Calling with No Caller ID Not Actually The Case

Just had an interesting experience with Optus.

Calling with an iPhone "Show my caller ID" off to hide my new number.

Confirmed listed number (different to the one I am calling from) with consultant.

Consultant was able to send sms to new phone and see my number without issue.

Anyone had this before?

Apparently they can get around the hide your phone number feature.

your number will still be visible when sending SMS

While the "Hide Caller ID" feature works to conceal your number from the recipient in normal calls, service providers like Optus can still see your number for technical and security reasons. Even if Caller ID is turned off, the phone number is still transmitted in the background for purposes like billing, network management, and emergency services. Therefore, it’s not unusual that Optus could access the number internally, despite the feature being enabled on the user’s device.

Was it possible u called and left a vm? I've never tried this before but sometimes when I listen to my voicemails I have an option to call back. That might be one way they got the number…

  • Is the number with Optus?

    • reading above …
sounds like number is with Optus +++ OP has a mobile contract with Optus.
OP - please correct if wrong.

      As per Gdsamp …
(+++ added info) - mobile number should be registered to an IMEI (the actual phone itself) … all of which can be accessed at a provider based level.

"Hide caller ID" - doesn't exclude at a provider based level (or EMG services/etc).

    I'm astounded you'd think they couldn't.

  • Using a payphone gets around this.
