  • Stupid question, but is each router meant to have its own network name? That's how I had set it up initially. And if not, how can I fix this? I renamed the name and I still had to manually switch wifi networks when jumping around the house.

    • +6

No should all be the same network name so it provides seamless coverage around the house and will steer your device to the best source. I can't provide any info how to merge them other then reseting and starting from scratch but maybe there's some info out there

      • Thanks I'll give that a go, appreciate your help.

      You made a huge mistake

I have 5 that are now paperweights.

They worked well for 2 years then suddenly a bad update took down my network for several days. I moved over to Ubiquiti and haven't looked back since.

    • +4

Must be an issue with the way you were using them. I’ve installed every update upon launch on my eero’s and they’ve been going strong for just over 4 years now.

Must be an issue with the way you were using them

I had a similar experience with a Netgear router/wap many years ago. Afrer one particular firmware update it started going completely catatonic every time a cheap ZTE 7" tablet connected to it. Obviously a compatibility problem, and quite possibly ZTE not complying exactly with the wifi standards, but still, the wap firmware should have been robust and that's the vendor's responsibility, not the user's. (I did manage to downgrade the firmware and use that tablet no problems afterwards.)

        • i recall having this issue too. Could not pinpoint the culprit client but the Netgear Nighthawk firmware definitely needed downgrading

    • +3

Mine are rock solid and regularly updated. Best routers ever had and work seamlessly around the house. No complaints at all.

I learnt from somewhere if you stuff it with explosives, you can give it to your worst enemies.

    • Have 3 only using 2 (3rd not needed), have had all updates applied on time with no issues for 3 years

  • +7

    It's AC1300 only Wi-Fi 5 (IEEE802.11a/b/g/n/ac)

While sufficient for most nbn speeds one should wonder if it's not worth to get to newer standards

  • I have one of these as my modem (I'm with more nbn) and for whatever reason my router just fails when trying to connect to the internet with an ethernet cable out the back of one of these into my router. Been trying for ages to fix it yet nothing, anyone know where might be the best place to get it looked at? More nbn support is hopeless bc they won't help you if you use your own router

    • +3

Are you using the correct terminology here or am I just not understanding. What is the router for? There should be no need for it in this situation. The only other thing you might want to plug directly into the Eero is a switch if you need more ports..

nbn wall box -> eero -> switch

      • I am using a router in addition to the modem to extend range on the other end of the house + give me ethernet ports for my pc etc. Atm it is box -> Eero -> switch -> router and the family pc is plugged into the switch and yet still works so not the switch's fault has to be something to do with the router

        • Sounds like because it's a router. No need for a router as the Eero is doing that. What you need is another Eero, it will see the first one is doing the routing and just turn itself into a mesh access point.

Otherwise on the router turn off dhcp as it sounds like it's handing out ip address when it shouldn't be, as thats the Eeros job. Check and see if the router has an "access point only" or "bypass" mode or something like that

          • @thatsnasty: So I revisited the problem today and I was able to have it work in repeater mode which connects via wifi to the modem, but 1. I cannot get to the router home page no matter what I do to change the settings for whatever reason and 2. it'd be more stable if connected over ethernet. Weirdly enough the internet light is off yet still technically works…

So I tried access point mode in which used ethernet however this just flat out doesn't connect for whatever reason, it could be the dhcp thing as you say but as the router home page isn't accessible even in this mode I can't change any settings!

No idea what is going on but thanks for your assistance anyways

            • @ThatNintendoKid: The Eero is already a router - throw your second router away.

You only need one router - trying to use two causes a whole bunch of issues.

If you need more range at the other end of the house, then you put a second Eero there.

              • @Nom: Thing is I've already bought it a while ago and technically it works don't want to spend more. Just ideally want to go wired but yeah if I can avoid getting another + another switch as I'd need more ethernet ports (the Eero only has 1 free excluding the wan connecting them together) then that would be good - and theoretically I should be able to just running into issues

    • I also want to know, please share any experience using this as an nbn modem.

