Spent the last 3 days chatting/ calling Krisflyer for codeshare flights to NZ. The system is a mess (and has been for the last 9 months at least).

Chat 1 - heaps of availability and listed 20 dates in the month (I found none). But they disconnected me straight away as I was responding (literally 20 seconds)
Chat 2 - Copy pasted the previous ops notes. They couldn't reproduce them. Found nothing. Tried different browsers, IP addresses, Incognito..found nothing. Tried the app. Saw them all again (basically a flight available everyday…heaps!).. But half way through booking got an error…and they were gone…
Call 3 - Suggested trying to wipe the app (data + cache). I saw them again. Went to the date I wanted…it was gone, as were all the others I just scrolled through. So called up, she couldn't see it.. then "tried something" and she could see it. But when I said let's book it…it was gone again and she couldn't book it.

Summary - Wasted 3 days with Krisflyer… not impressed at all….Might be just isolated to the Virgin/ AirNZ codeshare side of things.

But I also had an order via the Krisshop cancelled…My miles expired the day I placed the order (hence why I placed the order). So when they cancelled my order, the Miles just disappeared /expired. Escalation team had no interest.

So as per a recommendation from a member here, I pasted all correspondence on their FB page. A week later they had a change of heart and gave me one month to use my miles…. except I can't use them for the NZ flight I want to use them on…

Really dissapointed, as I expected KF to be like the Singapore Air experience

    • Can't you transfer KrisFlyer points to Velocity to avoid expiry? Or does this lose some of their value?

And if you want to use them again as KrisFlyer points, I think you can transfer them back.

      • +1

You lose points at 1.55:1 each time you transfer.

        • Ouch! Now I'm trying to figure out if both types of points have the same value, but of course that depends on how you spend them.

It doesn't help that may websites saying what points are worth, don't mention what currency they're valuing them with.

@Russ: Yeah, it all depends on where you intend to use them…and as I found out…can they really be used you have read on PointHacks.

I went with Krisflyer exclusively for their NZ codeshare product. Covid saw the end of that. But Krisflyer points only last 3 years, and they still haven't resume this leg and the 3 year window is up.

Velocity points don't expire, as long as you continue to earn or use them (easy to do with Flybuys etc). Velocity taxes can be a bit high though.

@tunzafun001: I second you on that mate. However It's very hard to get good velocity points to fly with airlines or redeem any items Today's world free grocery with points on Flybuys is a great option.

            • @tunzafun001: Thanks!

Here's some info I found, for anyone else wondering about the conversion rate.

This estimate of KrisFlyer Miles is from the website Nerdwallet.com, and Iโ€™ve changed their USD amounts to the equivalent AUD amounts:

For economy redemptions, the valuation was 1.7 cents each for close-in bookings 15 days before departure. Meanwhile, advanced purchase bookings offer 1.9 cents per mile. However, for holiday economy award flights, the valuation was much higher 3.0 cents per mile.

Finder.com.au has estimates and examples of the value of Velocity points:
              https://www.finder.com.au/frequent-flyer/velocity/virgin-velโ€ฆ

So looking at using 10,000 Krisflyer miles with Singapore Airlines, booking an advance economy ticket, those points are worth 190AUD.

Converting them to Velocity points gets 6451 Velocity points. Using the examples on the Finder page, those are worth between 63AUD (SYD-MEL) and 94AUD (MEL-Queenstown NZ) for booking economy flights.

@Russ: That table is the very ideal (and likely one person)

For example, the current cheapest MEL - Queenstown in economy is 30k points + $175 in taxes, for one person.

Chuck in a family of 4, and the cheapest is 138 000 points + taxes each!

Likewise, via Krisflyer it's 19500 points and $185 in taxes (but you can't actually get all the way to booking).

  • Any suggestions? I need a car and I need 300k points. No car sales partners lol
