PS5 PlayStation Slim Disc Drive out of Stock Everywhere

Hi, I'm trying to buy a PS5 disc drive.

They're all out of stock, everywhere. I live chatted with JB and there is no stock in stores, they said they won't be getting anymore in. What the….. unless this person is lying? What do we do?

Not paying eBay prices.

There will be more stock on PS5 Pro release. Plenty preorders taken for the next batch of stock.

    • +1

      How do you know?

      • i asked sony and they said more will be released when the pro is released. i hope so as otherwise i will have to buy and settle for the 5 slim. as i have waited months and months to see if the pro rumour was true. just to hear it was only to find does. but no disc drive.

        • EB had preorders for the drive, but they sold out while I was fighting with their website
I haven't seen anyone else taking preorders. I'm going to wait until launch day and if I can't get one, will sadly be cancelling my Pro preorder

  • +1

there'll be more eventually, just have to wait

  • There’ll be more for sure. Ongoing PS Pro buyers will need one.

  • -1

Obviously been anticipated for the release of the ps5 pro, you are late to the party. Either you wait months or just buy at Ebay and don't look back.

  • Patience Iago. Patience.

  • +3

Didn’t need a crystal ball to see this coming..

And don’t worry, in about 4 to 6 months, Sony will announce the “PS5 Pro Pro” and that will be the PS5 Pro, but with an optical drive.

  • First time?

  • Wave 1 along with the preorder consoles is sold out. Wave 2 is comming but TBA. That's why you see nowhere list them.

  • +2

They are lying. Must not have liked your chat style.

  • +1

Just buy PS5 slim disk ver then transfer the drive to the Pro. Sell the diskless Slim.

    • im trying to do this but no one wants to buy it.

      • -1

Use it as Netflix in your lounge/bedroom then?

Just wait for new stock. I reckon Sony pulled all the drives from the market then they will repacked and rebadged it as disk drive for Pro.

I called two JB stores asking if I could walk in to do the preorder. And both stores said yes.

I went into my local JB store and asked if i can just preorder the disc drive. And they said yes! I made the preorder and paid in full. They told me when they get more in stock, I will get one.
    .

    • they told me no. and there none in stock.

      • Same but I kept insisting and finally they said they let me PO'ed but no promises.

        • My one just let me preorder no questions. Said I have one reserved from the next shipment in.

          • @kamykazi: Same here they let me place a purchase order but said JB hifi sent a memo out yesterday stating next batch is not until 2025

            • +1

@Jamesk811: That is ridiculous, Sony can get stuffed and I'm cancelling my PS5 Pro pre-order if I can't get a drive at launch. If you're going to make a drive an optional addon at least make the bloody thing available. If they think I'm just going to re-buy all of my games at inflated digital prices, they can think again.

              • @chromium: We need to bombard them with complaints so they realise how stupid this decision was!

                • @Jamesk811: I was told 2025 by EB games yesterday as well.
I don't believe it for a second, but just incase it's somewhat correct, I ended up ordering one off Amazon US for about $230aud to my door.

Atleast I know I'll have a drive in time now. 🤷‍♂️

                  • -1

@kjb1: I’m gonna buy a PS5 slim from Amazon 3 days before pro release and use that disc drive on my pro. You then get 45 days to return it so I’ll wait for me to get one when released then I’ll return the PS5 with the new disc drive. That way I don’t pay a cent more than what the ps5 drive is worth

                  • @kjb1: When did you do that? I don't see any in stock on Amazon US

                    • @chromium: https://www.amazon.com/Disc-Drive-Digital-Consoles-PlayStati…

Looks like the $170 ones are sold out now. There's some that are about $220, plus taxes obviously.

Third party sellers but they are shipped by Amazon so nothing to worry about.

                      • @kjb1: Looks like they’re not brand new though.

It’s still scalper prices …. Not too much different than buying from eBay.

                        • @proudwanderer: Arrived today.
Thankfully brand new in a sealed box.

No regrets. Atleast I know for certain I've got a drive launch day.

                      • @kjb1: Yeah, saw that. It looks like those ones aren't even new, at least the reasonably priced ones aren't. Sony have created this ridiculous situation that we're looking overseas and scalpers to why what should be basic accessory lol

                        • @chromium: That’s exactly right.

I have nothing against the decision to make the Pro digital only because it makes sense from a manufacturing perspective to make just one SKU, but as soon as they’ve made that decision they should be ramping up production of the disc drive - which should be a mass produced item and doesn’t require special materials that are in a shortage supply-wise or anything like that.

I mean - the disc drives practically sold out on day 1 when the Pro was announced, and now - weeks later - it’s still out of stock everywhere.

And we’re now hearing that they won’t be back in stock til 2025!

Is it really that hard to make a disc drive?

