My recommendation is to stick to the Woolies Brand weetbix. The Sanitarium range now have a few added ingredients including sugar as of about 12 months ago.

Thanks. Good info. I stick to weetbix because of the iron content

        • Curious to know if the 25% DI of Iron per serving is true. I'll explain why.

I eat 2x wheet bix with my cereal every morning, inc. Oats, Chia, fresh seasonal berries, few sultanas all with Almond milk.

My Blood test results Iron shows 396 (Ferritin?) which is above what it should be; 30-300. Doctor recommended I eat less red meat. I also told him I eat wheet bix every morning and he said it's not so much the Wheet bix but more so the Red meat. I told him, "but the box shows 2x wheet bix = 25% Daily intake if Iron". He said, "I doubt the body will be absorbing that much iron every day". He also mentioned that taking Vitamin C as supplements helps with iron absorption. I was taking 1000mg BIO C with my multis after breakfast so that may have impacted my iron levels?

Curious to know if 25% DI of iron is actually true from a serving (2 pieces) of Wheet bix.

@gezza90: This Healthdirect advice on haemochromatosis (a condition involving excess iron in your body) suggests:

            • avoiding iron-containing supplements
            • avoiding vitamin C supplements, as these increase iron absorption in your intestine
            • avoiding breakfast cereals containing added iron
            • @Chris T: Correct. I was doing 2/3 of those. I decided to take vitamin C later on in the day or before bed, and cut out some of the red meat and I am down to 320 which is a good sign but still above what it should be. Every now and then I also eat 1x Wheet bix instead of 2x so that is indeed helping.

              Thanks for confirming.

          • @gezza90: So you’re eating too much red meat because it can’t be the wheetbix because your body wouldn’t be absorbing the iron from your diet so it must be from the red meat you eat…. DR Doesn’t sound like the brightest bulb in the shed !!!

            • @CommuterPolluter: From what I gather, it's a combination of of red meat, wheet bix and anything else with iron. Before the blood test I was eating more than my fair share of kangaroo meat, beef roast, lentils and taking Vitamin C right after Wheetbix brekky.. I now replaced my red meat protein with other alternatives with less iron like tuna, salmon, chicken etc. and opting for meals with less portions like Chicken soup, small can tuna with avocado and rice, Fetta Revioli and the likes.

Doctor's advice was actually on point. I made these changes and over the course of 3 months my iron level dropped from 390 to 330.

Absorption seems to be way less than what is eaten

Overall, sugar content seems fairly low across the board? Personally I'm happy to stick with Weet-Bix

      • I would still need to add a bucket load of sugar to ferment the weet-bix out.

      • @solidice

The woolies one is identical to vitawheats. It wouldnt surprise me if they come out of the same manufacturing plant.

Weetbix ingredient has never changed and has always been wheat, sugar plus vitamins.

Aldi brand is very similar to weetbix except it is
missing one of the vitamins (I think it's folic acid like Coles brand)

      • For what it’s worth, they are all made by Sanitarium.

    • I do the same although it’s pretty much negligible. Shredded wheat is the best but so overpriced.

    • Also by sticking to woolworths your not supporting a religious organisation.

      • There is no Woolworths factory though, it's still produced by the same company with a different box/label.

Love these with a coating of honey dipped in milk.
