My 3G Phone on Optus Network No Longer Working

My 3G phone on Optus network is no longer getting any signal bars.

I thought they have extended the shutdown of 3G till October? Has anyone had a 3G phone not working since last week?

  • Oh really? What, like they shut down the 3G network or something?

You've had months and months and months to upgrade and prepare for this.

    • +2

I know, but i wasn’t expecting it to switch off before end of September.

      • -3

So you were planning on using it until the last minute? Why?

What’s the point in berating someone, it’s already happened.
Op’s already being inconvenienced for their mismanagement.

        I don't understand the berating.
Optus have told consumers 3G shutdown is not until end October. It's entirely reasonable to expect connection until that date.

The actual reason for disconnection though is that Optus have enacted the E000 legislation. It's not just 3G phones disconnected, but also 4G phones (with working VoLTE on Optus) that have been disconnected as Optus have deemed them non-compliant to E000 requirements that all devices be able to connect to ALL networks VoLTE services (and therefore be able to call E000 across all networks).

        • Thanks. I read the headline like you said. 👍

        • "It's not just 3G phones disconnected, but also 4G phones (with working VoLTE on Optus) that have been disconnected as Optus have deemed them non-compliant to E000 requirements that all devices be able to connect to ALL networks VoLTE services (and therefore be able to call E000 across all networks)."

          Huh?

Are you saying they have disconnected 4G phones as well? Now I'm confused too.

          • +2

@EightImmortals: even 5G phones.. if they can't connect to Australian VoLTE as it's necessary to dial 000 after 3G is turned off

            • @Thrawn: Sounds way too complicated for me. :)

I checked my phone by sending an SMS to the checker and apparently I'm all god. Fingers crossed.

          • @EightImmortals: Yes, according to comments on Whirlpool threads.
Not all 4G handsets are E000 compliant, so they must legally be disconnected.

            • @ESEMCE: Thanks, mine is still working so I guess it's OK…for now. :)

              • +1

@EightImmortals: If you haven't already been informed of an issue by (multiple) texts and pre-recordings that run before every outgoing call, then you're probably fine.

                • @ESEMCE: My Poco X3 Pro only received the 1 warning text message from Optus back in June. Nothing at all since.

                  • +1

@chugsta: Could be that Poco X3 is one of those devices that was added to the list of compliant devices.

Wait until you find out we're up to 5G now!!!

    You can't stop progress.

Can they do an OS upgrade on their Nokia 3110?

    • OP doesn't want the 5G… that's how Bill Gates activates the covid vaccine nanobots to get us all voting for Kamala.

You lot are incredible, such bitter people.

        • Relax bro, it's just a joke.

    • We certainly cant get 5g in most of regional victoria and 10 kilometres up the road from my place there is zero phone service for Telstra no hope with all the other phone companies.

      • Most/all of Telstra's 850MHz 3G spectrum is being converted across to 5G, so you definitely should/will have 5G in regional Victoria wherever 3G coverage has previously existed as soon as they toggle the network across.

  • +2

You know why your service doesn’t work anymore,

For more clarity just contact Optus directly, if you don’t have the MyOptus app, message them using your internet browser. https://www.optus.com.au/my-account#engagechat

Time to upgrade op, good luck.

    • Thanks mate!

wait for 6G till you get a new phone

Aagh the old Optus Interruptous syndrome.
Download the G Spot App. It's easy to find.

If you recently inserted a sim onto a 3g phone, optus is disabling service to those phones.

The cut-off date was 10th september. Prior to this, if you'd kept using the sim card in your phone, it would've been fine. But if you inserted a sim card post the 10th, then the phone will no longer work.

The october timeline is if you have kept using the sim on the 3g phone since pre 10th september.

Thank you too for the explanation. Appreciate that as the reason. Love this community for the breadth of knowledge and kindness in helping.

  • Maybe you forgot to pay the bill and they cut your service off.

@OhNoUShiz What phone are you using?

  • +2

Imagine you were the last 3G user. What would life be like in 1 week, 1 month, 1 year after the apocalypse?

