The first SC2 campaign (Wings of Liberty) is already completely free, no subscriptions required.
This Game Pass (if it's the same as the battle.net 'Campaign Collection') release will get you access to the Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void and Nova Covert Ops campaigns too and a few more Co-op commanders.

    • The first SC2 campaign (Wings of Liberty) is already completely free, no subscriptions required.

Which makes it more weird that they've taken a year to bring it over to Game Pass.

Surprised they aren't adding Warcraft III: Reforged at the same time (though you are better off playing the fan made version in SC2 arcade).

    • do we even need battlenet anymore at this point lol

      • -1

I mean the real question was it ever needed?
Its games manager for like a maximum of what 8 games? Im suprised it wasnt killed off years ago tbh

        • +1

Well if you played Blizzard games before that, it was an individual client for each game. So yes, we did need it. And now it will probably go to the dogs. The Xbox client is absolute trash compared to the current battle.net version.

          • @Budju: Why is Xbox client so terrible?

I had so many bugs and stuck installations that were uninstalled but never disappeared… Games that were stuck in the wrong language and wouldn't change back. Games that never finished installing ever. Other stuff that never worked as intended. It used to have arcane installation locations with DRM that prevented mods. idk if that was fixed or not. Xbox launcher was the worst POS launcher I've ever used. Worst than Uplay, Origin, Bethesda Launcher, Epic, Battle.net, Rockstar whatever, etc, combined. I would never use that hunk of trash ever again.

    • How do you get it free via battle.net? The link seems to show 59.99 or 89.99? Is there a trick?

      • +1

You can just install it directly from your games list inside the Battle.net desktop app. Go into the game and the Wings of Liberty campaign will be available.

        • you have to pay for the rest of the campaigns though. I finished that without realising and got PO till someone pointed out that they advertised only the first part was free. Was okay afterwards but heh sucked cos i had to wait till next payday to get the rest of the game.

Nice , was just thinking about buying sc1 remastered to relive the glory days

One time me and my friend were playing online, on the same PC, against a Korean guy as Zerg. We asked him to wait because we had to eat lunch and he said okay, when we came back he had surrounded our starter base with big Zerg things waiting to kill us.

      • +2

        No rush kekeke

      • +1

Technically he did wait, you didn't specify enough conditions on the "wait" instruction.

      • korean guy

guy jokingly having a korean gamer tag: will you listen, im not the messiah

his opponents: he is the messiah!

Wish they made this for console

    • +4

      RTS on consoles don't work.

      • +2

I been playing AoE2 on console and it’s been great. Obviously not competitive but still really fun. Also Starcraft was on nintendo 64.

        • +1

AoE and StarCraft have different pace in the game though. In StarCraft, there’s ’micro movement’ to maximise your attacks and avoid enemy attacks, it can be an intensely precise game 😆

          • @YeboMate: AoE2 is the same in the high level comp matches

            • @enwar: Ah I didn’t realise. My bad!

            • @enwar: Watched a few vids and I still think SC on console will be a challenge. The general pace of the games are very different, even without at the highest level of the game StarCraft is a much faster paced game which I struggle to see how playable it will be to the general console gamer.

whats ur APM? 2 per minute?

      • It sure did work back when CnC came out!

    • +5

      They did - StarCraft 64

      • +1

It was actually not as terrible to play as you'd expect (still not great though). Ended up selling my cart for $$$ because I couldn't justify keeping it with it being so valuable.

    • For those who actually know how to play the game proficiently it's not really feasible

    Hell, it's about time.

      best trailer line ever

Ohh I remember the StarCraft 1: Brood Wars days… used to carry my bloody chunky ass PC and a CRT monitor to a mates place and we’d LAN all weekend on this.

When you arrive there’s always the LAN ritual: here’s anti-virus software > scan your PC before you connect to the network > spend next 2-3 hours scanning and watching others play > connect up to LAN > pick some poor bastard on the network and start copying the games from them > watch poor bastard lag in game while you wait for your game to finish copying > finish copying > ready to join the chaos!

  • There's also mass recall freely available to play

  • O how they ruined the story where Kerrigan just becomes a super saiyan thus making an army useless

  • will they have any achievements?

  • +1

Alright alright alright welcome back to another episode of the Florencio Files…

  • Starcraft 2 campaigns are a masterpiece! i still replay them, so god damn fun. Even the cinematics were so brilliant! I hope stormgate reaches a high level too

    • +1

I like SC2, don't get me wrong, but I frigging love SC1 more, especially BW. There is something missing in SC2 that I cannot put my finger on.

      • +1

Definitely. Like they stepped up the mission creativity in SC2 but it just never feels high-stakes? I dunno, SC1 feels a bit more "hopeless" like you really are fighting for survival against your adversaries and increasing number of challenges they throw your way. The plot feels more real and every character has their own motives which actually kinda shine through despite the basic mission briefings / VOs. And they are often that way to a fault, Raynor with his fierce loyalty, Mengsk's hatred for the confederacy and Kerrigan doing.. Kerrigan things.

You lose a lot of that "genuine" feeling in SC2, guessing the writers were just not really up to scratch.

  • This franchise hands down is one of the best games series to ever be released

SC2 is still extremely popular in the E-Sports arena 14 years later….. only a very small amount of multiplayer games can boast those credentials… counter strike is the only other one that could compete, but its long past its glory days of 1.6…….its more like COD lite now

    • I still cant get over the fact go and pay money for sprays and skins and stuff in these games,
like did this newer generation never Mod games??? wasn't modding 1.6 and source, or spraying 'distracting' .png files to bait people for a clean shot lool.

      • Custom spray tags in 1.6 were great distractions

Now everything is pay pay pay /smh

    My life for Aiur!

  • This game is pure stress, love it, cant sip water or take a break.

  • This is huge

  • Currently playing Stormgate, its OK, not as responsive as SC2 but its Early Access so should get better.

  • For people who can't read between the lines, they will be using this to determine how popular this franchise still is, and how viable it qould be creat more starcraft games

    • Microsoft said they will look into reviving older franchises. They did it before with Age of empires so I’m definitely holding my breath

      • Age of empires 2 remastered or HD or w.e it's called is still the masterpiece it was when released in 1999

Wish we had more games like that being released now for us 90s kids

  • Why does it need to be remastered? Just to get digital download access?

    • SC1 non-remastered was already free2play.

  • Somethings ….are just worth fighting for!
