Day 3 Not Seeing Post in RSS Reader

Using RSS Guard, I am now into day 3 with both Ozbargain RSS feeds not being able to fetch feeds.

The same issue happened a few times recently, but the problem usually disappears before a lot of time lapses. I have no problems with other subscribed feeds.

Feeds and errors:

OzBargain | New Deals, Coupons, Vouchers and Freebies
Status: network error (access to the content was denied)
Source: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/feed
Item ID: 16
Encoding: UTF-8
Type: RSS 2.0/2.0.1

OzBargain | Front Page Deals
Source: https://www.ozbargain.com.au//feed
Item ID: 26
Encoding: utf-8
Type: RSS 2.0/2.0.1

  • Yo, just thought I'd chime in and say that my rss feeds are working fine.

Are you able to load the rss feeds manually in a web browser?

Also note that the second link there has a double slash in it - this is the correct url: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/feed

Status: network error (access to the content was denied)

That means it got blocked either by us or by CloudFlare. We have been blocking some IP addresses that are "too aggressive" (e.g. keep on hitting the request throttling limit accessing the similar URLs multiple times a second). We have also turned in some anti-bot measure on CloudFlare.

Basically if RSS works for others but not you, then your IP (or your RSS fetcher's IP) is likely to be blocked.

    • I hope my IP isn’t too aggressive I would hope it is very polite

So, nothing I can do and nothing you can do without reducing site security.

      • What you can do: stop using RSS services that flood the site with requests.

        • How?

I'm not sure if this is all that applies, but my setting Autofetch is now set to '15 minutes and 1 second(s)' via RSS 2.0.

        • All good today. If you intervened, thank you. If not, maybe CloudFlare found they have a problem???

  • Just thought I'd share my experience with OzBargain's RSS feeds. For the last few days my favourite PC based RSS reader has stopped working completely on the four feeds from here that I'm subscribed to. All the other sites I use still work fine, and a significant number of these sit behind CloudFlare as well. Just tried a different application that works fine but unfortunately I'm not a fan of the UI. So, side by side on the same PC, using the same IP address, one program works and one does not. As far as I can tell we're in the realms of over enthusiastic user agent blocking and CloudFlare trying to ram a CAPTCHA down the throat of a program that shouldn't have to deal with one. IMHO it seems that it's the CloudFlare settings for this site that are way too aggressive. Can you please revisit your settings and dial down the blocking a little. Thank you.

  • I can use ozb feeds in Feedly app. Very easy to add more feeds. No problem.

    • There are a lot of ozb topics that I prefer not to see. Does Feedly have filters?

      • In Feedly app, when I tap + (Add content) and type OzBargain, there are a lot of OzBargain feeds that can be added. Just add any OzBargain feeds that you want.

        • Thanks. I've done some testing. The free version doesn't have a filter. You need Pro+ for that. Via AI, look for Mute. I'm not prepared to pay $8.93 per month to test it.

  • Not the ideal workaround, but ozb feed are now loaded into QuiteRSS and feeds are working as expected.

QuiteRSS has an excellent filter. The down-side is:

    "Warning
Heavily based on QtWebKit, a dependacy deprecated since 2022 due to several critical security issues. QuiteRSS has slowly been abandoned since then."
