    Hi all,

Just a warning to anyone thinking about taking Hainan airlines: I flew with them recently on one of these China deals and they were some of the worst flights I have ever experienced.

All four planes were absolutely filthy, I have no idea how they’re a supposed 5 star airline as there was grime baked into the remote controls for the TV, the seat material was stained and tray tables were sticky on every single flight. The food was also inedible, I love plane food usually but this was the equivalent of dog food.

However, this was only the beginning of the problems I experienced. Upon landing in Haikou although our bags were supposed to be transferred through to Beijing, Hainan managed to mix up the baggage from two separate flights, which meant everyone from our flight was put into a security holding area at 3am in the morning while they manually checked every single bag and called forth passengers one by one to open their bags. After two hours of this, Hainan staff realised that everyone with the connecting flight to Beijing were about to miss it so ended up letting everyone out of the holding area without half the bags being checked, pointless!

My return flight from Shanghai then got cancelled for “company reasons” and we were put on an earlier flight back to Haikou which meant cutting our holiday short. However, that flight was then delayed by 7 hours and Hainan offered nothing such as food or drink vouchers. Even when I’ve flown with Jetstar and Vietjetair they’ve given some airport vouchers for food when there’s been a delay (which has been quite often lol) but Hainan were not helpful at all.

When I asked about changing to another flight due to the cancellation of the first leg Hainan said they do not code share internationally and I would have to wait for four days if I wasn’t happy with the replacement flight as they only fly to Sydney on Saturdays and Tuesdays.

I absolutely love a good cheap flight but after my experience I would warn people against going with Hainan. It’s not worth putting up with the filthy planes, the disorganisation and the lack of assistance when something goes wrong.

Thanks for sharing. I typically avoid any layover at all, if necessary then I would choose layover less than 3-4hrs. Any issues will eat into your scheduled holiday time or return schedule.

A sub$500 flight to China/Asia cities is too good to warrant a quality flight to be true..

I think previous HNA group airlines are a special case as when they were rated well was when the company was running alright.

I think this experience above sounds like part of the down grade that most often happens after an issue with the company. If in doubt I would look at recent trip report videos before flying.

Had a similar problem with China Eastern recently as August.

Domestic flights within China are often delayed due to a lot of airspace is closed and reserved for the military. Then there is weather issues (monsoon rain around southern China), play pretend there is air traffic quota / delays or they just can't sell all their tickets on scheduled flights so delay it until they can shuffle everyone from 3 to 2 flights (yes they are really bad at scheduling for people who are good at math).

Domestic China flights there won't be flight delay compensation because they think they have a captive customer base (who else you going to fly?) and most of the major airlines are owned by the Chinese government.

  • i see some of those are 30 hours for 1 way

    • Or they get you to Guangzhou at 1am. What are you going to do at 1am? Look for a night club with a good cloak room that can hold your luggage.
