Unlimited Data eSIM for 2 Months in China

Just wondering if anyone has recommendations for an unlimited data esim for 2 months in China that allows hotspotting and bypasses the Great Firewall of China?

My wife had previously used TravelKon's 30 day unlimited China esim which was good. That's ~$100 during sales so $200 overall cost.

Holafly does 2 months unlimited data for ~$150 but I've read that they don't allow hotspotting (would love to get verification of this).

Would anyone know a better value option exists?

VPN + local sim card not an option as wife won't have time to get a local sim when she touches down and will need data from the go.

Not unlimited, but 45GB is quite a large amount. Use the SPRING25 code too.

And if in data doubt, just buy 2 eSIMs, which after discount is $134. 90GB is surely enough unless you plan to facetime for 2 hours every day?

45Gb isn't going to be enough.

Wife and her parents will be alternating between their home and up to 2 weeks stay at the capital city of their province for hospital treatment each month.

The data connection will be for both getting things done and also entertainment (i.e. streaming shows or movies to pass the time).

Last time my wife went to China for the same thing, she burnt through the 15Gb travel esim I initially got her in 4 days, and used at least 50Gb of the unlimited esim I got her on day 4 of her month there.

You can see why I've specified unlimited.

I used the travelkon one for 30 days and really enjoyed using that. very easy to use.

I know there are some unlimited ones but theyre like $200 from what ive been told and thats for a month. Also check if they have higher speeds because i was on 5g with travelkon

    • I can vouch for the 30 day unlimited data TravelKon esim for China. It's 5G and only cost us $100 for 30 days. But it may be an issue for this upcoming trip.

If TravelKon did a 60 day option for ~$170/mth, that would be perfect… I just don't know where the Mrs will be on the day the second one needs to be added, and if she'll have wifi to use to activate the esim.

If you are in China that long, have you considered getting a local sim and just use a VPN? Local prepaid sim plans are more generous with data and you get a phone number. The downsides are that you need a VPN and have to spend some time in a mobile shop to get your ID verified.

Mother in law has cancer. Wife will be basically be going either straight to her parents' home, the hospital, or the hostel across from the hospital her parents stay at when her mum gets her chemo treatment.

She's gone through this earlier this year already and she and her dad were too tired on most days so spending a few hours at the mobile shop and getting ID verified is off the agenda.

Just for some perspective, patients in China per nurse is much higher than here in Australia. For chemo treatment, the nurse basically gave my wife a crash course on how to change the bags of medication around as each one emptied. Wife is there to get a job done: ensure her mum's nutritional needs during chemo is met, and to take a load off her dad too.

Cancer is terrible for anyone, not just the person getting the cancer, but the people around them as well. Sorry to hear that.

My initial comment was because coincidentally I am doing research for my own trip to China. I have heard from youtubers/vloggers that sometimes it is handy to have a local number to make a phone booking and/or if the driver of the Didi you ordered can't find where you are, they can call. Anyway, if my suggestion wasn't helpful, please ignore it completely. :)

          Thanks mate.

If my response came off a bit blunt, I aplogise too… am replying during work and was trying to be to the point and quick with the reply.

Agree that a local number is needed for a lot of things. That was the main reason Dad got a local number. He and my mum are abroad every second month and plan to go back to China many more times now that there's the 14 day visa free travel.

But in my wife's case, her parents have got local numbers so she'll be able to use their phones when a number is required.

It's mainly the data side of things and access to Google services that I will need to solve for her.

Some days I wish that she had hobbies that wasn't so data intensive but it is what it is and she and her parents need to destress. If that means using up a lot of data then so be it.

          • @Mugsy: I get it completely. That's what you do when you love someone. :)

    limited one-
klook does 30 day with 20gb for $25.89

    or this unlimited one

klook 30 days unlimited (first 30gb highspeed) for $40.55

    • The 90 day one with 60Gb at high speed is decent at $73.29… though the shaping after 60Gb to 128kbps worries me. If her last trip was any indication, she'll hit that after one month.

Maybe do a bit of searching for reviews on this - https://esim.holafly.com/esim-china/
Haven't tried it but did see a couple comments in my own search

    • Yeah, I've watched the review Project Untethered did on Holafly. At the time, he said Holafly didn't allow data sharing in most countries.

I see on their website they've relaxed this to 500Mb of data sharing per day which unfortunately isn't going to be sufficient.

  • Thanks for the replies everyone.

I may have found the right product now. SimsDirect do an unlimited data esim that covers 10 countries in Asia (ironically the China/HK/Macau unlimited one is the same prices):

    https://simsdirect.com.au/collections/esim-china/products/ut…

It has a 60 day option for $179… and I can get a 10% off for first purchase for my wife too. Allows hotspotting with speeds throttled to 1Mbps which is more than suitable for hotspotting still.

Best part is that because it covers 10 countries, she can start using it at her stop over in Singapore… the wifi at Changi can be patchy as she's dropped out when having a wechat call with me on her previous trip earlier this year.

EDIT: Seems SimDirect did a 30% off on Black Friday last year. That will bring the esim down to $125-ish if it happens again.
