[NSW, VIC] 25% off Storewide in-Store Only @ The Essential Ingredient

230

First time Deal, please be nice :). We were at the Essential Ingredient Prahran yesterday, which is having a 25% off sale STOREWIDE.

Sadly they have gone into Administration. It seems this sale is on the lowdown as I can not find any mention of it online (and I did not take a picture of the sign but they were all over the store). Stores in Prahran, South Melbourne, and Crows Nest NSW.

NOTE they did have a sign on the counter saying that they are not accepting gift cards at this time. There was no indication of how long the sale might last (or, indeed, how long the business might last) so if you're a regular at the Essential Ingredient, head on down ASAP. Please be kind to staff in store for obvious reasons.

Sad to see, such a great shop.

    What do they sell

    • +2

Boutique Groceries/Homewares store. I've linked to the AFR story on them going into Administration, but the store website is here https://www.essentialingredient.com.au/

Better to link to the actual store rather than a paywalled news article. Add the news article into the description.

        • please be nice

          • +2

@MS Paint: I upvoted the deal, and was nice?

          • +3

@MS Paint: @MS Paint, how is @Lucille Bluth not being nice?! They provided practical information to the OP on how to meet posting guidelines

            • @SirFrankGrimes: I was just having a lend at the OP because the rules say don't ask for people to be nice.

Just like I could have a go at you for tagging me in twice.

            • +2

@SirFrankGrimes: Thanks @SirFrankGrimes OzBargain sometimes makes me scratch my head. All in good fun though and I am not salty. OP ended up taking on my recommendation so the link goes to a non-paywalled link, instead the store. So others will benefit I guess.

        • +3

Updated, linked to a nine news story (unpaywalled).

          • @mitty: Thanks, some of their homeware stuff looks nice. Will head down to their store during lunchtime.

A shame, but not a surprise

    • +1

Yeah. In the current economic climate sadly these kinds of businesses are probably going to be the first to fall.

Thanks, I’m opening one next year 🙃

The issue with TEI is the premium they charge - not that their selling premium ingredients, but that nearly EVERYTHING is sold at a premium price when it’s nothing more than a repackaged bulk product or something you may not be able to find as easily as a cheaper thing. IE, they were selling Callebaut chocolate at about 20% more than what my price point will be, which is already more than double my cost (I have a great supplier aha)

        • +3

Oh I agree totally. We only really go there to buy one or two items for our pantry that are hard to get elsewhere. But yes, most things were overpriced and equivalents could be obtained elsewhere much cheaper.

          • +1

@mitty: I bought some Ancho chilli powder from them at Christmas last year, because shipping online killed any deals I could get - still paid a premium for it, but it was the first time I’d seen it in a store

Sure I can’t afford truffles atm, but I’d have had more luck affording them at other stores in the same market than theirs aha

            • +2

@linkindan: Amazon is pretty good for mexican stuff and others e.g. japanese and indian, malay and indonesian too

              • +1

@frondono: Unfortunately Amazon recently stopped delivering to my area, and only a limited range have returned to being available. Also, at the time at least, the Ancho powder wasn’t available without additional shipping on Amazon too

              • @frondono: ooh thanks for that. i ddint realise that was the case so will need to suss out

Huge agree with this comment. Essential Ingredient has great curated stock, which makes for a fun perusal & discovery in-store, but the huge premium was always way too much. Especially in a world where you can open an app & have it delivered next day at a guaranteed cheaper price. The only exception was their 'house brand' olive oil etc. which I considered the rotisserie chicken supermarket pull to go in. Most times you'd go in adjunct to your market shop to discover what's new etc. and with that research easily buy elsewhere.

For what it's worth, I think many customers would still have been happy to pay more if they had thought about combining focused 'specials' with experiential in-store experts or demos I think that would have made a better experience. Eg. Carbon steel pan demonstration or 'free seasoning' along with respectable prices on the pans. Doesn't have to be the cheapest. Can be in support with the sponsoring brand.

Unfortunately for them believing they are exclusive, premium in a world absent of competition is a death knell. A shame.

Yeah it's really a curated cooking store for wealthy Toorakians. I used to live right near them and would pop in when I went to the market but would never see anything that I couldn't easily get at a better price. The only time I spent money in there was when I had a gift voucher from a refunded cooking class and even then it took me a good hour to decide on something that didn't seem like a waste. Chefs Hat in South Melbourne would of eaten a lot of their business as they have a better range and prices and most of the ingredients are easily sourced online now.

@Cheaplikethebird: I wanted some glacé fruits for my Grandmother and knowing they’d have them I went in (also hoped to exploit my parents credit card while they were down aha). Saw the prices, thought for a moment and went to one of the fruit/nut/spice vendors in the main market hall - got a variety of twice as much fruit for the same price as a single fruit from TEI

        • Let us know the name of your shop when it opens

  • +3

I'll wait for the 80% off

    • +3

Was thinking something similar. Unfortunately 25% off at Essential Ingredient doesn't get you far, likely still cheaper elsewhere. The margins there were that ridiculous.

  • +1

Let's be real, who in their right mind would pay those price gouging prices…

Just looked at a couple ingredients real quick
    Chipotle chillies 50g $8 at EI - $8.5 for 100g from amazon
Sushi rice 1kg $12 EI - can get as low as $24.5 for 10kg or $4.7 for 1kg packs from Amazon

I don't understand people showing so much love for these price gouging pigs while crying about cost of living

    • +5

The stores are located in suburbs where many live beyond their means.

      • oh that makes more sense

    • people showing so much love for these price gouging pigs

Yet, they are going into administration.

      • Yet, they are going into administration.

I think "finally" would be a better word than "yet" in that sentence.

  • +2

Bought some De Buyer pans from them as couldn't find anywhere else. Shame that they couldn't make their business work since they seemed to have some stock no one else did.

  • Found this shop for the first time 2 weekends ago and thought it was pretty cool (South Melboure). Unfortunate they are closing :(

  • They have stopped honouring gift vouchers online too.

  • Seriously not a surprise at all.

In this increasingly corporately dominated world, high quality & ethical businesses are being squeezed to death.

I can only shake my head at some of the comments in this thread. It's as if people believe that a small business has the buying power of an entity like Amazon, & as such believe the per unit buy price of (as an example) a packet of rice is the same for both, therefore the small business is "price gouging".
