-Experiment- MyMacca's App Dynamic/Target Pricing Is Getting Crazy!

I know many people here are well aware of the mymaccas app dynamic/target pricing, this post isn't for you. This post is for the uninitiated who are not sure why their prices on the app are different to others, especially when comparing it to other targeted deals shown here on OZB. Simply put, it's dynamic or target pricing.

Dynamic/Target pricing is where they can change the prices on offer to you, this can be driven by a number of factors. i.e. location, time of purchase, supply and demand or in maccas case your personal usage of the app.

The reason why I'm posting this is because just this morning my partner and I looked at our apps (craving some chicky nuggy), We assumed the prices would be different, but didn't think the difference would be as large as we found.

The Deal we were looking at was 20pc McNuggets & Mcflurry

Phone #1: This is the phone we usually use for maccas orders. We maybe order once a fortnight in it's peak (order is rarely above $10), however usual usage is once a month. 90% of the time orders made through this phone are discount deals the app offers, however just 2 weeks ago we placed a full price order for hotcakes.
Phone #2: This phone RARELY gets used to place a maccas order, it's been atleast 4 months since we used it for an order. In the odd occasion this phone gets used, 100% of it's time it's been the purchase of a discount deal the app offers

Both phones have the following in common:
- Same household
- Same Maccas location that the food is ordered from
- Same bank account, but different debit card is associated with each account
- Both accounts were made at the same time (about 2-3 years ago)
- Deal & screenshots looked at at the same time on the same day
- Not sure if it matters, but both are the same generation of samsung android phone (but different model)

Phone #1 price: $15.99 (~78% more expensive)
Phone #2 price: $8.99

Happy to see if you have similar experiments and what the pricing shows. doesn't need to be in relation to the mymaccas app.

    Dynamic pricing or targeted offer?

    • Could be targeted offer as that would make more sense that the newer user got the bigger discount.

      • rhetorical question. dynamic pricing is on regular menu items. OP is just mad McDonald's has labelled them as repeat customer

        • don't know how you got the interpretation I'm "mad". Just showing people how big the price gap can get.

@whitepuma: did you not write a whole essay?

          • +5

@whitepuma: I wrote the post yes…just because I got into detail doesn't mean I'm mad. I'm interested by it

      • Both users got the app and accounts at the same time. It's less driven by how new the account is, and more driven by the usage of it.

24pc McNuggets is cheaper than 20pc McNuggets

Agree, this is more of a targeted offer, see the expires in 2 days bit, than dynamic pricing. If it was dynamic pricing, then lots of other prices would be different. Not just a single promo.

What’s the usual price of you two example? It’s not clear if one is a discount over usual, or if the other is a jacked price over usual.

Side note, neither of you links to photos seem to be working, for me at least…

And the best way to combat this is, stop giving maccas all your personal details and letting them track you. Uninstall the app, stop eating their over priced crap and go elsewhere.

    • Hard to say actual price because not usually done as a deal. But I can find their seperate prices.

    • Photos working for me, but I'll let someone else confirm.

Regardless, photos aren't that interesting, it's just screenshot evidence of those prices

Ok. My iPad and phone were redirecting to to the app. When unopened it on my PC without the app, they work.

    • And also, agree, that is the best way to combat it

you could also keep making new accounts and take advantage of new customer offers.
haven't used the app in a while so unsure if that still works

This is not new. A lot of businesses use targeted offers, Woolworths, Flybuys, Shopback, Cashrewards, etc. That's why I have an account for each person in my household. I don't think it has to do with when you created your account or device, but more your purchase history.

      …nobody said it was new

If they know that phone 1 user is already thoroughly addicted to the chicken nuggers, why give them a steep discount? If the owner of phone 2 hasn't proven their addiction yet, then better to give a large discount to tempt them.

  • Never open the Maccas app until the time you want to buy something. Checking the app is what triggers a lot of lower quality offers.

Yeah this is just targeted offer at different values, it is most definitely not the full price lol from the usual menu

  • Can you post the results from your other 5 accounts?

    • I'm not understanding you

It is mandatory for all Ozbargainers to have a few McDonalds accounts to cycle through for deals before making a purchase.

        • Yeah I'm not that commited to Macca's.

I'm probably better off them lifting prices on me as it will deter me from using it

  • Definitely think there is a difference between targeted offers and true dynamic pricing. Nothing surprising here, you got different offers due to different usage.

  • I almost never buy maccas, maybe 3 times a year, almost always only offers. In my experience, the more you use the offers the worse they get. The offers are basically a way of trying to reel you or get you hooked and then the offers dry up. They are basically not for loyalty customers.

If they worried more about putting the correct shit in the bag instead of dynamic or targeted pricing, maybe they wouldn't have to resort to devaluing their product even lower than the minute value it already carries by consumers after decades of steady increases of pricing with decreases in quality and appeal.

Last time I went there, I got an app deal and extra full priced fries. They left out the fries. I contacted via the online process which requested an upload of receipt which functionality did not allow. Too much hard work for no much gains. I'll do without their shit food and shittier app ordering.
