AliExpress Android Auto Headunit Suggestion

Hi OZB,

I am looking for a headunit for my corolla 2014, hoping to add a reverse camera with this upgrade.

I have a couple of question as I am very new to this so bare bear with me.

  1. Are headunit universal?

  2. What is a cambus, do I need one?

  3. Can I fit one without a facial plate? (can't seem to find one for right hand drive)

If you have experience with installing one please share it with me. Thanks.

    1. The majority of head unit found on AliExpress are just Android Devices running Android Auto/Apple CarPlay App. Some come with cable kit for specific models or requires you to splice your own cables.
    2. Depending on the car/model, some may require a CANBUS for the car to communicate with the head unit.
    3. Some original head unit can be 'modified' to fit an aftermarket head unit, but it generally easy to install with a facial plate. If you look hard enough on AliExpress, you can generally find both LHD and RHD facial plate (ie. this listing). Also if you contact a seller, that sells headunit they generally have both (but you'll have to pay extra).

I've installed two units in the past, and I highly recommend watching a bunch of YouTube Video before deciding if you are ready to install a headunit.

    • Some come with cable kit for specific models or requires you to splice your own cables

Most come with and ISO connector that you just but an ISO to [insert your car here] adapter from super cheap auto for $30… No splicing needed - it's basically plug and play,

I've installed three and they are all going great - better than expected amplifiers and good over quality.

  • Its only a corolla. Its not that far to the other side of the head unit. Having LHD model probably wont make aany difference.

Probably something like this will do the job. just make sure it's the RHD version that matches your fascia plate. I also wouldn't go for a dirt cheap one, i did once and was forever regretting not spending another $50-$100 for a faster one with more ram and memory.

For installation generally youtube is your best bet on where to find the clips/screws to disassemble.

Canbus is usually Euro car specific so shouldn't have to worry about it.

There will be a Corolla iso adapter that can be purchased either on aliexpress or may come with the headunit, literally just a plug and play affair with the antenna to be screwed in.

I have installed Eonon branded Android 2 DIN one (still works well) for my dad's 2011 Lancer (CG/CH in here) in 2016 or so. It came with ISO connector and I bought ISO to Mitshubishi adapter cable as well, so no splicing and everything is stock.

The original one in car was 1 DIN and I had to get a faceplate to change AC control locations. I ordered everything from Amazon US. I simply swapped all stickers from LHD to RHD to suit us.

CANBUS is a communication protocol used in almost all cars to communicate to ECUs and other components. In your case, it might be used to control radio if you have steering wheel controls for radio etc.

    Are headunits universal?

Not all of them, but mostly.

A 2014 Corolla will uses a 2 DIN standard (4" x 8") and any 2 DIN replacement unit will bolt straight into it.

What is a cambus, do I need one?

CAN bus is a digital communications standard used in cars - it allows data to be shared between electronic modules scattered around the vehicle. Some head units can access this communications protocol to read and display vehicle related information (GPS location, vehicle speed etc)

As far as I can tell, the stock 2014 Corolla head unit does not use CAN bus and you don't need it.

Can I fit one without a facial plate? (can't seem to find one for right hand drive)

Yes - it just might not be a super clean-looking install. However, since your new and old head units both use the same 2 DIN form factor, it should be pretty close to stock without using an adaptor.

Definitely don't get the very cheapest Android-based head units, they're slow and clunky and you will quickly regret cheaping out. If you want a really clean result that's easy to install, you can buy complete plug-and-play kits that include a head unit all the adaptors that you need, including steering wheel controls, for about $350. Suggest 4GB RAM as an absolute minimum.

Something like this, which also includes a reversing camera: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/387429353862
