August Cruise Booking Is Now $300 Cheaper - Anything I Can Do?

Hi, I booked a Royal Caribbean cruise for two people through Cruise Guru in August; it looked like rooms were booking out, so I jumped on it.

I paid in full approximately $4,000 using my credit card for an inside cabin on discount, however I've noticed the same cabin today is $3,700. I called to see if I could get the difference refunded or put on as room credit however, they have declined saying nothing can be done.

I'm not too familiar with fare bookings so wanted to see if anyone else had experience in this department? Do I just accept that I've overpaid and lost out by booking in advance, or should I be taking it further? I had a quick look through my credit card insurances (Westpac Altitude Black) but I don't think it covers change of price.

Appreciate any insight, cheers!

    Anything I Can Do?

    Cry. Or move on.

    • Cry first haha

      • Tell everyone you’ve moved on but then just cry for the rest of your life ;-)

This happens EVERY WEEK with supermarket specials

      Same with Airline tickets

Does OP go running into Coles or Woolworths the following week asking for the partial refund for any items purchased last week?

OMG Some people feel so entitled.

    • I called but the operator never mentioned the 48 hour thing. Such a bugger, it is what it is. Thanks for posting these links.

    • RCL Price Protection doesn't apply as they booked via a 3rd party.

that is why i always book direct to cruise line. saves the headache.

    Anything I can do?

    Yes, enjoy your cruise.

Happens all the time with flights and subsequent sales etc.

It's just what it is - either gamble that a sale will/may come up late on or get surety of the ticket early on.

LPT: Never look at prices ever again after a major purchase.

    • unless your credit card has price protection, probably wouldn't cover a cruise though.

  • You have not mentioned when is the actual cruise (and final payment date); though I assume the cruise being paid in full means it is past final payment. This is important as, based on the RCCL policy:

If it is past final payment, then there isn't much you can do except try to haggle for some other perk (they mention category upgrades in their FAQ if available). Seeing that cruise guru doesn't seem willing to bat for you here; maybe try contacting RCCL themselves directly.

If it is before final payment then RCCL should price match to themselves; do note that the agent rate and the cruise line's own rate may differ and RCCL will only match their own rate, not the agent rate AFAIK. I have had two rooms repriced twice with RCCL prior to sailing, for a cruise earlier this year; however I did not go through a travel agent.

The RCCL customer service team seemed pretty helpful and reasonable in my limited experience, worst they can do is say 'sorry nothing we can do'; probably worth a phone call.

  • It much recourse I’m afraid, it’s only $300 (or 10%), just don’t pay attention to price changes and enjoy your trip!

      $300 is 10% of $4000?

      Nice math… 😂

      • Oops misread and thought it was a $3k trip.

If it went up $300 and they asked you to pay it, would you?

Call and ask how much it would be to upgrade, you may find if he pricing has dropped for one category it may have for others and you could get a decent upgrade for not much more money.

    • Yeah this is what I would try next.

  • get your sea sick patch

  • RCCL policy is more favourable for US bookings, but not so here