I bet sales of the Pro will initially be worse than expected - and a large part will be due to the disc drive shortage.

Is Sony really willing to sacrifice sales - just to push the “all digital” agenda?

                        • @chromium: Yeah not sure, I messaged one of the sellers and was told it's definitely new and sealed. No idea why Amazon are listing this way but I've bought "used" from third parties in the US many times and it's always been new. If it's not I'll send it back, or just suck it up 🤷‍♂️.

If you go into a couple of the listing's it states it's new stock.

        • Is that true? That the disc drive won’t be restocked until 2025?

          That’s horrible!

          • @proudwanderer: An EB Games manager in Sydney told me he thinks early next year.
So yeah, this rumour is getting around.

  • Literally just walked into JB and bought one today. Chatswood store

    • none in stock in vic.

  • I considered getting one as soon as the Pro was announced, but then it was all gone everywhere the next day.

Tried to preorder one from EB with the Pro and the website kept dying and by the time I finally checked out it was sold out. Nobody else had any for preorder on that day and I haven't seen stock anywhere since. Checked a few physical stores in Melbourne and haven't found any. Hopefully they'll be available before or on Pro launch day or I'll end up with an expensive paperweight.

  • I don’t understand what the problem is with making disc drives. They’re not limited edition or anything. They’re a mass produced product.

Why are they out of stock everywhere and still not back in stock after weeks!

    • I'm assuming (hoping) they're in the same shipment that the pros are arriving in. They still have another month to sort their shit out.

      • Hope you’re right. But if that were the case, they should have allowed us to preorder the disc drives.

They can even have a rule that you can only preorder the disc drive if you preorder the PS5 Pro (to stop the scalpers) and everyone else who wants to get the disc drive by itself only have to wait for after Nov 7 if there are any remaining.

That would at least give those who are willing to fork over the huge amount for the Pro some confidence that they would be able to play all their library of games on the brand new Pro from day 1.

        But crickets……

  • Cancelled my PS5 pro order today with the still yet to be verified murmurs that disc drives won't be arriving until 2025, but those rumors were enough. Doubt the pro will be sold out, and planning to get it in store again when the drives become available.

    • i got told by ebgames everyones canceling their orders for the ps5 pro lol

  • Will need to cancel the pro if I can’t walk out with a disc drive. Sony are (profanity) not giving it as the main option.

  • It's been two weeks and still no sign of updated stock …

    • +1

Likely will cancel my order with EB if there arent any updates by Friday. Not having 3/4 of my library unplayable because Sony are useless

      • It's so ridiculous!

What's so hard about making a disk drive?

Even if scalpers bought them all up on the day the Pro was announced, Sony could start making more from that day onwards and have them ready for release when the Pro is released!

      • Yep I'm in the same boat cancelled my preorder for now because no disc drive is a deal breaker. I remember Richard on Digital Foundry predicting this would happen and I thought no way would a stupid peripheral sell out. But here we are a week away from launch and no more disc drives in sight….

    • So pissed off about it that I cancelled my preorder.

  • Are there any good websites to easily track when more stock comes in? Every few days I check eb, jb and big w. But still nothing.

  • +1

Cancelled Pro order because no drives available.

  • -6

Just buy ps5 and use the disc drive from that. Eligible for free returns until January 31 2025. You will
    Buy one by then.

  • -3

it will be restocked soon. Keep an eye on the website, or try visiting a nearby jb/eb to inquire after Monday.

    • Which website?

    • How do you even know this or its just bs? lol or are you just guessing because pro is coming out in a week?

    • Whats your reasoning for this? How do you know?

  • Keep your eye out!
A mate that works at JB said stores are getting stock today and tomorrow.
He was able to secure one for me.
I'm sure other places should be getting stock too.

    • still nothing today.

      • My local JB got 4 units
Not selling online apparently, in store only and stores getting very few units per store

        • Just went to my local in Sydney as soon as they opened and got their one and only unit. Two staff members had no idea. Had to show them the website listing and they looked up the sku on their device.

        • Yep i got told all sold out their only for preorders. By jb. So none in stock

  • Check your Sony stores too. Managed to order one today for delivery early next week

    • Did you go instore to order or did you order online?

      • In store and they said they had like 4 at their warehouse. Didn't get much more information after they organised to have one delivered to me

  • +1

It's not just eBay scalpers. Price jack is already happening elsewhere. Amazon Germany wants $459.19 for it and i'm not kidding. And only 2 units in stock.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Disc-Drive-Digital-Consoles-Slim/d…

Amazon UK wants $452.45 for it and only 1 unit in stock.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0CMXL75GH/ref=ox_sc_ac…

Since when did Amazon become worse than the scalpers when it comes an incredible price jack on this stock?.