      • +1

These can plug in directly to the nbn equipment. However only certain newer model will work if the nbn provider uses pppoe for authentication

        • Exactly.

I got an extra single Eero 6 router to connect to the NBN box as it supports pppoe as well. So I can connect to any ISP now.

The Eero 6 meshes with the 3 x Eeros from this set. You don’t need to upgrade all of them.

          • @myfeetarehappy: That's what I did. I got free a Eero 6+ from Superloop but need 18 months contract.

  • Friend has one and always has trouble when churning, updating PPPOE doesn't seem to stick and requires resetting

    • Same issue on my google nest.
I now just churn between IPoE providers

    • See my comment above

  • Deco x50 3 pack $259 at TGGC is a much better proposition for an extra $100. AX3000 vs AC1300

  • By app only is that similar to the Deco's where you need initial internet and have to go through their servers to manage anything?

Not that I'm a privacy but I remember reading a comment here talking about that and that did seem silly to me.

Ended up buying an Asus with the possibility of future AiMesh … without dependency on how the app space there is in the future.

  • how does one connect this if I have FTTB and my data socket is still an old school RJ45 cable

    • +1

The router has two RJ45 connections. Just connect to one of them.

This looks like the same model I have, J010011 (although in the app it lists it as A010011), got a 3 pack used 3 years ago, and it been working great, great coverage, i only use 2 of them, i live in a large 4 bedroom duplex and entire house is (including outside in the front and some of the back) is covered, i have the main one downstairs and the 2nd one upstairs, tried connecting the 3rd one upstairs too, was successful but then the two upstairs both started getting drop outs, i thought one might be faulty, but according to phone tech support, the phone agent believes that they are too close to each other and causing the issues so either spread them out more or just run one downstairs and one upstairs which i have been doing for 3 years no problems.

only "issue" is this is the older model and doesnt support pppoe, even though newer firmware has support but only for newer models, so if your ISP requires a PPPOE connection then you need a router for NBN connection then you connect your main unit into the router, you may need to contact tech support to help you set it up as its not design to work that way out of the box but they can adjust the settings remotely.

I have HFC NBN 100mbps, me setup is black NBN box to router, then router to main Eero unit. again great coverage and speed all over the house. Have approx 20-30 devices connected at any given time, only restriction is NBN connection itself, or the devices connected (older devices with not so great wifi). App is pretty straight forward to use, cant recall having any issues with it, i did find sometimes with network cable connections some random drop outs so just stuck with wifi and been running flawlessly

    • I bought same set three years ago and had exactly same setup but I did not know you can call support to setup PPPOE on eero 5.

      • you cant setup pppoe on it, i had to call them to get bridge mode working (so NBN box to another modem with pppoe setup then to eero)

    • A single Eero 6 will fix the pppoe issues (see my comment above)

  • Silly question: can this be connected to a WiFi hotspot, for example a phone or a WiFi dongle?

    • No I don't believe so.

      • Thanks for the info!

    • Youll need to buy a gl inet mango for that, to go in between.

  • Can anyone ELI5 or point me in the direction on what I'd need in terms of router/mesh/modem etc for a standard 4 bed house? At the moment I just have a router/modem where we use wifi to connect to everything and am noticing the internet is not as fast as I'd like. This whole thing is going over my head.

Imagine this whole thing like air conditioner. Having 1 air conditioner in your house might not able to cover the whole house.

A mesh wifi is a system where you install multiple air conditioners in different locations in the house. This will be able to cover your whole house even in very tricky corner if you place it carefully.

Now replace air conditioners with wifi mesh system. The mesh wifi will amplify the wifi signal to different location in your house ensuring that you will have the full speed in different location. The good thing is they still appear under the same network so there is no different on how you use your wifi normally.

      • Thanks, so then if I have all three 'bars' of wifi strength everywhere in my house currently, then I shouldn't need a mesh network, right?

  • I have one of the newer eero, If I wanted to extend my connection would one of these work with that or would I need to get a second one of the same generation?
