Is R7-7800X3D Okay for Programming and Productivity or Should Go with an Intel Build?

I am planning to make a gaming PC with R7-7800X3D and RTX 4070 Ti Super.

Games that I will play: Ghost of Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-Man Remastered, God of War, Starfield, Call of Duty. Resolution: 1440p. Software I am going to run: vs-code, multiple browser windows, several local servers, docker and also occasionally editing photos on Adobe Photoshop and editing videos on Adobe Premiere

R7-7800X3D is recommended best for gaming, but how is it going to work for programming and running above apps?

Should I go with some other AMD processor Or should I go with i7 14700KF? But It has power and heating issues?

  • If you'll be doing any gaming I'd probably recommend the 7800X3D just because it's such a powerhouse. I'm sure it smashes some benchmarks too. Look up a vid comparing that and the i7-14700KF and compare their prices.

So you're going to be programming in an era where AI is becoming an important factor in both writing the code, and running the software because new processors will increasingly have an NPU, and you're not going to get hardware with one?

AI can't even recognise Ronald McDonald.

  • 9800x3d is coming out in about 1 month

  • For productivity, more cores is better.

I have a 13900K for productivity, upgraded from 5600x, never been so happy :) But beware about silicon issues with 13th & 14th gen CPUs. Can't recommend Intel CPUs due to this issue, but I don't have that issue and it works great. Anyway, I think X3D in AMD won't help much for productivity workloads.

Unless you need multiple GPUs running at full speed (get a threadripper for the PCI-E lanes), either will be fine.

Recently, CPUs from both brands have been killing themselves though. AMD catching on fire, Intel burning themselves out:

    AMD: https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/27/23700688/amd-ryzen-7000-x…

    Intel: https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/processors/intel-cpu-crashe…

So make sure you update the bios immediately.
