I wish an Airtag cost the same

    • -1

Sincere question since I've never considered one… what would be the main difference other than iOS compatibility?

      • +4

Difference compared to what exactly? The iOS ecosystem is significantly larger than others (country dependent) which allows you to track your device/items more easily.

      • Airtag has other iPhones using their network/system to give you more chance of reporting your item's location if it is not in your house.

I have Airtag for my pets, and Tile Mate for my keys/wallet which will usually be close to the house or in the car, so the broad coverage out of my home is not as required.

But dogs/cats can escape and be up the street etc, and the Airtag will have better chance of telling you where they are/were.

      very cool

You can find generic smart tag that works with 'Apple Find My' network on AliExpress for <A$10.

Obviously not the same quality and features as Apple AirTag.

      • +1

Interesting, didn't think Apple would allow other companies to register them on the network

      • Do the missing features from the no-name tags actually matter?

        • +4

I believe the generic tag doesn't have the Precision Finding feature.

      • +9

don't bother, i purchased a few different aliexpress tags, they are all trash.
battery dies fast and you have to be near it to find it. the alarm that goes off is very weak.

        • +1

          Fair enough.

I haven't actually tried them myself, as I'm an Android/Samsung user.

      • +1

If the other tags are not of the same quality and lack the same features, then what is your point?

        • Just an option for anyone looking for a basic tracker that works on 'Apple Find My' network and not willing to pay Apple AirTag prices.

    • -1

just go the comparable ones on aliexpress, then even cheaper

    • +3

I have 5 of these ones from Amazon and they're fantastic. Beep is loud enough to be heard from far away, and work flawlessly with Find My.

I prefer these over the Apple ones.

Got these after our car was stolen.
As they're less precise than the Apple ones, makes it harder for a thief to find them in our cars. Also removed the speakers to make them harder to find.
The hole makes them easier to put on a key-ring or our dog's collar.
Off-button is good for ones we use occasionally.

        • Will it still alert the thief they are being tracked? I guess this is why you remove the speaker?

          • @Krazyy: Ideally the thief detects the tag is there - and doesn't break into the car.
If they break in - they cant find it and decide not to steal the car.
Steal the car - they get tracked.

With the Apple, ones I gather the precision makes it easier for a thief to find.

        • Can someone explain why you need to remove the speakers?? If you don’t activate the “play sound” function wont it just stay silent even when tracking on “Find my”. How does removing the speakers prevent thieves from finding a hidden tracker in your car, or another way of asking, how to thieves activate the sound on the tracker to locate them? Thanks

          • +1

@Rscit: They periodically play a sound after they have been out of range of the registered owners device for a certain amount of time. This is done to alert people that they are there in case someone is trying to use it to stalk.

      • So it works even if bluetooth is out of range? How far have you tested? Thanks!

        • +2

Yes. Other iPhones detect it and report the location through the Find My Network.

      • These are super easy to take the speaker out of too. Great for hiding in your bike or car.

Had these from previous deal. Great quality, I use mine for my dog's harness :D

    • +1

on the collar? what kind of dog? does it not come off?

      • +2

I purchased a silicone holder made for collars from Etsy. Have been using for about 2 years and it's never come off. Likely will depend on dog breed and behaviour.

        • Right, a holder made for collars is one thing but this Belkin unit's a sprung clip-on job

      • +1

harness. pawezy no pull harness, n9ot directly on the neck but on the side straps. It doesn't come off and it hasn't come off. Clip is pretty secure. I have a toy poodle.

      • +1

        Depends on the animal too.

We have three different cats with silicone holders. Two of them never an issue. The third one manages to scratch and pull at the silicone and has broken a couple, and her air tag has fallen out a couple of times.

    • wouldnt the air tag rust being exposed?

  • Further $10 discount if buying 4 pieces , comes to $4.46 each

    • Tried but not getting any further discount.

      • really? worked for me

        • Did you bought gift card recently may be it’s $10 promo on your account.

          • @V001: no I haven’t. There was option to redeem $10 discount on the product page, if buying 4 quantity, I don’t see it anymore, so may be they have removed it now

Guys dumb question, I'm new to all this airtag stuff (never used it before) - so is it like you put this airtag on something, and can track it via gps? what's the range of it?

Could I put it in my check-in luggage at the airport and track where it is at the baggage carousel at my destination airport?

    • +1

Its tracked using nearby iPhones. The location is very precise but requires a nearby iPhone otherwise it will appear at the last known location

  • I had 3d printed some AirTag holders but I was always worried about actual strength even though I did them in petg . These look cheap enough and reliable I might just replace all 4 with these. Cheers op

  • +4

didn't need it, so obviously i bought 1. its the ozbargain way.

    • Just 1? Amateur…

      • i got the grey, i didn't want the white, or else i would have 2.

    Never lose a girlfriend again

    • Land a stalking charge midway through the process

    • +2

Might be more useful for people with multiple girlfriends.
Tracking will assist to prevent 2 AirTags to come nearby at the same time.

  • Ooh think it’s oos

  • Is there an Android equivalent?
