CCP is going to ruin our airlines industry. Qantas profit must not drop

      • +8

Qantas already pulled out of the Mainland Chinese market and has significantly reduced the Hong Kong market post covid.

The only real threat that Mainland Chinese airlines pose is their cheap services from China to Europe, these flights are often carry cargo and sell the passenger cabin as a bonus which is how they can lower prices significantly in both Economy and Business (tried out China Eastern from SIN-AMS via PVG for only $1,239 in Business), and on top of that those airfares are most likely subsidized by the CCP which leads to lower costs.

However the customer demographic who travels Qantas versus the traveler demographic that flies China Southern, Air China ect is vastly different. Australian Government employees, Australian companies, other company employees with contractual agreements with Qantas, travelers willing to spend more to fly a premium carrier, those who are apart of Qantas Frequent Flyer or Oneworld and other groups tend to fly with Qantas.

The only flow on effect is that it could lower pricing of seats on other carriers which Qantas directly competes with (Singapore Airlines, Qatar, Emirates (although thats locked into QF), Cathay Pacific, JAL and others) and thus lowering prices. But dont worry, those load factors on QF9/10/33/34/5/6 and QF1/2 are all in the high 90%s.

The great circle route to Paris comes very close to China Southern's Guangzhou. Plus they can shortcut over Russia. Middle Eastern airlines are actually a bit of a detour.. especially once you factor in the tricky routing in the Middle East right now..

          http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=syd-cdg

The other issue is massive drop in both inbound and outbound tourist traffic from China. Which means they have to cut prices to fill their planes.

          • @Thrawn: I ever so partially disagree with you on routing, as Chinas airspace is so heavily controlled by the military leaving really narrow corridors for commercial traffic, often leading to delays. The middle east is very well timed with connections in the 2-3 hour range versus the 6-24+ hour transit times through China.

          • @Thrawn: True. Surprised that SYD-CAN-CDG is 10,551 miles whilst direct SYD-CDG is 10,527. Considering in real world there is no direct flight to Paris from Sydney, the shortest route is possibly via Guangzhou or Hong Kong.

        • It will be interesting to see which carrier Australians choose if CZ joins Oneworld (only rumoured so far). While I wouldn't rate them as high as CX (or even QF), I can see many business travellers choosing them if they can get their QF points/credits.

          • +2

@jeppetto367: China Southern will not join Oneworld, Starlux (Taiwanese) is more posied at the moment to join Oneworld, they have publicly stated that they are looking into joining OW as China Airlines is with Skyteam and EVA Air is with Star Alliance.

It will most likely occur after Cathay Pacific leaves Oneworld in 2025/2026

        • "The only flow on effect is that it could lower pricing of seats on other carriers which Qantas directly competes with (Singapore Airlines, Qatar, Emirates (although thats locked into QF), Cathay Pacific, JAL and others) and thus lowering prices. Lost me there. QF is no match. To be frank, the latest flights in J across QF and a few Asian carrier, QF was average at best. Flew China Southern - service can be mechanical, but food was much better, and free overnight hotel at the Hyatt. All our colleagues stop flying QF (and BA) altogether for both business and personal J fares, unless QF is the most direct option.

imagine thinking that the ccp cares about your little budget airline flight to eu

      • They do, its all about obtaining market share and increasing local tourism through long layovers that are in this deal and previously, free 24/72/144 hour visas play into this.

The CCP controls these airlines (State Owned Enterprises) and can help subsidies their operations through lowered airport tax, no fuel excise, pay their overflight fees to Russia and can increase money supply to these companies even if they are operating them at a loss. And this is the case if you break down the taxes in the GDS using a program like ExpertFlyer, the only taxes being incurred are those in Europe, $0 on the China end.

Who gives a shit if they are safe, and cheaper.

  • Hey All, does anyone know how to subscribe to receiving deals to my email? Been trying to find return tickets from London/Berlin to Brisbane. They’re always far more expensive than going the other way.. not sure if that’s normal or I’m just missing deals

  • If only similar deals from Perth are available..