  • yeah some of the services had offer discounts on phone to upgrtade peeps to a4g. think they provided like $300 vouchers from amaysim or something like that

  • Jesus. I had a phone that was 8 years old and even I sprung for a new one.

  • Wish they'd just shut it down already rather than extend it.. My phone is using 4G calling but still getting non stop txts, emails, and have to hang up twice now to stop the stupid warning message to avoid having to wait for it to finish if I want to make a call… 3rd times the charm.

I've even gone in to the menu *#*#4636#*#* and forced network to be LTE only just in case it was dropping back to 3G at times but the warning messages still come every day.

    • If you're getting messages, your device will also be disconnected.
Time to start planning for a replacement.

I'm using a Poco X3 Pro with a custom ROM. Was just reading your comments about E000 above. I figured if it works with VoLTE it should be good to go, but seems there is another variable.

I don't know if E000 is the reason it's on the list, or because of VoLTE support (some people had to force the setting). I can't find any specific info about that so I guess the only way I can test is to pull my SIMs and see if it connects on 4G but I don't want to be calling 000.

Not too happy if my otherwise perfectly capable device is gonna be rendered a brick because of that :/

        • Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
I've also replaced a perfectly functioning device so I'm at least somewhat just as annoyed but the situation.
Mine (Mi 9T also running a Custom ROM) was at least 5 years old anyway, which helped to lessen the pain.

Unfortunately it seems that if your device is on the list, it's bound for disconnection.
By all means, see how things go, but just be prepared…

          • +1

@ESEMCE: Why did you replace it? My Mi 9T is currently working fine on the Vodafone network which has already got rid of 3G. It has all the bands so I'm assuming will work on Optus and Telstra as well.

            • +1

@WatchNerd: It works on Optus, but not Telstra (unless you're still on Android 10).
It's not just about the band support.

Optus think it is non compliant.
I got sick of the warnings that my phone wouldn't work.
Turns out that might have been a good decision based on Optus disabling service to devices not E000 compliant.

            • @WatchNerd: Have you tried if it gets 4G VoLTE with Boost (Telstra) as well?

              • @djoz: Yes I was using Belong Mobile for a long time & VoLTE was on. Also Boost.

My Xiaomi Mi 9T is on Android 10. Was thinking about looking into custom ROMS but maybe not a good idea.

                • +1

                  @WatchNerd: You're all good then.
My Xiaomi phone doesnt support VoLTE on Telstra and its MVNOs, but works all fine with VoLTE on Optus and Vodafone MVNOs.

Hence, I am worried that it might be blocked by the Telco(s). I have been receiving the warning texts all along this while, although I am currently using a service with 4G VoLTE on my nyumber.

                  • @djoz: I wouldn't be so confident…
The carriers are identifying phones by model, not by software version.

The Mi 9T was compatible on Telstra's VoLTE for Android 10, but the OTA software update to Android 11 broke that compatibility and it was never fixed. The assumption will be that all Mi 9T are on Android 11 and are therefore incompatible.
I was getting notifications from Optus that my Mi 9T (running custom ROM PixelOS, Android 14) handset was not compatible despite it happily making VoLTE calls.

There's also the question of whether the Mi 9T calls 000 only over 3G or if it's happy to call over VoLTE. The ability to call over VoLTE for a normal call is not a conclusive test.

                    • @ESEMCE: I got exhausted reading this lengthy article. But, so very well explained!
Australia’s 3G Shutdown - Telcos to Block Working 4G/5G Phones!

                      • @djoz: Yeah, that article largely matches my understanding and my opinions.

I'm not necessarily against shutting down 3G, BUT the shutdown needs to impact as few devices as possible.
In my opinion, there has not been enough government input to force the carriers to open up their networks to make them as widely compatible as possible.

  • What a shitshow. Optus have blocked my grey import Xperia. I'm assuming because they can't confirm triple zero status compatibility with their standards.

Complete rort not being properly overseen by the regulators

    • Which Xperia model did they block?
