81

For anyone that needs a year of cheap cloud storage @ 5TB. Perhaps someone needs to find a way to churn this as well?

Also 50% off for first year on their IDrive e2 S3 compatible cloud storage. 1TB @ $24.75 USD (~$36.05). This works with Rclone.

Rate based on today's MasterCard rate.

"The 90% offer is applicable for the first year only. 90% offer is valid only if you are currently using a paid competing cloud backup service. You need to provide proof of your existing paid service provider’s account. Competing services include Carbonite, Mozy, CrashPlan, Backblaze, SOS Online Backup, Dropbox, iCloud and Google Backup and Sync.

The special discount offer applies only to the plans listed here. Upgrading to a higher storage plan will negate the promotional pricing, and the full price of the higher plan needs to be paid."

ALL cloud storage has privacy issues, just be aware.

If you're worried about privacy, you use rclone and set up client side encryption.

      • +1

Is this hard to do? I’ve heard of this as a solution but as a layman it goes over my head

        • I wrote a guide which was used in the OP of this thread: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/868528
If you want something more to the point, just look at rclone's documentation: https://rclone.org/crypt/

Basically any cloud storage with an open API will have rclone support, and if it has rclone support, you can create an encrypted remote on the cloud storage, which is basically like an encrypted folder.

The benefit of client side encryption is that you are the one generating the encryption on your computer, so not even the cloud provider can see what you're storing, nor do they have the decryption keys. Some companies don't like it when users do this though, like in the deal I linked above (Microsoft OneDrive). One of the accounts I made got disabled for "violating terms of service", which is almost certainly because I uploaded a few gigs of encrypted data.

I used IDrive Backup a couple years back and uploaded a few terabytes of client-side encrypted data. They never disabled my account.
          IDrive >>> OneDrive.

          [edit]
As the other commenter replying to me pointed out, this deal is for IDrive Backup and not IDrive e2, so it doesn't support rclone.
You can still set up client-side encryption using the IDrive Software to mount your cloud storage, then Cryptomator to create an encrypted vault: https://cryptomator.org/

      • Does rclone suppore iDrive cloud drive?

I thought rclone only supported iDrive e2

        • +1

I thought rclone only supported iDrive e2

You would be correct. This deal is only for IDrive Backup, which means you will have to use the IDrive Software to interface with your storage.

That being said, you can still configure client-side encryption. The IDrive Software allows you to mount your storage in Windows Explorer. You can then create a Cryptomator Vault or a Veracrypt Container in it, and store all your data through that. This is exactly what I did in 2022 when trialing IDrive and it worked fine. Unlike OneDrive, they won't disable your account for uploading encrypted data.

    • Last I bothered checking, there are providers like SpiderOak which exist to counter this.

    • Idrive allow you to use a client side encryption key - but yes its a valid point in general

Since I am only backing up my PrOn collection, I do not mind privacy. Even happy to share the link.

        Share us the link! 😉

    • right, everything electronic has privacy issues, why the neg?

and there is this thing called encryption which helps negate that.

I've used this deal for the past 3 years, it used to be about $3-4 USD. No complaints, does what it says on the box.

    • +2

Is it easy to transfer from one account to another new account to get the deal again?

      • No. There are 3rd party services but you have to pay for them. I don't want to do that.

I have about 1.5TB of data, a local copy always sits on my PC so a few days before my iDrive account expires I just create a new one and re-upload everything. It takes 2-3 days of leaving PC on 24x7, but that's cheaper than paying $80 USD per year. I'm on 1000/50.

    • Do you use it for backup/archiving, or do you regularly download from it? How is performance?

      • I use it mostly for the sync function uploading photos. No complaints on performance, download speeds are fine as well.

    • coming up to the end of my first year using this. Good for archiving but very slow and cumbersome accessing files on my phone. Looking for alternatives that are better in this regard but if I can't find it then I'll have to use this deal again. Not looking forward to moving all my files to the separate account though - it's going to take ages.

Not a fan of these guys, their software kinda sucks and their backup seems slow.
I’ve had much better experience with MEGA that’s available via turkey iTunes.

    • How much is MEGA?

      • MEGA are a great adjective for their pricing

      • Free for the first 15gb.

