The whole idea of this mechanic makes my stomach turn - gambling for the sake of digital nonsense that isn't buying creative work in the form of an expansion to a game or DLC? The definition of rentseeking even if the 'cost' is corporate engagement rather than $ directly to avoid gambling laws.

Just download Cheat Engine and assign yourself infinite keys, you own your machine, not them.

I honestly hadn't considered that perspective in this specific context.

Well, it's just plain wrong. The codes don't cost anything. They are just another way to promote the game.

        • -2

They don't cost money, no, because they wanted to avoid the pending loot box legislation which was a hot news topic when it was first introduced. But they do cost engagement - follow this twitter feed, give up data to this 'free' competition, etc. etc. Corporate nonsense over nothing more than incrementing a number. Again, just increment it yourself, there's no need to engage with this crap.

@Parentheses: You need to get out more and you need more hobbies.

    • I'm sorry, my English is limited, what exactly is 'gambling' about it?

      • -1

Digital loot boxes are a form of gambling because you are trading for something uncertain (also usually the odds are against you). It's like playing the poker machine just not with real money but with the time invested/other resources.

How is this bad, especially when it's free?
Are mystery boxes you can buy online gambling too? Mystery bags you can buy at Chemist warehouse are gambling too?
How soft is this world these days….

          • @nikoris: It's not the gambling that is the core issue, though gambling itself is something I'd be happy to ban as a side thing.

It's the fact that the 'reward' is something of no concrete value and represents no contribution from the company, but they still expect things in return, and try to 'gate' those rewards when they are something the end user should control, not the company. It's the same issue as 'freemium' mobile games, or P2W.

@Parentheses: Honestly, you're just barking at the tree. 'Lucky bags' have been around since forever, are those 'p2w'? Freemium?
How can you even complaint about Borderland keys lmfao

              • @nikoris: The reward from a lucky bag are tangible things that require resources to produce. The fact it's like a gateway drug for gambling (which is one of this country's worst problems) is a side issue.

The 'reward' from giving that all-important engagement to Gearbox in their social media platforms (gotta get those ad clicks) is that a variable in your computer or console goes up by one. That's the key issue far more than the gambling. That's my variable, on my machine, and I'll decide if I want it to go up, not some corporate suit.

@Parentheses: How are you comparing pokies and borderlands lmfao
I'll call everyone i know, tell them to not grab those keys! Our variables are in danger!!

    • You can not edit the keys if you in console

      • -1

Not on the console itself, but save editing for console games is a thing. Corporate lockdowns being a fantastic reason to play things on PC instead anyway.
