issued your Mastercard to inquire about eligibility.”

      • +2

        My Wise card is Mastercard…

    • How does it work with Wise card? you just top up the Suica in Iphone using the wise card?

      • Add Wise card to Apple Pay and top up that way.

  • +1

    ¥200 yay!
Two plates of sushi at my local, or almost 3x 2L bottles of Fuji Water at the supermaket.

  • so only certain product from each bank is eligible for this deal?

I..E , for comm bank, post is saying it needs a Commbank Ultimate Rewards credit card, so if i got a normal comm bank master card, it wont work?

    • Yes it will only work for banks and specific Mastercard products, depending on what agreement the bank has with MasterCard.

If you are not sure, you can attempt a registration and if the website comes up with an error that your card is not eligible, then you will have to get a different card that is to get these cashback deals: https://mtr.mastercardservices.com/en

  • anybody know how long it takes for the transaction to get registered into your Mastercard Travel Rewards account?

    • +1

In my experience, usually 5-7 working days after the transaction has been fully processed (not pending).