  • Anyone know first-hand if Duplicacy is compatible OOTB?
Supports iDrive e2 from memory. I have a dead M/B so can't check atm

OP might want to add the fine print:

"The 90% offer is applicable for the first year only. 90% offer is valid only if you are currently using a paid competing cloud backup service. • Yeah they are a bit slippery.

Very ballsy of a business to list all of it's competitors to a prospective customer.

      • Yes and no… It's pretty assumed by that point that you've committed to signing up. But if you were smart enough to to read the fine print, you get one part slap in the face and one part piece of candy - and one very good look at how this current business strategy is being implemented, used etc.

In short, a bucket load of people are signing up, getting very frustrated and won't be back. But hey, it's business and money that they didn't have before. Must've hired a new BDM or something 😂

    • Thanks for the suggestion. Added!

Just buy a HDD and plug it into your home router and use that as your cloud storage. Or if you've got a spare HDD laying around collecting dust, just use that.

    • +1

If I wanted cloud storage… Maybe. But I wouldn't use any of these services for general cloud storage. If I'm paying money for a service, it's for more than convenience. It's called offsite data backup. A necessity in any data storage system… Also, no single USB HDD would serve my needs for this purpose anyway, even if I wanted to break all the DR rules and self host my cloud backup

    • So a nas?

How about security when exposing that to the internet? You know what ports to open/VPN to use?

How fast is your nbn upload speed? Trying to watch a 4k home video outside your lan? Good luck

      • +1

To be put simply, a NAS, yes.

There's no security to worry about, because it is not exposed to the internet, there is 0 need. Yes I do know how to perform it all completely and entirely securely of I needed to do so.

My upload speed is more than sufficient to deal with transferring my daily delta overnight when it's not in use.

I don't tend to stream 4k home videos outside my LAN during my cloud backup deduplication hours. However I would personally guarantee that 1. The stream would be exactly the same & 2. My backup deduplication will still be completed.

So, other than attempting to reign supreme over my setup with things you clearly know nothing about, where exactly are you going with this comment? Aside from the usual themes of passive aggression, attempted belittling, more whining, complaining and blaming the world for their inability to cooperate in synchonicity with it.

Do you have have a specific problem that you would like to have resolved. (I can't count how many times I've said this in these subs) but wouldn't the time you spend being a nuisance be better spent working out how to attend to whatever your gripes are?

        • Relax your undies, I wasn't replying to you

    • Just buy a HDD and plug it into your home router and use that as your cloud storage.

Faark, don't do that. Unless you really know what you're doing, it's one of the most common ways to compromise your home network. Probably secondly only to allowing WAN side management console access and running default admin passwords.

I've got something like this running, but it's on a segregated network, dedicated disposable hardware, and runs several layers of additional security. And it's certainly not plugged into some shithouse Netgear/TPLink home router.

Has anyone paid for this deal? How did you go about 'providing proof of your existing paid account'? An invoice copy? .. just not sure how much info they want is all

    • Hi,

Thank you for signing up with IDrive!

To move forward with your new account we'll need one of the following to verify your existing service providers' account as you move your important data to IDrive.

An email showing communication with them (Account registration, account updates, etc.)
Screenshot of your account with the existing service provider showing your username and/or email

Send the above details to [email protected]. If you have any further questions please contact IDrive support.

      Regards,
      The IDrive Team

I thought it was for their S3 like service and signed up by mistake

    • That's not good… sorry if you were confused… I did link to their S3 one in the post which is more expensive.. hope they either refunded you or you can make use of it

      • all good. $10 is a cheap lesson.
It did make me look at their e2 service again. Which seems to have gotten better.

        • I'm glad. Hopefully it can be used then!

  • do you know where are they hosting the data?

more for latency than privacy etc, could be a good backup for a backup deal

  • When I had it the upload speeds were so atrociously slow it would have taken over a year to upload a terabyte. I stopped using it well before by subscription ran out.

  • So this is for the E2 service
    Transferred: 2.138 GiB / 2.138 GiB, 100%, 2.855 MiB/s
    Elapsed time: 10m32.9s

    Compared to dropbox
    Transferred: 2.138 GiB / 2.138 GiB, 100%, 3.635 MiB/s,
    Elapsed time: 8m54.9s

    • That doesn't seem too bad.. bit over 1.5 min per GB more.. or 12.5 hours per TBish

      • eh, it's about 2 hours difference in my 150gb weekly backup upload