    • -1

I think it's more to do with currency conversion, duties, import taxes and GST than price hiking by Amazon.

      • -1

You're wrong. In the UK the RRP is £99.99 which after currency conversion is around $197 AUD. And then the import tax (and even shipping cost) won't account for the $255 dollars more. After all it's 10% gst. And yet Amazon UK currently wants $452.45 for it. As i said that amount of more money doesn't account for it.

        https://direct.playstation.com/en-gb/buy-accessories/disc-dr…

        • Woah, ease up on the aggression mate - I never said I was right, I said I think. Usually it is those factors that influence it … but you know what, just for you as it seems to have ruffled your feathers, I’ll send a message to customer support at Amazon UK and find out about the price and I’ll drop their response back for you.

          • -1

@djazza101: Come on children, play nicely

          • @djazza101: I apologise. Sorry that you mistook my statement as aggression. Just was saying that you were wrong.

And it plainly states sold by Amazon UK and shipped from Amazon UK. So it clearly points to Amazon UK itself in every way.

Also it's impossible to buy this drive at any Australian retailer at the moment. I tried today at Harvey Norman, Big W, EB Games and JB which are all sold out nation wide with no option to order. It's absolutely ridiculous. I gave up so i cancelled my PS5 Slim Digital console layby and i ordered a PS5 Slim Disc console on layby at Big W instead.

        • OK - so I managed to find someone who could shed some light onto this and this was what they stated (whether it is right or not, I'll have to take the customer support person's word for it that it is). Now this is a little complicated but does make sense.

So yes, it is shipped and sold by Amazon UK for us in Australia on our site. However, when tracked to Amazon UK, the stock is shipped by Amazon, but sold by someone else. So from Amazon UK (if you do it from their site), they do have a drive in stock that is shipped by Amazon but sold by a reseller. When you buy it from the UK site, the price they are selling it for and the conversion rate equals to what we see on Amazon AU … if not more.

So think of it as Amazon UK is completing the entire transaction when purchasing it from the AU site … but if you complete it from the UK site, then it'll be them shipping it and paying the seller for it.

          • @djazza101: ok that's weird because it plainly says:

            Ships from
            Amazon UK
            Sold by
            Amazon UK

Some shenanigans going on then. You can't buy some thing from seller Amazon UK through amazon.com.au and instead be sold to a third party marketplace seller. That's not how it works. The payment money goes direct to Amazon UK itself and it's Amazon UK own stock.

          • @djazza101: The customer support person was telling you total porkies. If it's says sold by Amazon UK and shipped from Amazon UK through the amazon.com.au online ordering system and then when ordered the sale doesn't be magically handed over to a third party seller in the UK. That makes no sense at all. Amazon AU and Amazon UK itself does not hand their orders over to a third party seller and send out stock sourced from a third party from their own order sales. It has their own order sales with their own stock. I can't believe how a person could think that makes any sense.

And about this comment "When you buy it from the UK site, the price they are selling it for and the conversion rate equals to what we see on Amazon AU … if not more."

I've got news for you. The Australian RRP for the Disc Drive for Digital console is $159 AUD as seen on the product page from Big W and JB Hi-Fi. It's sold out now but it still shows the $159 RRP.

            https://www.bigw.com.au/product/disc-drive-for-ps5-digital-e…

            https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/ps5-playstation-slim-disc…

So it should be $159 AUD on the Australian Amazon store if amazon.com.au had any stock. That's quite a big difference in price now isn't it. The price is no where near equal. Any thing higher than $159 AUD is nothing but a price jack due to a lack of stock availability and high demand. The Amazon UK price is $452.45 AUD but the Australian RRP of $159 which is a 293.45% difference higher in price. That's absolutely massive and no where near equal. If it was equal then the sold and shipped from Amazon UK price would be around $160 AUD + delivery. Not $452.45 AUD.

            • @hollykryten: I think the “comment” is referring to —- if you go to the Amazon UK website, it will show a GBP price that is equivalent to the $452.45 AUD price on Amazon AU, and not referring to being equal to the AU RRP.

              Both sites are overpriced though.

So I went to the UK site - I can see the product is sold by a 3rd party seller called “ItemWizard” for 249.99GBP plus 15.92GBP shipping fee to Australia - which is even higher than the $452.45 AUD price after conversion. Perhaps it will be equal if you remove VAT.

              https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CMXL75GH/ref=ox_sc_act…

              Also,

Perhaps if you were in the UK, the item will be handled and shipped to you by this “ItemWizard” scalper, but if you buy it from Australia, the whole process from packing to shipping is handled and managed by Amazon UK - perhaps that’s what it means when it says sold by and shipped from Amazon UK.

  • Jb hifi now showing “in store only”
And shows stock in the stores near me
